How to get W-2 tax form from EDD disability payments? Can't find mine for 2025 taxes

I received SDI benefits for about 4 months last year (March-July) after my back surgery, but I haven't gotten my tax form yet for filing my 2025 taxes. I know I need to report the disability income on my taxes but have no idea where to get the form. Usually employers mail W-2s by end of January, right? Is EDD different? Do they even send W-2s for disability or is it some other form? I checked my mail carefully and haven't received anything from EDD. Is there a website where I can download it? Getting worried as my tax appointment is in 2 weeks and I need ALL my income forms. Help!

EDD doesn't send W-2s for disability - they send Form 1099-G for reporting your SDI income. They should have mailed it by January 31, but you can also access it online through your UI Online account at edd.ca.gov. Just log in, go to the "1099G" section, and you should be able to download your tax form for disability benefits. If you can't find it there, you'll need to call EDD directly.

Thank you! I didn't realize it's a 1099-G instead of a W-2. I'll check my UI Online account right now. I hope I can remember my password...

I had this same problem last year! I never got my form in the mail and couldn't figure out where to find it online. I spent DAYS trying to reach someone at EDD. Would call at 8am sharp and still couldn't get through. So frustrating!

I know it's frustrating to deal with EDD! Have you tried using Claimyr to get through to an EDD agent? It saved me HOURS of trying to call when I had issues with my SDI tax forms. They connect you directly with an EDD representative so you don't have to keep calling and getting disconnected. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked and I got my tax form issue sorted out in one call.

The form you need is a 1099-G (not a W-2) for disability benefits. You have three options: 1) LOG IN TO UI ONLINE: Go to edd.ca.gov, sign into your UI Online account, and navigate to the 1099G section. You can view, print, or request a copy to be mailed. 2) CALL EDD: Call 1-866-401-2849, their automated 1099-G request line. You'll need your Social Security Number, but can request a form without speaking to a person. 3) CONTACT EDD DIRECTLY: If options 1 and 2 don't work, call their main disability line at 1-800-480-3287. Keep in mind that for 2025 taxes, only SDI benefits received in 2025 will appear on this form. If your disability period crossed calendar years, you may need forms from multiple years.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I just checked my UI Online account but couldn't find the 1099G section anywhere. I'm going to try the automated line first since that seems faster than waiting on hold. Much appreciated!

Not to add confusion, but disability benefits aren't reported on a W-2 or 1099-G - they're reported on a 1099-NEC for state disability insurance! At least that's what I received for my pregnancy disability leave. Are you sure you're not confusing SDI with unemployment benefits? Unemployment comes on a 1099-G, but SDI is different...

Actually, that's incorrect. California State Disability Insurance (SDI) benefits are reported on a 1099-G, not a 1099-NEC. The 1099-NEC is for non-employee compensation (like contractor work). EDD reports both unemployment AND disability benefits on 1099-G forms, but they're separate entries on the form. Box 1 is for unemployment compensation while Box 2 is for state/local income tax refunds. The 1099-G will specify which benefits are being reported. Perhaps you received both types of benefits or there was some other special circumstance with your pregnancy disability?

OMG I'M HAVING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM!!!! Been looking EVERYWHERE for my disability tax form. Called EDD like 27 times yesterday and kept getting disconnected. Their website is USELESS and I can't find anything about 1099 forms anywhere on my account. My tax guy is getting super annoyed with me for not having all my documents ready. WHY is this system so broken???? 😡😡😡

I feel your pain! This is so frustrating. Let me know if you find a solution before I do. I'm going to try the automated line that someone suggested above: 1-866-401-2849.

I had the same experience trying to call EDD about my missing tax forms. After getting nowhere for days, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected to an EDD representative. They have a good video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. It got me through to someone who helped me get my tax documents sorted out. Just sharing since it saved me a lot of frustration!

my tax guy said if u dont get the form u can just use the total from ur last payment stub from edd it shows the year-to-date amount that works too

While you can use your payment stubs to estimate your total SDI benefits for the year, it's not recommended to file your taxes without the official 1099-G form. The IRS receives a copy of your 1099-G directly from EDD, and if the numbers don't match exactly, it could trigger an audit or delay your refund. It's best to get the official form through one of the methods I mentioned earlier. If you absolutely cannot get your 1099-G before the filing deadline, you can file for an extension and then amend your return once you receive the official document.

