DMV: Driver's license already assigned to another account - Help!
Hey everyone, I'm having an issue with my drivers license. I tried to log into my account but it says my license is already assigned to another account. I'm not sure what to do. Has anyone else run into this problem? Any advice on how to fix it?

Ugh, I had the same issue last month. It's so frustrating! Have you tried contacting the DMV directly? They might be able to help you sort it out.

•Thanks for the suggestion. I've been trying to get through to them but the wait times are insane. 😫 Did you have any luck getting it resolved?

•Yeah, it took a while but I finally got it sorted. Just keep trying, and maybe try calling first thing in the morning when they open. Good luck!

This happened to me too! Turns out my ex-wife had used my license number by mistake when renewing her registration. It was a whole mess to untangle. Definitely call the DMV and explain the situation.

Have you checked if theres an online form you can fill out for this kind of issue? Sometimes its faster than calling

Oof, sounds like a headache. 🤕 I wonder if this is related to that data breach last year? Maybe someone's using your info...

Hey guys, I found a method to get someone on the phone at the DMV. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

•20 bucks? Idk man, seems kinda steep just to make a phone call.

•I get the skepticism, but it seriously saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imho.

Here's what you need to do: 1. Gather all your identification documents (birth certificate, social security card, etc.) 2. Take screenshots of the error message you're getting 3. Call the DMV's dedicated line for account issues: 1-800-XXX-XXXX 4. Be prepared to verify your identity multiple times 5. Ask them to check for any duplicate accounts or misassigned license numbers 6. If they can't resolve it over the phone, request an in-person appointment 7. Bring all your documents to the appointment 8. Ask them to merge or delete any duplicate accounts 9. Get written confirmation of the resolution It's a pain, but this process should get you sorted out. Good luck!

I went through this exact same nightmare a few months ago! Turns out someone at the DMV had accidentally linked my license to their spouse's account during a renewal. The key is being persistent - don't let them transfer you around endlessly. Ask to speak to a supervisor immediately and emphasize that this is preventing you from accessing essential services. Also, if you have any old DMV receipts or renewal notices, bring those as proof of your legitimate account history. It took 3 calls but they finally got it straightened out. Hang in there!

•@Ana Erdoğan This is super helpful! I m'definitely going to ask for a supervisor right away instead of getting bounced around. The tip about bringing old receipts is smart too - I think I have some renewal paperwork somewhere. Really appreciate you sharing your experience!

I actually work at a DMV field office and see this issue pretty regularly. A few things to check before calling: 1) Make sure you're entering your DL number exactly as it appears on your physical license (common mistake is mixing up letters/numbers), 2) Try using your old DL number if you recently renewed, and 3) Clear your browser cache completely. If none of that works, calling is your best bet but try the automated system first - sometimes it can detect and fix simple account conflicts without needing to speak to anyone. The phone lines are definitely brutal but typically lightest around 2-3pm on weekdays.

•This is incredibly helpful coming from someone who actually works at the DMV! I never would have thought to try my old license number - that's a great tip. The timing suggestion for calling is gold too. Thanks for sharing the insider knowledge! 🙌

Just wanted to add another option that worked for me - if you have a AAA membership, they can sometimes help with DMV account issues at their offices. I had a similar problem where my license was tied to an old account I couldn't access, and the AAA rep was able to call the DMV directly and get it resolved in about 30 minutes. Way faster than trying to get through on the phone yourself! Not sure if they can help with this specific issue, but might be worth a shot if you're a member.

•Oh wow, I had no idea AAA could help with DMV stuff like this! I've been a member for years but never thought to ask them about account issues. That's such a smart workaround - 30 minutes vs potentially hours on hold with the DMV sounds amazing. Definitely going to try this first before dealing with the phone nightmare. Thanks for the tip! 🚗

Just a heads up - I had this exact same issue and it turned out my license number was somehow duplicated in their system during a recent address change. The DMV rep told me this has been happening more frequently lately due to system updates they've been doing. When you call, specifically mention that you suspect a "duplicate license number assignment" - apparently using that exact phrase gets you transferred to a specialized team that deals with these technical glitches. Also, if you've moved or updated any info with the DMV in the past 6 months, definitely mention that too as it seems to be a common trigger for this bug. Hope this helps narrow down what might have caused it for you!
