EDD PFL Registration Error E313 - Long Name Issue?

Hey everyone, I'm having trouble filing a claim for Paid Family Leave. When I try to register, I keep getting an E313 error. I think it might be because my first name is pretty long. Has anyone else run into this? Any ideas on how to fix it?

Ugh, the EDD system is such a nightmare! 🤦‍♂️ I had a similar issue with my last name being too long. Have you tried calling them directly? It's a pain, but sometimes that's the only way to get things sorted.

I've been trying to call for days but can never get through. It's so frustrating!

Pro tip: call right when they open. Set an alarm and start dialing at 7:59 AM. It's still a pain, but your chances are way better.

Good advice! Also, try calling on Wednesdays. For some reason, I've had better luck midweek.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

I was skeptical too, but I tried it and it actually worked. Saved me hours of frustration.

$20 seems steep just to make a phone call. The system is so broken if we have to pay extra just to talk to someone 🙄

I get it, but for me, it was worth it to finally get my issue resolved. Time is money, ya know?

Have you tried using your initials instead of your full first name? Sometimes that works as a workaround for the character limit.

The E313 error is usually related to identity verification. Here's what you can try: 1. Double-check all your personal info (SSN, DOB, etc.) for typos 2. Try a different browser or clear your cache 3. If you have a hyphenated name, try removing the hyphen 4. Make sure your name matches exactly what's on your Social Security card 5. If all else fails, you might need to file by mail or fax Hope this helps!

Wow, thanks for the detailed response! I'll give these a try.

This is great advice. I had to file by fax last year and it actually went pretty smoothly.

I swear, dealing with EDD is like trying to sail a boat with no rudder. Anyone else feel like they're just drifting aimlessly in a sea of bureaucracy?

More like trying to sail the Titanic after it hit the iceberg 💀

LMAO 😂 you win

Hey OP, any luck with resolving this? I'm in the same boat and could use some hope 😅

Still working on it, but I'm gonna try some of the suggestions here. I'll update if I figure it out!

PSA: EDD just updated their system last week. Might be causing some glitches. If you can wait a few days before trying again, it might resolve itself.

have u tried turning it off and on again? 🙃

If only it were that easy 😭

I had the exact same E313 error! Turns out it was because my name has special characters (like yours with the ğ). What worked for me was typing my name exactly as it appears on my Social Security card, but replacing any special characters with regular letters. So "Erdoğan" would become "Erdogan". The system apparently can't handle non-ASCII characters properly. Give that a try and let us know if it works!

Oh wow, this is super helpful! I never thought about the special characters being an issue. That makes total sense - my name has the ğ character too. I'm definitely going to try replacing it with a regular "g" when I fill out the form again. Thanks so much for sharing what worked for you! 🙏

This is brilliant! I've been struggling with this exact same issue and never realized the special character could be the problem. My last name also has some non-standard characters. I'm going to try this approach tomorrow and see if it finally gets me past that stupid E313 error. Really appreciate you sharing the solution that worked for you!

OMG thank you so much @CosmicCaptain! This is exactly the kind of insight I needed. I had no idea that special characters could cause the E313 error. My name definitely has the ğ character and I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure out what's wrong. I'm going to try replacing it with a regular "g" right now. Fingers crossed this finally works! Will report back with results 🤞

This is such a lifesaver! I've been banging my head against the wall for weeks with this E313 error. My name also has special characters (lots of accents) and I never even considered that could be the issue. The EDD system is so outdated - it's ridiculous that it can't handle basic international characters in 2025. But hey, if converting to ASCII characters works, I'm all for it! Going to try this right now. Thanks for figuring this out and sharing it with everyone! 🙌

This is amazing advice! I can't believe I've been struggling with this E313 error for so long and it was probably just the special character in my name causing the issue. I'm going to try replacing the ğ with a regular "g" like you suggested. It's honestly ridiculous that the EDD system can't handle basic international characters, but at least now I have a workaround. Thank you so much for sharing what worked for you - you might have just saved me weeks of frustration! 🙏

This is such a helpful thread! I'm dealing with a similar issue but mine might be related to having a really long middle name too. Has anyone had success shortening their middle name or just using the initial? I'm wondering if the character limit applies to the whole name field combined or just individual parts. Also, @CosmicCaptain your tip about special characters is gold - I never would have thought of that! Going to try the ASCII-friendly version of my name and see if that does the trick.

Hey @Freya Larsen! I had a similar issue with my middle name being super long. What worked for me was just using the middle initial instead of the full name. The EDD system seems to have a pretty strict character limit for the entire name field, not just individual parts. So if your first + middle + last name is too long combined, try shortening the middle to just the initial. Also definitely try the special character fix that @CosmicCaptain mentioned - that seems to be helping a lot of people! Good luck! 🍀

@Freya Larsen I just went through this same nightmare! For me it was definitely the combined character count that was the issue. I have a long first name, long middle name, and hyphenated last name - way over the limit. What finally worked was using my first initial + middle initial + full last name. The system accepted that format. Also seconding what @CosmicCaptain said about special characters - that was a game changer for my friend who has accents in her name. The EDD system is stuck in like 1995 when it comes to handling names, but at least there are workarounds! Hope this helps! 💪

I've been lurking here for a while but finally had to create an account because this thread is SO helpful! I'm a new mom trying to file for PFL and have been stuck on this exact E313 error for over a week. My name is Zoë (with the umlaut) and reading through all these comments made me realize that might be the culprit. I'm going to try entering it as just "Zoe" without the special character and see if that fixes it. It's honestly insane that in 2025 we still have to deal with government systems that can't handle basic international characters, but I'm just grateful you all figured out the workarounds! Will definitely report back if this works - fingers crossed! 🤞
