EDD CA: No payment after 1 month, 1099 income reported. What's causing the delay?
I applied for unemployment almost a month ago and still haven't gotten my first payment or any letter explaining the delay. I'm worried there might be an issue with my claim. Has anyone else experienced this? I reported some 1099 income from a job that wasn't listed on the unemployment website. Could that be causing problems? What should I do next?

PSA: If anyone's having trouble with their claim, remember to check if you qualify for any other assistance programs while you wait. Food banks, rental assistance, etc. Don't let pride get in the way of taking care of yourself!

Have you tried calling them? Sometimes there's a hold on your account that they need to manually remove. It's a pain, but it might be worth a shot.

I've tried calling but can never get through. It's so frustrating!

Calling is a joke. I spent 3 days trying to get through and when I finally did, they put me on hold for 2 hours then hung up on me. 🤬

Pro tip: call right when they open. Set an alarm and start dialing at 7:59am. It's still a pain, but your chances are better.

I agree with the pro tip! Also, sometimes using a landline can get you through faster than a mobile phone.

Based on your situation, it's possible that your 1099 income is complicating your unemployment claim processing. Typically, unemployment systems are designed to primarily process W-2 income efficiently, so any self-employment income like 1099 can require additional verification, which can slow things down. It is crucial to periodically check the status of your claim online to see if any documents need to be uploaded. You might also consider reaching out to them through alternative means, such as email or visiting in person if phone lines are persistently busy. While Claimyr offers a solution with their calling tool, keep in mind there is a cost associated, and not everyone might find it acceptable or affordable. It's also important to seek out any local assistance programs while waiting for your benefits to minimize financial stress. If the delays continue, involving a state representative or legal assistance might be a next step. Overall, stay persistent, continue certifying weekly, and ensure all your documents are in order. Good luck!

Has anyone tried faxing their documents? I know it sounds ancient, but I heard from a friend that sometimes it gets processed faster that way.

I haven't tried that! Do you know if there's a specific fax number for claims issues?

I've heard some offices do process faxes faster, but it's worth confirming the number and getting a sent receipt as proof.

Hey OP, hang in there. I was in the same boat a few months ago. It took about 6 weeks, but I finally got my first payment. The system is just super backed up rn.

Online chat can be a good option if it's available, but it's often understaffed too.

Real talk: has anyone considered legal action? Like a class action lawsuit or something? This level of delay seems illegal.

This could be an option, but litigation can be lengthy. It might be worth exploring once all other avenues have been exhausted.

A peaceful protest isn't a bad idea to bring attention to the issues, but we need to be sure to go through the correct legal channels.

Here's what you need to do: Keep certifying for benefits every week, even if you haven't received payment yet. Try to contact them through every method possible - phone, email, and their online portal if they have one. Check your spam folder regularly. Sometimes important notices end up there. If you have a local unemployment office, try going in person. Sometimes face-to-face is more effective. Consider reaching out to your local state representative. They often have contacts in the unemployment office and can help push things along. Document everything. Keep a log of all your attempts to contact them, certifications, and any correspondence you receive. The 1099 income could be complicating things, but it shouldn't completely halt your claim. They might just need to verify the information. Hang in there, and keep pushing. The system is overwhelmed right now, but persistence usually pays off.

The 1099 income could definitely be causing issues. They might need to verify that income or adjust your benefit amount. You should definitely try to talk to someone about it.

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. (https://claimyr.com

Claimyr is a legit service, but it's unfortunate that such a service even needs to exist. Ideally, the state should be accessible without extra costs.
