EDD SDI tax forms missing - Do I need a 1099 for disability payments in 2025?

Been on disability since early October 2024 (4+ months now) and tax season is approaching fast. I expected to receive some kind of tax form from EDD for my disability payments but haven't gotten anything in the mail or on the SDI Online portal. Do they automatically send 1099s or some other tax document for disability benefits? If yes, when should I expect it? I'm trying to file my taxes early this year and this is the only thing I'm waiting for. This is my first time on disability so I have no idea how this works with taxes. Help!

Yes, you should receive a Form 1099-G from EDD for your disability benefits. EDD typically mails these out by January 31st each year, and they're also usually available electronically in your SDI Online account under the 'Forms' section. If you don't see it by early February, you might want to contact EDD directly.

Thank you! So I need to wait until the end of January? I was expecting it earlier since all my other tax forms are already coming in. Will check the portal again.

I had same problem last year lol. Forms come late, always waiting on EDD to get my taxes filed!

Ugh that's frustrating. Did you eventually get it in the mail or did you have to download it from somewhere?

Got it in mail finally after waiting like 3 weeks into February.

Just want to clarify something important here - you need to check if your SDI benefits are taxable in your situation. In California, state disability insurance benefits ARE reported on a 1099-G form, but whether they're taxable depends on who paid the premiums: - If your employer paid the SDI premiums: Your disability benefits ARE taxable - If YOU paid the SDI premiums with after-tax dollars: Your disability benefits are NOT taxable Most employees in California pay SDI premiums themselves through payroll deduction with after-tax dollars, which would make your benefits non-taxable. Check your pay stubs from before your disability to confirm.

Wait, that's really helpful information! I did pay SDI through payroll deductions. So you're saying I might not even need to report this income? I don't want to mess up my taxes.

You'll still get a 1099-G form, and your benefits will be reported there. You should include this form with your tax return, but you may be able to exclude the benefits from your taxable income if you paid all the premiums with after-tax dollars. I'd recommend checking with a tax professional to make sure you handle it correctly for your specific situation.

Don't waste time waiting for EDD!!! They are ALWAYS late with everything. I was on disability last year and didn't get my tax forms until mid-February even though they're supposed to send them by Jan 31. The whole system is broken. They expect us to file taxes on time but can't even get their paperwork out when they should.

If you're having trouble reaching EDD about your tax documents, try Claimyr. I was in the same situation last year and couldn't get through on the phone for days. Claimyr connected me with an EDD agent in under 25 minutes when I'd been trying for over a week on my own. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd and their website is claimyr.com. Totally worth it when you need answers about time-sensitive tax documents.

Thanks for the suggestion. If I don't see the form by early February I might try that. The waiting and uncertainty is stressing me out.

Just a tip - I've been on disability several times and learned you can actually view and download your 1099-G from the EDD website before they mail it. Go to https://edd.ca.gov/en/Unemployment/Get_Tax_Information and look for the 1099G section. You'll need to create an account if you don't already have one (separate from your SDI Online account). This usually updates with the current year's forms by mid-January, so you might be able to access it now. Also, keep in mind that if your total SDI benefits were under $10, they won't issue a 1099-G at all. Though that's probably not your case after several months on disability.

Thank you so much! I'll check out that website right now. Definitely received well over $10 so I should be getting a form.

anybody know if we can get in trouble if we just file without the 1099 from EDD? i don't wanna wait forever

I wouldn't recommend filing without including all your income. The EDD reports the 1099-G information to the IRS, so they'll know if you received disability benefits. If you file without including it, you could face penalties for underreporting income. Better to wait for the form or get the information online as suggested above.

Update: I was able to access my 1099-G through the website that @helpfultaxpro mentioned! It's different from the SDI Online portal, but once I created an account, I could see my tax form was already available. Thanks everyone for your help!

Great to hear! Glad you found it. The EDD systems can be confusing since they have different portals for different functions. Good luck with your taxes!

That's awesome that you found it online! For anyone else reading this thread, I just want to add that even though Oliver found his form, it's still worth double-checking the taxability issue that Kevin mentioned earlier. I made the mistake of assuming my SDI benefits were taxable when they actually weren't since I paid the premiums myself. Ended up having to file an amended return. If you paid SDI through payroll deductions (which most CA employees do), your benefits are likely not taxable income, but you should still report receiving the 1099-G. Definitely worth consulting a tax pro if you're unsure!
