EDD SDI payment delay after certification - how many hours until it hits BofA card?
Just certified for my disability benefits yesterday morning (around 9am) but still nothing showing on my claim status or payment history. Usually I see some kind of update by now! I'm checking my BofA card balance obsessively but nothing's posted yet. This is my third certification period so I thought I had the timing figured out, but now I'm stressing. For those who regularly get SDI payments - how long does it typically take between certifying and seeing money on your card? Does certifying on a Sunday vs weekday make any difference? I have bills automatically coming out tomorrow and really need this payment to post! Starting to panic a little...

It normally takes 24-48 hours for payments to process after certification, even if you've been getting them regularly. The system runs payment batches at different times and there can be delays. Sunday certifications sometimes process a bit slower in my experience. You should see it by tomorrow morning at the latest if there aren't any issues with your claim.

•Thanks for the info! Do you know if there's any way to check if the payment is actually processing? The EDD website just shows my last payment from 2 weeks ago.

•That's reassuring! I'll try to be patient but it's so stressful when you're counting on the money.

The EDD system is frustratingly inconsistent with payment timing. I've been on SDI for 4 months now for my back surgery recovery, and sometimes I see the money within 12 hours of certifying, other times it's taken up to 72 hours with no explanation for the difference. If you certified Sunday morning, I'd expect to see it by Tuesday afternoon at the latest. One thing to watch for - make sure your claim hasn't hit any review flags. Those can cause unexpected delays and the system won't tell you until you call in.

•Hmm, that's concerning. How would I know if there are review flags? Nothing in my account looks different from previous certifications.

•That's the problem - you can't see flags on the online portal. If your payment doesn't show up by tomorrow afternoon, you should call EDD directly. And be prepared to wait on hold for hours unless you use a service like Claimyr (claimyr.com). They got me connected to an EDD agent in under 25 minutes when I had a payment delay issue last month. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd - totally worth it when you're anxious about missing bill payments.

Sometimes the bank holds the deposit too, not just edd being slow. My sister got disability after her c-section and bofa would sometimes show the pending deposit a day before it was available to spend.

•This is correct. BofA often shows pending deposits before they're available, but you can actually call the BofA EDD debit card customer service line to check if there's a pending deposit even before it shows in your online account. That's sometimes faster than waiting for EDD to update their system. The number should be on the back of your card.

•Oh no, that sounds awful! I'm pretty sure I filled everything out correctly - it's the same process I've done twice before. The form was pretty simple and I double-checked everything. Really hoping I don't have to go through the calling nightmare!

Just wanted to update everyone - payment finally posted to my BofA card this morning (about 36 hours after certifying). Thanks for all the reassurance and advice! I guess I just needed to be more patient.

•That's great! For future reference, it's normal for there to be some variation in payment timing. The EDD systems run different processing batches throughout the week, and BofA also has its own processing schedule. As long as your certification doesn't have any issues, you'll typically see the payment within 2 business days.

I had a similar issue back in January when my disability got extended. I would recommend saving some of each payment as a buffer if you can so you're not cutting it so close with bill payments. The EDD system is just too unpredictable - I learned that the hard way when my car payment bounced because of a 3-day delay. Now I keep at least 2 weeks of expenses in savings as a buffer during my disability period.

•That's really good advice. I've been living too close to the edge with these payments. Going to try to build a small buffer once I get caught up.
