Late SDI certification near claim end date - will I still get paid?
I'm so stressed about my disability payments right now! My SDI claim ends on January 7, 2025 (which means benefits actually stop the Sunday before that date). I completely forgot to complete my quarterly certification that was due 2 weeks ago, and now I didn't receive my payment on Sunday like usual. I just submitted the certification yesterday when I realized what happened. My questions are: 1) Will I still get this payment even though I'm close to my end date? 2) If they do process this late certification, will my next payment date permanently change from Sunday to whatever day this payment comes through, or will it reset back to Sundays? I have bills due this week and I'm panicking a bit. Has anyone dealt with late certifications right before their claim expires?

Don't worry too much - you should still get paid! Late certifications typically process within 2-3 business days. The payment schedule usually goes back to normal (Sundays) for your next certification cycle. Just make sure you don't miss any more certifications between now and your end date, as EDD gets extra strict about processing speed in the final month of claims.

•Thank you so much for the quick response! Do you think I should call EDD to make sure they received my late certification? Or just wait the 2-3 days?

•Oh that's a relief to hear! Did you have to do anything special to get it processed or did it just happen automatically after you submitted the late certification?

The EDD system is DESIGNED to punish people who miss deadlines! I was in the hospital when my certification was due (ironic since I was on disability!) and they made me jump through ridiculous hoops to get my payment. Had to call 47 TIMES before getting through!!! Then they still took 6 days to process it. The whole system is broken beyond belief.

•Oh no, that sounds awful! Now I'm worried again... I really can't afford to wait 6 days for this payment.

If you want to make sure they received your certification and get this resolved quickly, I'd recommend calling EDD. However, as you probably know, getting through to an EDD representative can be nearly impossible these days. I used a service called Claimyr last month when I had a certification issue, and they got me connected to an EDD agent within 15 minutes instead of spending days trying to get through. You can check them out at claimyr.com - they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd The agent was able to verify that my certification was received and pushed it through for payment that same day. Might be worth it if you need this payment urgently.

•Thanks for the suggestion! I've been calling EDD all morning with no luck getting through. I'll check out that service - at this point I just need to talk to someone who can confirm they got my certification.

ur payment wont come on sunday if u certified late. itll come like 48 hrs after u certify. so if u did it yesterday maybe tomorrow or thursday? then it goes back to sundays if u certify on time after that

•Gotcha, that makes sense. So this is just a one-time schedule change and not permanent. Thanks!

I had disability for my pregnancy last year and missed a certification too! I was so busy with the baby I completely forgot lol. Anyway they still paid me but I think they only do this if you have a valid reason. Did you tell them why you forgot to certify?

•Actually, EDD SDI doesn't require an explanation for late certifications unless they're more than 30 days late. The quarterly certification form doesn't have a field for explaining why it's late. As long as it's submitted before the claim expires and within that 30-day window, it should process automatically without needing a reason. This is different from UI certifications which are much stricter about timeliness.

To directly answer your questions: 1) Yes, you will still get paid for a late certification as long as it's within your benefit period and you're still medically eligible. 2) Payment timing: This payment will arrive approximately 48-72 hours after your late certification was processed. Your next regular payment will revert to the normal Sunday schedule IF you certify on time. 3) Regarding your claim end date: Be aware that benefits don't automatically stop on January 7. The claim period ending means you can't submit NEW certifications after that date, but you can still receive payment for periods WITHIN your claim period, even if you certify for them slightly late. The EDD system has a 20-day grace period for late certifications near the end of claims, specifically to handle situations like yours. Just make sure your final certification is submitted no later than January 27, 2025 (20 days after your claim end date).

UPDATE: Just wanted to let everyone know that my payment came through this morning! It took about 2.5 days after submitting the late certification. So relieved right now. Thanks to everyone who helped calm me down and provided info! Now I'll make sure to set multiple reminders for my final certification next month.

