Where to find 1099-G tax form for EDD SDI benefits received in 2024?
Hey everyone! I received disability benefits for a few months in 2024 after my surgery and now I need to file my taxes. I have no idea where to get the tax form that shows how much disability I received. Is it a W2? 1099? Does EDD mail it automatically or do I need to request it somewhere? I've looked through my SDI Online account but can't find anything tax-related. This is my first time dealing with disability taxes and I'm completely lost. Tax deadline is coming up fast and I'm starting to panic!

You're looking for Form 1099-G. EDD should have mailed it by January 31st, but you can also access it online through your UI Online account (not SDI Online). Go to edd.ca.gov, log in to UI Online, select 'More Services' and then '1099G' from the menu. You can view and print all your 1099-Gs there. If you don't have a UI Online account, you'll need to create one even if you only received SDI.

•Thank you!! I never created a UI Online account since I was only on disability. Do you know if I need to report this on my taxes even if I didn't get the form? I received about $11,500 in disability last year.

•I called EDD after waiting for mine for weeks and they said they're behind on mailing them this year. But you don't have to wait! I used Claimyr to get through to an EDD rep in about 15 minutes (claimyr.com) and they helped me access my 1099-G online immediately. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. Totally worth it because I needed to file my taxes ASAP.

The whole system is RIDICULOUS!!! Why do they make everything so complicated?? I've been trying for THREE WEEKS to get my tax forms! My accountant is about to drop me as a client because I can't get the paperwork together. And good luck calling them - I've tried FIFTY times and can't get through. But they sure had no problem taking taxes OUT of my disability checks every week!!!!

To clarify what others have said, your disability benefits are reported on Form 1099-G, the same form used for unemployment benefits. While SDI benefits are taxable at the federal level, they are NOT taxable at the California state level. You should be able to find your 1099-G in your UI Online account (not SDI Online). If you can't access it online and didn't receive it by mail, you can request a duplicate by calling 1-866-401-2849, but be prepared for long wait times. I recommend setting up your UI Online account if you haven't already, as it's the quickest way to access your tax documents.

•Thank you for explaining! I didn't realize they weren't taxable for state. I was confused because I thought disability had its own separate tax form since it's different from unemployment. I'll try setting up a UI Online account tonight.

When I was on disablty last year for my pregnancy they took out taxes every check so do I still need to file the disability income on taxes? My husband handles all our tax stuff and he's asking me for some form but I don't think I ever got one.

•Yes, you still need to report the income and include the 1099-G with your tax return, even if taxes were withheld from your payments. The 1099-G shows both the total benefits paid and any federal taxes that were already withheld. Your husband will need this information to complete your tax return correctly.

I had this exact problem last week! I created a UI Online account even though I've never been on unemployment, and all my 1099-G forms were there going back several years. It was pretty simple once I figured out I needed to use UI Online instead of SDI Online. The form shows both the total benefits paid and any federal taxes that were already withheld. Hope this helps!

•Just wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone who helped! I created a UI Online account and found my 1099-G right away. You were all right - it wasn't in SDI Online at all. For anyone else looking: after logging into UI Online, click on Form 1099G on the menu, then select the tax year 2024. You can view it right there and print it out. Such a relief to have this figured out before the tax deadline!

Just went through this same thing! One tip that saved me time - when you create your UI Online account, you'll need your SSN and some personal info, but you might also need details from a recent pay stub or tax return to verify your identity. Have those handy before you start the account setup process. Also, once you're in, the 1099-G section shows all your forms by year, so you can easily grab forms for previous years if you need them for amended returns or other purposes. The whole process took me maybe 10 minutes once I had all my info ready!

•This is super helpful! I was wondering about the identity verification part. I'm getting ready to create my UI Online account tonight and wasn't sure what documents I might need. Having my recent pay stub and last year's tax return ready will definitely save me from getting halfway through and having to start over. Thanks for the heads up about being able to see previous years too - I might actually need my 2023 form as well for some reason my accountant mentioned.

For anyone still struggling with this - I just want to emphasize that you absolutely need to report your SDI benefits on your federal tax return even if you didn't receive the 1099-G form yet. The IRS considers disability benefits as taxable income, so don't skip reporting it just because you're missing the form. You should have records of your weekly benefit amounts that you can use to calculate the total. But definitely try to get that 1099-G from UI Online first since it will also show any federal taxes that were already withheld, which could mean a refund for you! Also, keep in mind that while SDI is taxable federally, it's not taxable for California state taxes, so don't include it on your state return.
