EDD SDI tax forms - Do they mail 1099G for disability benefits?
I've been on disability since October 2024 and I'm trying to prepare for tax season next year. Does EDD automatically mail you tax forms for SDI benefits received, or do we need to request them? Is it a 1099G like unemployment, or some other form? This is my first time on disability and I want to make sure I have everything organized for filing my 2024 taxes. Thanks!

They send out a 1099-G form in January. But sometimes they get lost in the mail. You can also view/print it online by logging into your SDI account after January 31st. Look under the "Forms" section.

•Thank you! That's exactly what I needed to know. Will they email when it's available or should I just keep checking after January 31st?

Just to clarify - SDI benefits use Form 1099-G (not W-2), which EDD usually mails out by January 31st of the following year. You'll want to wait until February before panicking if you don't receive it. However, you can also access all your tax forms electronically through your SDI Online account under "Tax Information" after logging in. Keep in mind that disability benefits may be taxable at the federal level depending on your income, but they're usually NOT taxable for California state taxes. I recommend consulting with a tax professional to understand your specific situation.

THEY NEVER SENT MINE! I had to call them 7 times and was on hold for HOURS before I could get someone to help me get my tax forms! The online system kept saying "no documents available" even though I received benefits!! It was a NIGHTMARE and I had to file an extension because of it! 😡

•I had the same problem last year trying to get my tax forms! I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an EDD agent within 5 minutes instead of spending hours on hold. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. Totally worth it when you're dealing with time-sensitive tax stuff and can't get through the normal way.

To address the confusion in this thread: 1. Yes, EDD issues 1099-G forms for State Disability Insurance (SDI) benefits 2. Federal taxability: SDI benefits ARE federally taxable if you paid for them with after-tax dollars (most common situation) 3. California state taxability: SDI benefits are NOT taxable for California state income tax If you don't receive your form by mail, you have three options: - Download it from SDI Online after January 31st - Call EDD to request a copy (though wait times can be long) - Calculate the total yourself from your payment history (this is acceptable for the IRS as long as you report all income

My brother works for H&R Block and he says you can file an amended return for up to 3 years if you forgot to include something. You'd use form 1040X I think?

•Thanks everyone for the helpful information! So to summarize: 1) They mail 1099-G forms by January 31st, 2) I can also get it online if I don't receive it, and 3) I need to report it on federal taxes but not state taxes. This is super helpful!

One important detail to add - if you're on SDI for a work-related injury and receiving Workers' Compensation at the same time, the tax treatment can be different. Workers' Comp is generally NOT taxable federally or state. If you're receiving both types of benefits, make sure you understand which portions are taxable. This gets complicated, so I definitely recommend working with a tax professional in that situation.

My situation this year is even more fun... I was on SDI for 3 months, then transitioned to PFL for bonding with my new baby. So I'll be getting TWO different tax forms? Anyone know how that works?
