EDD SDI website truncating name, causing verification failure. Help!

Hey everyone, I'm having a frustrating issue with the EDD SDI website. When I try to register as a claimant for e-filing disability and parental leave, my first name gets cut off due to some character limit. This is causing a verification failure and I can't complete the process. Has anyone else run into this problem? Any ideas on how to fix it?

I found a way to solve EDD SDI name truncation issue, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h91sI0ImXrU

Ugh, that sucks! I had a similar issue last year. Have you tried calling them directly? It's a pain, but sometimes talking to a real person is the only way to get these things fixed.

Yeah, I've been trying to call but the wait times are insane. I've been on hold for hours and still no luck 😫

Pro tip: call right when they open. I got through in like 15 minutes doing that!

Thanks for the tip! I'll give that a shot tomorrow morning 🙏

I found a way to get someone on the phone fast. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

I was skeptical too, but it actually worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration.

20 bucks tho? Thats kinda steep just to talk to someone 🤔

I get it, but for me, it was worth it. Time is money, ya know? 🤷‍♂️

Have you tried using your initials instead of your full first name? That might get around the character limit issue.

This is a known issue with the EDD SDI system. Here's what you need to do: 1. First, try clearing your browser cache and cookies. Sometimes this resolves verification issues. 2. If that doesn't work, you'll need to contact EDD directly. Use their online contact form and specifically mention the name truncation issue. 3. In your message, include your full correct name, the truncated version showing on the site, and any claim numbers or personal identifiers (BUT NEVER YOUR FULL SSN). 4. Request that they manually update your name in their system. 5. While waiting for a response, try registering using just your first and last name, omitting any middle names. 6. If all else fails, you may need to file a paper claim. You can download the form from the EDD website. Remember, persistence is key when dealing with government systems. Don't give up!

Wow, thank you so much for this detailed response! I'll definitely try these steps. You're a lifesaver! 💯

This is why I love this community. Always coming through with the real solutions! 👏

lol welcome to the wonderful world of government websites 🤡 where nothing works and everything is a headache

ain't that the truth 😂 I swear these sites were designed by monkeys

Hey now, don't insult monkeys like that! 🐒

Have you tried reaching out to your local assembly member's office? They often have direct lines to EDD and can help push things through faster.

I hadn't even thought of that! Great idea, I'll look up my assembly member now. Thanks!

Ive been dealing with edd for months now. its a nightmare. good luck op, your gonna need it 😫

This might sound crazy, but have you tried using a different browser? Sometimes these government sites are optimized for older versions of Internet Explorer or something equally ridiculous.

omg yes! I had to use Microsoft Edge to get my unemployment stuff to work last year. It's like they're stuck in 2005 or something

Just a heads up, I heard they're doing system maintenance this weekend. Might be worth waiting until Monday to try again, could fix your issue.

I ran into the exact same issue a few months ago! The name truncation problem is super frustrating. What worked for me was a combination of things: first, I tried using Chrome in incognito mode (cleared all the cache issues), and then I entered my name without any middle names or suffixes. If your first name is really long, you might also try using a common nickname version if you have one. Also, make sure you're not including any special characters or punctuation - the system seems to choke on those too. If none of that works, definitely go with the assembly member suggestion someone mentioned above. They actually got back to me within 2 days when I was stuck. Hope this helps!

This is super helpful! I never thought about trying incognito mode - that's actually a really good point about the cache. My first name is pretty long (think Eastern European) so the nickname idea might work too. I'll definitely try Chrome incognito first before going the assembly member route. Thanks for sharing what worked for you! 🙏

I had this exact same problem last month! The character limit thing is so annoying. What finally worked for me was going to my local EDD office in person with my ID and documents. I know it's a hassle, but the staff there were able to manually enter my full name correctly in their system and override the truncation issue. It took about 2 hours total (including wait time), but I walked out with everything properly set up. If you have a local office nearby, it might be worth the trip instead of fighting with the website. They can also verify your identity on the spot so you don't have to deal with the verification failure loop.

Going in person is probably the most reliable way to get this fixed! I've been struggling with their online system for weeks now and it's so frustrating when technology just doesn't work. Did you need to make an appointment first or could you just walk in? I'm worried about showing up and them telling me I need to schedule something online (which would be ironic given my current situation). Also, do you remember which documents they needed beyond just ID? I want to make sure I bring everything so I don't have to make multiple trips.

I've been dealing with this exact same issue for weeks! The EDD website is notorious for these character limit problems. One thing that worked for a friend of mine was using a mobile device instead of desktop - apparently the mobile version sometimes handles longer names better. Also, if you have any hyphens or apostrophes in your name, try removing those temporarily just for the registration process. The system seems to count those as extra characters. Another workaround is to see if you can register using your legal name as it appears on your most recent tax return - sometimes that version is shorter or formatted differently. Really hoping they fix this bug soon because it's affecting so many people with longer names!

This is really helpful! I never thought about trying the mobile version - that's such a simple thing to test but makes total sense that they might handle character limits differently. My name does have a hyphen in it, so I'll definitely try removing that first. The tax return suggestion is brilliant too since that's probably how they have me in their system anyway. It's crazy that we have to jump through all these hoops just because their programmers didn't account for diverse name lengths. Thanks for sharing what worked for your friend! 🤞

I've been lurking in this community for a while but had to create an account to share my experience with this exact same issue! I'm a software developer and I've seen this type of bug before - it's usually because they set a database field limit that's way too small for names. What worked for me was actually contacting EDD through their accessibility complaint process (since name truncation can be considered a digital accessibility issue). I filled out their online form explaining that the character limit was preventing me from accessing services, and they had someone from their IT department contact me within 3 business days to manually fix my account. It's worth trying this route before spending money on calling services or taking time off work to visit in person. The form is buried on their website but if you search "EDD accessibility complaint" you should find it. Hope this helps someone avoid the runaround I went through initially!

Wow, this is such a smart approach! I never would have thought to frame it as an accessibility issue, but you're absolutely right - if their system can't handle normal name lengths, that's definitely a barrier to accessing services. As someone who's been banging my head against this wall for days now, the idea of getting actual IT support instead of just generic customer service is amazing. I'm definitely going to try the accessibility complaint route first before going through all the other workarounds people have suggested. Thanks for taking the time to create an account just to share this - you might have just saved a bunch of us a lot of time and frustration! 🙏

I had this same exact problem a couple months ago and it was driving me absolutely crazy! After trying everything people suggested here (different browsers, clearing cache, etc.), what finally worked for me was a combination approach. First, I tried the mobile version like someone mentioned - that actually did let me enter a few more characters. But the real breakthrough came when I realized that the verification was failing not just because of the truncation, but because the truncated name didn't match what was in their system from my previous tax filings. I ended up calling the EDD disability line early in the morning (around 8:02 AM right when they opened) and got through in about 20 minutes. The rep was actually super helpful and explained that they could create a "name alias" in their system that would allow both the full name and truncated version to work for verification. The whole call took maybe 15 minutes once I got through. Definitely frustrating that we have to deal with this in 2024, but at least there are workarounds! Good luck!
