When will EDD mail 1099G tax forms for 2024 SDI benefits? Anyone received theirs yet?

Hey everyone, I received disability benefits throughout 2024 and now I'm trying to get my taxes done early. My accountant is asking for my 1099G form from EDD but I can't seem to find any information about when these get sent out. Does anyone know the timeline for when EDD mails these tax forms for SDI benefits? And do they mail physical copies or are they only available online through the EDD website now? I checked my SDI Online account but don't see anything under the 'Forms' section. Getting a bit anxious since I'd like to file ASAP to get my refund. Thanks in advance!

EDD typically makes 1099G forms available by January 31st (required by law). They send physical copies by mail, but you can usually access them sooner in your SDI Online account under 'Form 1099G' in the menu. If you don't see it there yet, they're probably still processing them. Mine just showed up yesterday in my online account, but I haven't received the paper copy yet.

Thank you! I looked again this morning and still nothing in my account. I'll keep checking daily. Do you know if there's a specific place in the SDI Online menu? I only see general 'Forms' section but nothing specifically for tax documents.

Same here. Always comes early February for me too. I wouldn't worry too much - they never send them super early in January.

They're required by law to have them available by January 31st, but in my experience with California EDD, they often cut it close to that deadline. If you need it urgently, I'd recommend calling them directly to see if they can expedite or email you a copy. I've had to do this before when I was trying to close on a house and needed my tax returns completed quickly. Have you tried using Claimyr to get through to an EDD representative? I was in a similar situation last year and couldn't get through on the regular line, but Claimyr connected me with an agent in about 20 minutes. Their site is claimyr.com and you can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. They got me to an actual person who was able to send my 1099G right away.

I hadn't heard of Claimyr before - thanks for the suggestion! I'll give it until the end of the month, and if I don't see anything by then, I'll definitely try this service. My accountant says we have until April obviously, but I'm trying to get everything sorted early this year.

OMG the EDD tax forms are ALWAYS late!!! Every single year I've been on disability they never send them when they're supposed to. Last year I didn't get mine until FEBRUARY 10TH and I was FURIOUS because I had to wait to file my taxes!!! They'll probably blame it on "high volume" or "processing delays" like they ALWAYS DO!!!

While it can be frustrating, in my experience working with tax clients, January 31st is actually the legal deadline for sending 1099s, not the target date. Many government agencies and companies alike send them right at the deadline. EDD is generally compliant, though they may cut it close. If you need it urgently before then, calling is your best option, though getting through can be challenging.

SDI benefits ARE taxable on federal returns, but NOT taxable on California state returns. That's why EDD sends a 1099G form - you need to report the income on your federal tax return. If you haven't been doing this in previous years, you might want to consult with a tax professional about filing amended returns.

I called yesterday about this exact thing! The rep said they started sending them out last week but it takes about 2-3 weeks to get them all processed and mailed. She also mentioned you can access it online through UI Online rather than SDI Online for some weird system reason. Maybe try checking there?

That's super helpful! I didn't think to check UI Online since I was on disability, not unemployment. I'll check there tonight. Did the rep say anything about how to navigate to the tax forms once you're in UI Online?

I think she said something about clicking on History then there should be a Tax Form option? Sorry I didn't write it down exactly but it was something like that! Let me know if you find it, I'm still waiting for mine too.

My sister works for the state and she told me EDD is always behind on everything lol. But seriously though, I got SDI last year and received my 1099G on January 29th in the mail. I think you can also request it by phone if you're in a hurry.

Tax professional here. A few important points about EDD 1099G forms: 1) They must be postmarked by January 31st per IRS regulations 2) You can access them online through your UI Online account (not SDI Online) under the "Tax Information" section 3) If you received less than $10 in benefits, you may not receive a 1099G 4) Remember that while SDI benefits are federally taxable, they are NOT taxable on your California return 5) If you urgently need your 1099G, you can request a duplicate by calling EDD directly If you haven't received yours by February 7th, I would recommend contacting EDD to ensure they have your correct mailing address and to request an electronic or duplicate copy.

Thank you for such detailed information! I definitely received more than $10 in benefits (was on disability for 4 months). I'll check UI Online as you suggested, and if nothing shows up by early February, I'll contact them directly. Really appreciate the professional advice!