When I finally got my tax form last year, I found out you have to report EVERY PENNY of disability income on your taxes! No deductions or anything! I was shocked because they already took taxes out of my disability checks but I still had to pay MORE taxes when I filed! Just a heads up so you're not surprised.

That's partially correct. SDI benefits are subject to federal income tax but NOT California state income tax. When you received your payments, you had the option to have federal taxes withheld (usually 10%), but that might not cover your entire tax liability depending on your tax bracket and other income. If you didn't have taxes withheld from your SDI payments or didn't have enough withheld, you might owe additional taxes when filing. This is why some people end up owing more even though they had some taxes taken out already.

UPDATE: I finally got through to EDD using the automated line (1-866-401-2849)! Turns out they sent my 1099-G to my old address even though I updated my address on UI Online when I moved last year. The representative said they can mail a new one, but it'll take 7-10 business days. Since my tax appointment is next week, they're also emailing me a copy within 48 hours. Just wanted to update in case anyone else has this issue!

That's great news! The address issue is a common problem. EDD has multiple systems and sometimes address updates in one system don't transfer to others. For anyone else reading this with a similar issue, another option is requesting an immediate fax of your 1099-G if you have access to a fax machine or fax service. EDD can usually fax the form the same day, which is faster than waiting for email or mail.

glad u got it figured out!! tax stuff is so stressful

So glad to see this thread! I'm dealing with the same issue right now. I received SDI benefits for about 6 months last year after a car accident, and I'm also missing my tax form. Based on what everyone's shared here, it sounds like I need to look for a 1099-G form, not a W-2. I'm going to try logging into my UI Online account first, and if that doesn't work, I'll call that automated line at 1-866-401-2849. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - it's really helpful to know I'm not the only one struggling with this! The EDD system can be so confusing when you're already dealing with recovery and now tax season on top of it.

Welcome to the club! I just went through this same nightmare a few weeks ago. You're definitely on the right track - it's a 1099-G form for SDI benefits, not a W-2. That automated line (1-866-401-2849) actually worked pretty well for me when I couldn't find my form online. Just have your SSN ready and be patient with the prompts. Also, if you moved at all during or after your disability period, definitely mention that when you call - seems like address issues are super common with EDD's tax forms. Hope you get it sorted out quickly! The whole process is way more confusing than it needs to be.

I went through this exact same situation last year! After my knee surgery, I collected SDI for about 5 months and was so confused when tax time came around. Like others have mentioned, you're looking for a 1099-G form, not a W-2. What worked for me was calling that automated line at 1-866-401-2849 early in the morning (around 8 AM). Have your Social Security Number ready and follow the prompts to request your 1099-G. They can usually mail it within a week or email a copy if you need it faster. Also, double-check that EDD has your current address! I had updated my address in one part of their system but not another, so my form went to my old apartment. The customer service rep was actually really helpful once I got through and sorted out the address mix-up. Don't stress too much - you have options and plenty of people deal with this every year. The SDI benefits will show up in Box 1 of your 1099-G along with any unemployment benefits you might have received. Good luck with your tax appointment!

This is really helpful! I'm also dealing with SDI tax forms after my recovery period last year. The address issue seems to be a huge problem with EDD - I'm wondering if I should call to verify they have my current address before requesting the 1099-G, just to avoid any delays. Did you have to provide any specific information when you called to prove it was really you requesting the form? I'm always worried about identity verification issues with government agencies.

I'm going through the same thing right now! I received SDI benefits for 3 months last year after a work injury and I've been searching everywhere for my tax documents. Reading through all these comments has been such a lifesaver - I had no idea it was supposed to be a 1099-G form instead of a W-2! I tried logging into my UI Online account but couldn't find the 1099G section that people mentioned. I'm going to try calling that automated line at 1-866-401-2849 tomorrow morning. I'm also worried my form might have gone to my old address since I moved during my recovery period. It's so frustrating that EDD's system is this complicated when people are already dealing with health issues and recovery. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences - at least now I know what form to look for and have some concrete steps to take!
