EDD SDI tax forms for short-term disability after surgery - will I receive a 1099G?

Quick tax question! I received CA disability benefits for 6 weeks while recovering from surgery in late 2025. This is my first time on disability, and I'm trying to get my tax documents organized early. Will EDD send me some kind of tax form for the disability payments? I know regular unemployment comes with a 1099G, but not sure about SDI. Do I need to report this income on my taxes? If they do send something, around what month should I expect it? Thanks for any help!

California SDI benefits are not taxable at the federal level, so EDD doesn't issue a 1099-G for disability payments like they do for unemployment. You don't need to report your SDI benefits on your federal tax return. However, if you're in a high income bracket, a portion might be taxable, but that's pretty uncommon. Hope this helps!

Oh that's great news! One less form to worry about. Thank you for clearing that up.

What everyone always forgets to mention is that while SDI isn't federally taxable, some STATES do tax disability benefits! Make sure to check your specific state tax laws before assuming you don't need to report it anywhere.

This is totally wrong for California SDI. CA doesn't tax its own disability benefits either. Stop confusing people with misinformation!!

Just to add some clarification: California SDI benefits are NOT subject to federal income tax unless your income exceeds certain thresholds. If your adjusted gross income plus half your Social Security benefits exceeds $25,000 (single) or $32,000 (married filing jointly), then up to 50% of your benefits may be taxable. Above $34,000 (single) or $44,000 (married), up to 85% may be taxable. But for most people with normal income levels, you won't pay any federal tax on SDI and won't receive a tax form. And as mentioned, California state doesn't tax SDI benefits at all. If you're worried about missing documentation, you can always log into your SDI Online account and print a payment history for your records.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! My income isn't near those thresholds, so sounds like I'm in the clear. I'll definitely save my payment history just to be safe.

I was on disability for 3 months last year and spent HOURS trying to get through to EDD to ask this exact question! Nobody ever picked up and I left so many messages that never got returned. I finally found out the same info others are sharing here, but it was super stressful. If you need to contact EDD for any other disability questions, I'd recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They got me through to an actual EDD agent in about 20 minutes when I had questions about my extension. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd But yeah, for your tax question specifically - no form needed since it's not federally taxable for most people.

Does this claimyr thing really work? I've been trying to reach EDD for days about my claim that's been stuck on pending for almost 3 weeks...

MY WIFE GOT DISABILITY AFTER HER SURGERY AND WE WERE TOLD BY EDD THAT STATE DISABILITY INSURANCE BENEFITS ARE *NOT* TAXABLE BY FEDERAL OR STATE!!! The only exception is if you have PFL (Paid Family Leave) which IS taxable by federal but NOT by state. The whole system is completely ridiculous and needlessly complicated!!!!

There's often confusion around this. California State Disability Insurance (SDI) is actually funded by employee contributions, not government funds. It's a deduction you see on your paystubs as "CA SDI". Since you've already paid tax on that money when it was deducted from your paycheck, it's generally not taxed again when you receive benefits. This is different from Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), which is a federal program and may be taxable depending on your total income.

I just went through this last month! No tax forms for SDI. But make sure you keep track of how much you received anyway. My friend who does taxes told me it's good practice to keep records of all income even if it's not taxable, just in case you ever get audited. Better safe than sorry!

Just wanted to add my experience - I was on SDI for 8 weeks after knee surgery last year and can confirm what others are saying. No tax forms from EDD for disability benefits, and my tax preparer said not to worry about reporting it. The only thing I'd suggest is keeping your benefit payment records from your SDI Online account, just for your own files. It's nice to have documentation showing the dates and amounts in case you ever need it for other purposes (like applying for loans or anything that asks about income history). Recovery went smoothly and the whole SDI process was actually pretty straightforward once I got through the initial paperwork!

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to hear from someone who just went through the same thing. I'm glad your recovery went smoothly. Good point about keeping the payment records for other purposes - I hadn't thought about that but it makes sense for things like loan applications or other financial documentation. Did you find the SDI Online portal easy to navigate when you needed to print your payment history?
