How to get EDD SDI tax documents - does disability send 1099 forms?
Hey everyone, tax season's approaching and I'm trying to figure out how to report my disability income from 2024. Does anyone know if EDD sends out 1099 forms for SDI payments like they do for unemployment? I was on disability for about 4 months last year after my surgery and need to report that income, but I can't find anything in my SDI Online account about tax documents. I've looked through all the tabs and searched the website but there's nothing obvious about tax forms. Is there a specific section I'm missing or do I need to request this information somehow? Any help would be super appreciated!

SDI benefits are generally not taxable at the federal level, so EDD doesn't send a 1099 form for disability payments like they do for unemployment benefits (which are taxable). However, if you want a record of what you were paid, you can get a payment history by logging into your SDI Online account, clicking on 'View Payment Information,' and then 'Payment History.' This will show you all payments made during your claim period.

Oh wow, I had no idea SDI wasn't federally taxable! That's a huge relief. I'll check that payment history section you mentioned. Thank you so much!

To be more specific, California State Disability Insurance (SDI) benefits are NOT taxable at the federal level if your employer paid the SDI premiums. If YOU paid the SDI premiums (they were deducted from your paycheck, which is common in CA), then the benefits are not taxable at all. You don't need to report them on your federal or state tax returns. That's why EDD doesn't send 1099 forms for disability - there's no need to report it.

That makes perfect sense! Yes, the SDI was definitely deducted from my paychecks when I was working. So I don't need to report it at all? That's amazing news. Tax season just got a little less stressful.

Not all government payments are taxable. SDI in California is different from SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance), which may be taxable depending on your total income. Your tax preparer might have been confusing the two programs. If you paid into CA SDI through payroll deductions, those benefits are not federally taxable.

If you still need proof of your disability payments for some reason (like for a mortgage application or something), you can call EDD directly to request a payment verification letter. I had to get one last year for my apartment application. GOOD LUCK getting through to them though!! Their phone lines are always busy and they disconnect you after like 20 minutes of waiting. So frustrating!!!

I discovered a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to EDD when I needed payment verification too. It basically holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of frustration and redials. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd - definitely worth checking out if you need to actually speak to someone at EDD.

I was on disability off and on last year and was worried about the same thing. If you go to your SDI Online account, you can actually print out your payment history which shows all the payments you received. Go to

That's partially right. The SDI isn't federally taxable because you already paid for the benefit through payroll deductions. It's not exactly that it was \

I just went thru this whole process last month cuz I was on disability for 6 months in 2024. The EDD website is SO CONFUSING and nowhere does it clearly explain the tax stuff!!! After hours of research, I found out: \n\n1) Disability (SDI) is NOT taxable federally \n2) You do NOT get a 1099 for it \n3) You do NOT report it on your tax return \n4) But unemployment IS taxable and DOES send a 1099-G form \n\nThe EDD really should make this clearer on their website!! So much unnecessary stress!

This is such a helpful summary - thank you! And I agree, they should make this way more obvious on their website. Would have saved me a lot of worry!

Just wanted to chime in as someone who went through this exact situation! I was on SDI for 3 months after a car accident and was panicking about taxes too. Everyone here is absolutely right - no 1099 needed and it's not taxable income. What really helped me was printing out that payment history from SDI Online that others mentioned, just so I had documentation showing the dates and amounts in case I ever needed it for other purposes (like loan applications). The peace of mind was worth it! Also totally agree the EDD website could be WAY clearer about this - I spent hours searching before finding the answers here in this community.
