I'm so sorry you're going through this stress, Keisha! I went through almost the exact same situation in 2023 - pregnancy disability ended in March, then filed for PPD in April. Your weekly benefit amount will definitely stay the same since you're filing within the same benefit year. Both claims will use the same base period for calculating your benefits, so that $850/week should remain consistent. The processing time is unfortunately unpredictable. Mine took about 18 days, but I've heard anywhere from 2-6 weeks depending on how backed up they are. The key thing that helped speed mine up was having my doctor be very specific in the medical certification that PPD is a distinct condition from pregnancy recovery. One tip: if you have any energy for it, try calling EDD first thing in the morning right at 8am when they open. I found I had better luck getting through then rather than later in the day. Also, make sure to keep certifying for benefits even while it's processing - you can backdate once it's approved. You've got this, and the financial part should work out the same as your pregnancy claim! Take care of yourself during this difficult time.
Thank you so much Ava, this is exactly what I needed to hear! It's such a relief to know that $850/week should stay the same. 18 days feels like forever when you're waiting but at least that gives me a realistic timeline to expect. I'll definitely try calling at 8am tomorrow - that's a great tip about timing! And yes, my doctor was very clear on the forms that PPD is completely separate from pregnancy recovery, so hopefully that helps move things along. I've been keeping up with certifying even though nothing's been paid yet, so glad to hear that was the right thing to do. The stress of not knowing when money will come in has definitely been making my PPD symptoms worse, so I'm trying to focus on the fact that it should all work out financially in the end. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience - it means a lot to know others have been through this exact situation and came out okay!
I'm going through something really similar right now! My pregnancy SDI ended in late December and I just filed for PPD about 3 weeks ago. Still waiting for approval but from everything I've researched and heard from others, your weekly benefit should stay exactly the same since you're filing so close together. The $850/week you were getting should carry over to your PPD claim because they'll use the same base period earnings to calculate it. The frustrating part is definitely the processing time - mine has been "under review" for 3 weeks now and it's driving me crazy not knowing when payments will start again. One thing that's helped my anxiety a bit is setting up text alerts through the EDD portal so I get notified immediately if there are any status changes. Also, I've been keeping a detailed log of all my symptoms and treatments to document the PPD in case they need additional information. The financial stress definitely doesn't help with the depression, but try to hang in there. From what everyone says, the benefit amount consistency is one thing we don't have to worry about at least. Hoping both our claims get processed soon!
I'm dealing with this exact same issue! My claim just disappeared from the system yesterday and I was honestly panicking until I found this thread. It's both frustrating and reassuring to see how common this problem has become lately - frustrating because we shouldn't have to deal with these system glitches when we're relying on these benefits, but reassuring because it means it's likely a technical issue rather than something wrong with our individual accounts. I'm definitely going to try the mobile app suggestion first since that seems like the easiest quick fix to check. The advice about calling right at 8 AM sharp seems to be the consensus from everyone who's actually gotten through successfully, so I'll be setting multiple alarms for that! That $20 calling service is starting to sound pretty reasonable too - I mean, what's $20 compared to potentially wasting an entire day on hold with that awful EDD music? Sometimes you have to weigh your sanity against the cost. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences and practical advice here. This community is honestly a lifesaver for navigating EDD's endless technical chaos. I'll definitely report back with updates once I try these suggestions. Hoping we all get this resolved soon! 🤞
Hey Aisha! I'm also new to this community but wow, reading through everyone's experiences here has been such an eye-opener. It's crazy how widespread this issue seems to be right now - definitely makes me feel less alone in dealing with this EDD chaos! The mobile app approach seems like such a smart first step since it's quick and easy to try. And yes, that 8 AM calling strategy is definitely the move based on what everyone's saying. I'm planning to do the same thing - multiple alarms set because there's no way I'm missing that window! You're so right about the $20 calling service too. At some point it's just about protecting your mental health and time. EDD's hold music could probably be classified as psychological torture at this point! 😅 This thread has honestly been a goldmine of practical advice. Really hoping we all get through this soon and can share some success stories. Will definitely be checking back for updates from everyone. Thanks for adding to the conversation - it helps knowing we're all figuring this out together! 🙏
I'm going through this exact same nightmare right now! My claim disappeared from the system about 4 days ago and I've been losing sleep over it. Finding this thread has been such a relief - seeing that so many others are experiencing the same issue makes me feel way less panicked about the whole situation. The mobile app suggestion is brilliant - I can't believe I didn't think to try that! Definitely downloading it right now to see if it shows anything different than the website. And wow, the unanimous advice about calling at exactly 8 AM is super helpful. I had no idea timing could make such a huge difference with getting through to EDD. That $20 calling service is honestly looking more and more appealing. I mean, what's twenty bucks compared to potentially sitting on hold all day listening to that torturous EDD music? Sometimes you just have to invest in your sanity! It's so frustrating that we have to become detectives just to figure out what's wrong with their system, but this community is absolutely amazing for sharing real solutions that actually work. I'm going to try the mobile app first, then the 8 AM call strategy if needed. Will definitely update everyone on how it goes - fingers crossed we all get this resolved soon! Thanks everyone for making this feel less overwhelming! 🙏