So glad to hear your payment came through! This is really helpful for others who might be in similar situations. I'm actually approaching the end of my SDI claim in a few months and was worried about what would happen if I accidentally missed a certification. Your experience shows that EDD does process late certifications even near the claim end date. Thanks for taking the time to update everyone - it's always nice to see these stories have happy endings!

This is such a great thread! I'm bookmarking this for future reference. I've been on SDI for about 6 months now and I'm always paranoid about missing certifications. It's really reassuring to see that even when you mess up, the system still works (even if it takes a few extra days). The tip about the 20-day grace period is gold - I had no idea about that! Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences, especially Emma for the update. This kind of real-world info is so much more helpful than trying to decode the official EDD website.

•I'm so glad this thread exists too! As someone who just started receiving SDI benefits last month, I was terrified about potentially missing a certification deadline. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been incredibly reassuring. The fact that Emma got her payment in just 2.5 days after a late submission gives me so much peace of mind. And yes, that 20-day grace period info from Chloe is absolutely invaluable - definitely something they should make more obvious on the EDD website! Thanks to everyone for creating such a supportive and informative discussion.

This thread has been incredibly helpful! I'm new to SDI (just started my claim last week) and I'm already anxious about keeping track of certification deadlines. Emma, I'm so glad your payment came through - that must have been such a relief! The information about the 20-day grace period is something I definitely didn't know from reading the EDD materials. I'm going to set up multiple calendar reminders like others suggested. It's reassuring to know that even if something goes wrong, there are still options and the community here is so supportive. Thanks everyone for sharing your real experiences - it makes navigating this system feel less overwhelming!

•Welcome to the SDI world, Mason! It's totally normal to feel anxious about the deadlines when you're just starting out. One thing that really helped me was setting up reminders not just for the certification due dates, but also a few days before to give myself time to gather any info I might need. The community here is amazing - everyone's been through similar situations and is always willing to help. Don't hesitate to ask questions if you run into any issues along the way!

Just wanted to add my experience for anyone else who might stumble across this thread in the future! I missed a certification by about 10 days earlier this year when I was dealing with a family emergency. Like Emma, I was absolutely panicking about whether I'd still get paid. The payment did come through, but it took about 4 business days instead of the usual 2-3. What really helped me was logging into my EDD online account to check the status - it showed "pending" for a couple days, then switched to "paid" once it was processed. The key thing I learned is that as long as you're still within your benefit period and under that 30-day late window, they will process it. Setting phone reminders every quarter has been a lifesaver since then!

•Thanks for sharing your experience, Arjun! That's really helpful to know about checking the online account status - I wish I had thought to do that when I was waiting for my payment. The "pending" to "paid" status change is a great way to track what's happening behind the scenes. Your tip about setting phone reminders is spot on too. I ended up doing the same thing after my scare - now I have reminders set for 1 week before AND 2 days before each certification is due. It's such a relief knowing that even with emergencies or life getting in the way, there's still that safety net as long as you're within the timeframe. This thread has become such a valuable resource for anyone dealing with SDI certification issues!

This is such an incredibly helpful thread! As someone who's been dealing with SDI for about 3 months now, I've been living in constant fear of missing a certification deadline. Emma, I'm so relieved to hear your payment came through - that 2.5 day turnaround gives me hope that the system isn't completely broken. The information about the 20-day grace period from Chloe is absolutely crucial - why doesn't EDD make this clearer in their communications? I've been setting reminders too, but after reading everyone's experiences here, I think I need to add even more backup alerts. It's amazing how much more reassuring real community experiences are compared to trying to navigate the confusing EDD website alone. Thank you all for sharing your stories and creating such a supportive space for people going through similar situations!

•I completely agree with you, Harmony! This thread has been such a lifesaver for understanding how SDI really works in practice. When I first started my claim a few weeks ago, I was so overwhelmed by all the official documentation and fine print. Reading Emma's experience and everyone else's real-world stories makes it feel so much more manageable. The fact that multiple people have successfully gotten their payments even after missing deadlines is incredibly reassuring. I'm definitely going to follow everyone's advice about setting multiple reminders - better safe than sorry! It's frustrating that EDD doesn't communicate things like the 20-day grace period more clearly, but at least we have this community to fill in those gaps.

