EDD SDI payments stuck in processing for over a week - is this normal?

Hi everyone, I'm getting really anxious about my disability payments. My claim was approved two weeks ago, but I still haven't received my first payment. The EDD website shows my certification was processed, but the payment has been 'pending' for 9 days now. The payment calendar said I should receive it within 3-4 days after certification. This is my first time on SDI and I'm running out of savings fast. Has anyone else experienced longer than normal wait times for their payments recently? Is this just regular processing time or should I be concerned something's wrong with my claim? Really appreciate any insights!

Thanks for letting me know! That's actually reassuring to hear it's not just me. How did your friend eventually get their payment? Did they have to contact EDD or did it just show up?

The standard processing time should be 3-4 business days, but there's definitely been delays lately. I recommend checking your SDI Online account to make sure there are no certification issues or identity verification requirements pending. Sometimes they need additional information but don't clearly notify you. Also, verify that your banking information is correct on the EDD website - I've seen people wait weeks only to discover their direct deposit info was slightly off.

I double-checked everything you mentioned. My certification says "processed" and my banking info is definitely correct (I triple-checked the numbers). There's no notification about needing additional info either. I guess I just need to wait longer?

OMG I WAITED TWO WEEKS FOR MY PAYMENT!!! EDD is THE WORST! They don't care if we can't pay bills or buy food. I called them every single day and nobody picked up. When I finally got through the agent had NO EXPLANATION for the delay. Said something about "processing backlog" and "high volume of claims" - SAME EXCUSES EVERY TIME!!!!

That sucks you had to go through that. Did your payment eventually come through automatically or did you have to do something to get it released?

It just randomly showed up in my account one day!! No explanation, no notice, nothing. I was checking my bank account like 5 times a day until it finally appeared. Complete joke of a system.

I had payment delays back in January that lasted about 8 days beyond the normal processing time. What worked for me was calling EDD directly. Yes, it's nearly impossible to get through on their regular line, but I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual EDD representative in about 20 minutes. They have a video demo here: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd The agent I spoke with was able to see there was a random system flag on my claim that was holding up payment and they cleared it right away. Payment arrived the next business day. Sometimes you just need to talk to a human to get these things resolved.

That's really helpful, thank you! I've been trying to call for days but keep getting the automated message saying call volume is too high. I'll check out that service. Did they explain what caused the flag on your account? I'm wondering if something similar might be happening with mine.

In my case, there was some confusion because I had a previous UI claim last year, and the system apparently needed manual verification that I wasn't double-dipping benefits (which I definitely wasn't). The agent said these random flags happen sometimes and usually require a rep to manually clear them. Worth checking if something similar is happening with yours!

My payment was late by 6 days and I almost had a panic attack because I needed to pay rent. My landlord was NOT happy! Then I noticed EDD had sent me a message through the SDI Online portal that I completely missed asking me to verify something. Check your messages section!!

Thanks for the tip! I just checked my SDI Online inbox and there's nothing there - no messages at all. So that's not the issue in my case. Seems like there are a lot of different reasons these payments get delayed...

I'm currently on week 5 of SDI for surgery recovery and noticed the payment delays tend to happen at the beginning of a claim. My first payment was delayed about 7 business days, but now they're coming through within 2-3 days of certification. It might just be that initial payments have extra verification steps. Also, make sure you're counting business days, not calendar days. If you certified on a Thursday or Friday, it could take until the next Wednesday or Thursday to get paid with the current delays.

That makes a lot of sense about the first payment! I hadn't considered there might be extra verification for the initial payment. I certified on a Monday so it's definitely been more than just weekend delays. This gives me hope that future payments might be faster once this first one finally processes.

I called the EDD today about my own delay (been waiting 5 days) and they told me they're experiencing system issues that are affecting payment processing times. The rep said they're aware of the problem and working on it, but couldn't give me a timeline for resolution. She recommended continuing to check your account daily and said there's no need to call unless it goes beyond 14 business days. Hope that helps!

That's super helpful current information, thank you! It's frustrating there's no timeline, but at least it confirms there's a known issue and I'm not doing anything wrong. I'll try to be patient for a few more days before exploring other options.

Just want to share my experience that might be relevant. I was waiting for my payment for almost 2 weeks and getting really worried. Then I remembered my friend had a similar issue and it turned out her doctor hadn't fully completed the medical certification form. I called my doctor's office and sure enough, they had only partially submitted the required documentation. Once they completed it properly my payment arrived 2 days later. You mentioned your claim was approved though, so this probably isn't your issue. But thought I'd mention it just in case!

Thanks for sharing that! My claim status says "approved" and the certification status says "processed" so I think my doctor's paperwork went through okay. But good to know for anyone else reading this thread who might have incomplete medical documentation!

Just checking back - any updates? Did your payment come through yet?

Yes! The payment finally showed up in my account this morning - took exactly 12 business days from certification. No explanation for the delay, it just appeared. So for anyone else experiencing this, sometimes you just have to wait it out. Thanks everyone for all your help and suggestions!