I'm new to this community but this thread has been incredibly helpful as I'm facing a similar situation! I filed for UI about two weeks ago after being terminated from my retail management job, but I've been dealing with severe depression and anxiety that's gotten much worse over the past few months. My doctor just recommended I consider disability instead. Reading through everyone's experiences here, it's clear that the key factors are: 1) Having medical documentation that predates job loss, 2) Withdrawing UI before certifying, 3) Being transparent with EDD about the transition, and 4) Having your medical provider be very specific about functional limitations on the DE 2501 form. What I found most reassuring is hearing from people like @Alice Fleming and @Jordan Walker who recently went through this exact process successfully. It's encouraging to know that EDD generally handles these transitions reasonably when you have proper documentation and haven't received UI payments yet. @Carmen Reyes - your case sounds very strong since you have 3 months of therapy records before termination and your therapist can clearly document how your symptoms prevent you from coding. The fact that you were already considering medical leave back in December shows this isn't a sudden decision. For anyone else reading this thread, I think the collective wisdom here is invaluable. The step-by-step processes shared by community members who've successfully navigated this situation are exactly what someone in crisis needs to see. Thanks to everyone for being so generous with sharing your experiences and advice!
Welcome to the community @Freya Andersen! I'm also new here but have been following this thread closely as I'm in a remarkably similar situation. It's been so helpful to see the detailed experiences from @Alice Fleming, @Jordan Walker, and others who successfully made this transition recently. Your summary of the key factors is spot-on - those four points really capture the essential elements for a successful UI to SDI switch. What strikes me most about this thread is how common this situation actually is, despite feeling so isolating when you're going through it alone. The retail management environment can be incredibly stressful and toxic, so I completely understand how that could exacerbate depression and anxiety. It's encouraging that your doctor is supportive of the disability option - having that professional backing makes such a difference in the process. One thing I've noticed from reading everyone's experiences is that being proactive seems to be crucial. The people who called EDD immediately after deciding to switch and had their medical providers complete the paperwork promptly seemed to have the smoothest experiences. @Carmen Reyes definitely has a strong foundation for her case, and it sounds like you re'in a good position too with your doctor s'recommendation. The collective knowledge shared in this thread really does provide a roadmap for navigating what can be an overwhelming bureaucratic process. Thanks for highlighting those key takeaways - they ll'probably help future community members who find themselves in similar situations!
I'm new to this community but wanted to jump in because I'm currently going through almost the exact same situation as you @Carmen Reyes! I filed for UI about 3 weeks ago after being laid off from my marketing job, but my anxiety and depression have gotten so severe that I can barely function. My therapist just suggested I should apply for SDI instead. Reading through this entire thread has been incredibly enlightening - I had no idea you could switch from UI to SDI before receiving payments. The step-by-step guidance from @Alice Fleming and @Amara Adeyemi especially has given me a clear roadmap for how to proceed. Your case sounds really strong since you have documented therapy sessions from before your termination and your therapist can clearly articulate how your symptoms prevent you from performing your job duties. The fact that you were already considering medical leave in December shows this isn't just a reaction to being fired. I'm planning to call EDD tomorrow using the strategy others mentioned - explaining that I received medical guidance that my condition prevents me from working and requesting withdrawal of my UI claim before filing for SDI. Having concrete examples from people who just went through this process successfully has given me so much more confidence about navigating what seemed like an impossible bureaucratic maze. Thank you to everyone in this thread for sharing such detailed experiences - this community is incredibly valuable for helping people through these challenging situations!
Congratulations on finally getting through! Your experience really highlights how important timing is with EDD calls. For anyone else still struggling to reach them, I'd recommend keeping a log of when you call and what happens - sometimes there are patterns to when the lines are less busy. Also, if you do get disconnected while waiting, try calling back immediately as sometimes you can get back into the queue faster. The 8am strategy seems to work for a lot of people based on what I've seen in this community.
This is such great advice about keeping a call log! I wish I had thought of that when I was going through this process. It would have helped me figure out the best times to call instead of just randomly trying throughout the day. The immediate callback tip after getting disconnected is really smart too - I'll definitely remember that for future reference. It's amazing how much strategy goes into something that should be straightforward like checking on your own claim status.
I'm so glad you were able to get through and get some clarity on your claim status! The 8am calling strategy really does seem to be the key based on what I've seen here. I've been dealing with a similar situation - my claim has been pending for about 10 days now and I've been getting anxious about it. Your update gives me hope that persistence will pay off. It's frustrating that we have to work so hard just to get basic information about our own claims, but at least knowing there's a process happening in the background helps with the stress. Thanks for sharing your experience and following up with the community!

Update: My claim was just approved! It took 11 days from when I filed online. You were all right - they calculated my benefits automatically based on previous wage reporting. My weekly benefit amount is $1,325 which seems correct based on my salary. Thanks everyone for your help and reassurance!

Congrats on the quick approval! That's really reassuring to hear. I'm actually going through a similar situation right now - filed my SDI claim two weeks ago for anxiety/depression and was also confused about the missing wage section. Your post and all these responses have been super helpful. Sounds like I just need to be patient and wait for the processing. Did you get any email notifications when your claim status changed, or did you have to keep checking the portal?

•@Paolo Moretti I got an email notification when my claim was approved, but honestly I was checking the portal pretty obsessively every day anyway lol. The email just said Your "claim status has been updated and" then I had to log in to see the details. Two weeks is still within normal processing time, especially for mental health claims since sometimes they need additional review. Hang in there - the waiting is definitely the hardest part when you re'already dealing with anxiety/depression. Hope yours gets approved soon!