This whole thread has been incredibly reassuring to read! I'm currently about halfway through my SDI claim and have been absolutely terrified about potentially missing a certification deadline. Emma, your experience really shows that even when things go wrong, there's still hope - and that 2.5 day turnaround is much better than some of the horror stories I've heard about EDD delays. The tip about the 20-day grace period is something I'm definitely saving for future reference. I've already set up calendar reminders, but after reading everyone's experiences here, I think I'm going to add a few more just to be extra safe. It's so helpful to have a community where people share their real experiences instead of just trying to decipher the confusing official EDD documentation. Thanks to everyone for being so supportive and informative!

•I'm right there with you, Keisha! I just started my SDI claim about a month ago and have been checking my calendar obsessively to make sure I don't miss any deadlines. Reading Emma's story and everyone else's experiences has been such a relief - it's good to know that even if the worst happens and you miss a certification, it's not the end of the world. I think I'm going to follow everyone's advice and set up multiple reminders too. Maybe one a week before, one three days before, and one the day before just to be absolutely sure. This community is amazing for getting real answers instead of trying to navigate EDD's confusing website alone!

I'm so grateful I found this thread! I just started my SDI claim two weeks ago and I've been incredibly anxious about managing all the certification deadlines properly. Emma, reading about your experience and seeing that your payment came through in just 2.5 days after a late submission is such a huge relief. I was convinced that missing even one deadline would completely derail everything. The information about the 20-day grace period is absolutely invaluable - I had no idea that existed and it's definitely not clearly explained in any of the EDD materials I received. I'm definitely going to set up multiple calendar reminders like everyone has suggested. This community is amazing for providing real-world guidance that you just can't get from the official EDD resources. This thread has been absolutely incredible to read through! I'm currently in my second month of SDI and have been losing sleep worrying about certification deadlines. Emma, your story is such a perfect example of how things can work out even when we panic - that 2.5 day turnaround for a late certification is actually pretty impressive considering all the EDD horror stories out there! The 20-day grace period information is pure gold - seriously, why doesn't EDD put this kind of crucial info front and center instead of burying it somewhere in the fine print? I've already set up three different calendar reminders (one week before, three days before, and day of) but reading everyone's experiences here makes me feel so much more confident about managing this process. It's amazing how much more reassuring real community experiences are compared to trying to decode EDD's confusing official documentation. Thank you all for creating such a supportive and informative space!

•I'm so glad this thread has been helpful for you too, Aisha! It really is frustrating how EDD doesn't make these important details more accessible - I feel like so much unnecessary stress could be avoided if they just communicated better. Your three-reminder system sounds perfect - that's exactly the kind of safety net that gives peace of mind. When I first joined this community, I was also constantly worried about making some mistake that would mess up my benefits. But seeing everyone's real experiences, especially success stories like Emma's, really shows that the system is more forgiving than it initially seems. This thread has definitely become a go-to resource that I keep coming back to whenever I have questions about my own claim!

Emma, your experience is so reassuring - the fact that you got your payment in just 2.5 days after submitting late shows the system actually does work, even when we mess up! I had no idea about the 20-day grace period either - that's such crucial information that should be highlighted more prominently by EDD. Like everyone else here, I'm definitely going to set up multiple reminders now. It's incredible how this community provides the real-world guidance that you just can't get from EDD's official materials. Thank you all for sharing your experiences and creating such a supportive environment for those of us navigating this sometimes confusing system!

Just wanted to say how valuable this thread has been! I'm about 6 weeks into my first SDI claim and have been absolutely paranoid about missing certification deadlines. Emma, your story is such a relief - knowing that even a late certification near the claim end date still gets processed in just 2.5 days really eases my anxiety. The 20-day grace period information is incredibly helpful too - I wish EDD made these kinds of important details more visible instead of hiding them in the fine print. I've set up calendar reminders like others suggested, but I think I'm going to add even more backup alerts after reading everyone's experiences.
