EDD SDI payments delayed - Does disability pay on specific days?

I started on disability at the beginning of the month and certified for my first two weeks right away, but I haven't received ANY payments yet! It's been 3 weeks and my rent is due next week. I'm starting to panic. Does EDD pay out SDI on specific days like Sundays? I heard somewhere that payments always process on weekends but nothing has hit my account. My online account shows my claim is 'Active' but there's no payment history at all. This is my first time on disability (herniated disc from work injury) and I can't get through on the phone. Every morning I call like 30 times and just get the 'too many callers' message before it hangs up on me. Anyone know what's going on or how long I should expect to wait? Does the first payment always take longer?

they dont pay on specific days like sundays... they process payments when they process your certification. first payment can take longer but 3 weeks is a bit much. check that your doctor actually submitted their certification form correctly, thats usually the holdup.

Thanks for responding. My doctor said they submitted everything but I'm not sure how to verify that on my account? Is there somewhere I can see if they received the medical certification?

EDD doesn't have specific payment days for SDI like they sometimes do with unemployment. There are a few things you should check: 1) Make sure you completed your DE 2501 claim form correctly 2) Verify your doctor submitted the medical certification (call their office and confirm) 3) Check if your SDI Online account shows any "Outstanding Tasks" or messages about missing information 4) Confirm your payment method is set up correctly (BofA card or direct deposit) For first-time disability claims, there's also a 7-day unpaid waiting period before benefits start. So if you filed exactly 3 weeks ago, you'd only be eligible for payments covering about 2 weeks so far. But you should definitely have received something by now if everything was filed correctly. If your claim shows as "Active" that's a good sign, but you need to speak with a representative to find out what's causing the delay.

Thank you for the detailed response! I did double-check and there are no outstanding tasks showing in my account. I'll call my doctor's office today to make sure they actually submitted everything. I definitely filed more than 7 days before my first certification, so the waiting period should be over.

If your SDI claim shows as 'Active' but you still haven't received payment after 3 weeks, there's almost certainly an issue that needs attention. The most common delays happen because: 1. The medical provider certification is incomplete or contains errors 2. There's a discrepancy between your last day worked and first day of disability 3. Your identity verification is pending (especially for first-time claimants) 4. There's a wage verification hold on your claim You absolutely need to speak with an SDI representative to resolve this. Unfortunately, as you've discovered, getting through on the phone can be nearly impossible during busy periods. I was in a similar situation last year and wasted days trying to get through. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me connect with an EDD representative without the constant redialing. You can see how it works in their video: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd Once I got through, they found that my doctor had submitted the certification but there was a discrepancy in dates that was holding up the whole claim. Fixed it in one call and had my payment within 48 hours.

Thank you! I'm going to check that service out because I'm desperate at this point. I called my doctor and they swear they submitted everything correctly, but clearly something's wrong. I need to find out what's happening before my rent is due!

The EDD system is COMPLETELY BROKEN!!! I had to wait 5 WEEKS for my first disability payment and nearly got evicted. There's no rhyme or reason to when they pay - it's whenever they feel like processing your claim. And good luck getting anyone on the phone to help. The whole system is designed to make people give up!!! You need to be persistent and call EXACTLY at 8:00 AM when they open. Like literally be dialing at 7:59:59. Sometimes that works. Otherwise you'll just hear the stupid message about too many callers ALL DAY LONG.

5 weeks?! That's terrifying. I can't wait that long. I've been trying the 8AM trick but still no luck getting through. Did you ever figure out what caused your delay?

They claimed there was an "eligibility interview" needed because I had some vacation time paid out when I left my job. Nobody bothered to TELL ME this or schedule anything! I only found out after I finally got through to someone. The system is DESIGNED to make you fail!

I went through this exact situation in February with my pregnancy disability claim. Here's what I learned: 1. First payments are often delayed because they do more verification steps (especially if you're a first-time claimant) 2. Unlike unemployment, disability payments don't follow a set schedule - they process each certification individually 3. The waiting period (7 days) doesn't start until after your disability begins, so make sure you're counting correctly 4. Your payment history won't show anything until they actually process a payment In my case, I eventually discovered my employer had reported different wages than what I claimed, causing a manual review. I had to upload pay stubs to verify my correct wages. The frustrating part is you won't know what's happening without talking to someone. I'd recommend first verifying with your doctor that they submitted the correct form (DE 2501D). Sometimes they think they submitted it but it never went through properly. If your claim is showing as Active, that's actually a good sign! It means your basic claim info is accepted, but something is holding up payment processing.

Thank you for sharing your experience! I didn't think about the wage verification issue. I did switch jobs about 6 months ago, so maybe that's causing a problem? I'm going to try to get through to someone tomorrow morning.

UPDATE: I finally got through to EDD this morning! Used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and it actually worked - got connected to a rep in about 20 minutes. Turns out there was a problem with my medical certification. My doctor submitted it, but they used an older version of the form that didn't have all the required information. The EDD rep said they sent a request for updated info to my doctor's office TWO WEEKS AGO but nobody told me! I immediately called my doctor and they're submitting the correct form today. The rep said once they receive it, I should get paid within 2-3 business days. Fingers crossed! For anyone else waiting on payments - definitely try to get through to someone on the phone. There might be an issue you don't know about.

Thanks for the update! This is exactly why it's so important to get through to a representative when payments are delayed. There's often something specific holding up your claim that you'd never know about otherwise. Glad you're getting it resolved!

This is such a common issue unfortunately! I went through something similar last year and the stress of waiting for that first payment while bills pile up is absolutely awful. One thing that helped me was documenting everything - keep records of when you certified, when you called, what your doctor's office told you, etc. Sometimes EDD will ask for this information later. Also, if you haven't already, make sure you're checking your SDI Online account daily. Sometimes they'll post messages or requests for additional information that aren't obvious at first glance. Look under any "Messages" or "Correspondence" sections. Really glad you got through and found out what the actual problem was! It's so frustrating that they don't proactively notify you when there are issues with your claim. Hope you get paid soon!
