EDD Call In Notice: Transitioning from Disability to PFL for spouse's cancer care - What to expect?

Hey everyone, I need some advice. I just got a Call In Notice letter from EDD. I was on disability for a surgery, but now I'm transitioning to Paid Family Leave to care for my spouse who has cancer. EDD says they need more info, but I'm not sure what exactly they want. Has anyone dealt with this before? What should I expect when I call them? I'm kinda freaking out here.

I found a way to solve transitioning disability to PFL issues, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDq5gsg2zwE

Unpopular opinion: EDD workers are doing their best with an outdated system and not enough staff. Be patient with them when you call.

Nice try, EDD employee 😂

Lol, I wish! At least then I'd know how the system works 😅

It's true that the infrastructure can limit efficiency. Patience and kindness can go a long way in stressful situations.

Anyone else feel like we need a complete overhaul of the EDD system? It's 2023 and we're still dealing with fax machines and hour-long hold times. SMH.

Preach! 🙌 Its like there stuck in the 90s or somthing

For real. My grandma could design a better system, and she still uses AOL.

Definitely overdue for modernization. It would save time and resources for both the public and the EDD workers.

y'all ever notice how the EDD website looks like it was designed in 1995? 💀 Maybe if they updated their tech, we wouldn't have so many problems.

LOL for real. It's giving GeoCities vibes 🤣

Hey now, don't insult 1995 like that. At least back then things actually worked 😂

A modern interface could drastically improve user experience and reduce errors. It's long overdue.

I went thru something similar last year. Here's what you need to do: 1. Gather all your docs: disability claim info, medical records, EDD letters 2. Write down your timeline: when disability ended, when PFL starts 3. Prepare a list of questions: what specific info they need, any forms to fill out 4. Be patient (easier said than done, I know) 5. Take notes during the call Good luck! The system is a mess, but hang in there.

Thanks for the detailed advice! Did they ask you for anything specific about the transition between disability and PFL? That's the part I'm most worried about.

0 coins

-

7M

Zoe Alexopoulos

Yeah, they wanted exact dates and proof of my last day on disability. Make sure you have a doctor's note or something showing when you were cleared to return to work. They're sticklers for that stuff.

This is great advice! I'd add: record the call if you can. CA is a two-party consent state, so ask the agent first. It's saved my butt before when they "lost" info I gave them.

Also, make sure you clearly explain the reason for the transition. A note from the doctor regarding the medical necessity for caregiving can be helpful.

idk if this helps, but I found their Twitter support to be surprisingly responsive. Might be worth a shot if you're still stuck.

Social media teams are often more agile. Good alternative to the traditional helpline!

8am PST. Set your alarm and be ready to dial!

Hot take: we should all show up at the EDD office and demand better service. Who's with me? ✊

Does anyone know if there's a support group for people dealing with EDD stress? Asking for a friend (jk it's me, I'm the friend) 😅

PSA: If you're having trouble with EDD, contact your local state representative's office. They can often help push things through faster.

0 coins

-

Carmen Flores

Wow, I never thought of that. How do I find my rep?

Just google "[your city] state representative". They usually have a constituent services team that deals with this stuff.

Update: I finally got through! For anyone else in the same boat, they wanted: 1. Exact end date of disability 2. Doctor's note clearing me to work 3. New medical certification for PFL 4. Proof of relationship for caregiving Thanks for all the advice, everyone! This community is awesome. 💪

To answer your question, transitioning from disability to Paid Family Leave (PFL) can sometimes require additional documentation. The Employment Development Department (EDD) primarily wants to ensure that there is no overlap between the two benefits and that all transitions are medically justified. When you contact them, be prepared to provide the exact end date of your disability leave, a doctor's note or certification that confirms the end of your disability period, any new medical certification required for PFL, and proof of your relationship to the person you're caring for as part of the PFL application. It might be helpful to ask for a specific checklist of the documents they require when you call, so you can follow up with anything you might have missed. While services like Claimyr can assist in reaching EDD agents more efficiently, remember that they are third-party services and come with a fee. It's always wise to evaluate if it's the right choice for you. Ultimately, keeping all your correspondence organized and documented will help ensure that you have all the necessary information at your fingertips if you need to reference it later.

Bruh, most of us are just trying to get what we're owed. The system games itself.

It's important to follow the rules, but the system should also be fair and accessible to everyone.

Have you tried faxing your info? Sometimes that's faster than calling. Just make sure to follow up cuz they might "lose" it. 🙄

It's sad, but true. Always confirm they received your fax, and document the time and date you sent it.

Am I the only one who thinks its weird that we have to jump through so many hoops just to get benefits we've already paid into? The whole system feels rigged against us.

I found a way to get through! There's this site called claimyr.com that has a calling tool. It dials the menu, waits on hold, and then connects you when a real person picks up. Costs $20 but it worked for me. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM

Ugh, EDD is such a pain to deal with. I've been there, and it's frustrating. Make sure you have ALL your paperwork ready when you call. And I mean everything - medical docs, claim numbers, dates, the works. They'll ask for stuff you didn't even know existed.

0 coins

-

CyberSamurai

Absolutely! If you miss any details, it could delay your benefits even further. Better to be over-prepared than caught off guard.

Protip: If you're having trouble getting through on the phone, try calling from a different number. Sometimes they block numbers that call too often.
