EDD SDI Pregnancy Benefits - Do they send 1099 tax forms for 2024?

I received Pregnancy SDI benefits from August through November last year (2024) and I'm trying to get my taxes done now. I haven't gotten any kind of 1099 form or tax document from EDD for the disability payments. I started my Paid Family Leave bonding time in January 2025, so I know I wouldn't get anything for that yet, but shouldn't I have received something for the pregnancy disability part from last year? I've checked my mail obsessively and looked in my EDD SDI online inbox but there's nothing there. Do they even send tax forms for SDI benefits? If so, when do they typically arrive? I need to file my taxes soon and don't want to miss reporting this income if I'm supposed to!

You don't need to worry about a 1099 for SDI pregnancy benefits - they're not taxable at the federal level! California State Disability Insurance benefits (including pregnancy disability) are exempt from federal taxes, so EDD doesn't issue 1099 forms for them. However, your PFL bonding time benefits WILL be taxable when you receive them this year, so you'll get a 1099-G for those next tax season.

Oh wow, really?? That's such a relief! I was getting really stressed thinking I was missing an important tax document. So for my 2024 taxes, I just don't need to report the SDI pregnancy payments at all? That seems too good to be true!

i got SDI for my pregnancy too last year and didnt get any tax form. my sister told me its not taxable. dont think u need to report it

Exactly right! SDI benefits aren't subject to federal income tax, which is why you don't get a 1099 for them. However, they ARE reportable for state taxes in some situations - though California generally doesn't tax them either. Always good to double-check with a tax professional about your specific situation!

Wait I'm confused... So if I got regular disability (not pregnancy) do I need a 1099?? I broke my leg last Oct and was on SDI for 2 months. Haven't gotten any tax forms either and I'm filing next week!

Nope! ALL California State Disability Insurance benefits (SDI) - whether for pregnancy or any other medical condition like your broken leg - are exempt from federal taxes. No 1099 forms are issued for SDI. The only EDD benefits that are federally taxable are Unemployment Insurance (UI) and Paid Family Leave (PFL), which do generate 1099-G forms.

Be careful with this advice! While it's true that SDI benefits aren't federally taxable, there are some situations where you might still need to report them on your California state tax return. It depends on whether you made contributions to an SDI elective coverage program, or if your employer paid your SDI premiums. Most people don't need to worry about this, but if you're self-employed or have an unusual employment situation, you might want to consult a tax professional. Don't just assume!

Thanks for this note. I'm a regular W-2 employee and had the standard SDI deductions from my paycheck, so I think I fall into the standard category? But this is good to know that there are exceptions.

I had the EXACT same worry last year! Called EDD multiple times about my missing 1099 for pregnancy disability and couldn't get through to anyone. After days of frustration, I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected with an EDD rep within 15 minutes. They confirmed what others have said here - no 1099 needed because SDI isn't federally taxable. Their video demo shows how quick it is: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. Saved me so much stress about possibly filing incorrectly!

Is that service legit? I'm trying to reach someone about my claim status and keep getting disconnected when I call EDD directly.

Yes, it's completely legitimate. They basically navigate the phone system for you and get you in the call queue, then connect you when they reach a representative. Saved me hours of frustration. The EDD reps answer just like a normal call - Claimyr just helps you get through to them.

EXACTLY WHY THE SYSTEM IS SO FRUSTRATING!!! They make NOTHING clear about taxes. I spent WEEKS last year trying to figure this out and got different answers from every person I talked to. Some EDD reps said I needed the form, others said I didn't. Tax system is just designed to confuse regular people. The fact that none of us know for sure if we need to report this income or not is ridiculous!!!!

I understand your frustration, but this is actually one area where the rules are pretty clear. SDI benefits (including pregnancy disability) are not subject to federal taxes, which is why no 1099 is issued. This is stated in IRS Publication 525 and on the EDD website. The confusion often comes from people mixing up SDI with PFL or UI benefits, which ARE taxable federally.

When I was on SDI last year I was worried about the same thing! I actually went ahead and filed without reporting it since I never received any tax forms, and everything was fine. For what it's worth, I did get a 1099-G for my unemployment benefits from two years ago, so they definitely do send tax forms for the benefits that are taxable.

That's reassuring to hear! I was worried about getting in trouble for not reporting income, but it sounds like this is normal. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Just to add some clarity: per the EDD website, "State Disability Insurance (SDI) benefits are not subject to federal income tax. However, if you are required to report the SDI benefits you received on your California state tax return, you will receive a Form 1099-G." Most standard W-2 employees don't need to report SDI on their state returns, which is why most people never receive a 1099-G for their disability benefits.

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation. I think I understand now - no 1099 needed because my benefits aren't federally taxable, and as a regular W-2 employee, I probably don't need to report them on my state taxes either. What a relief!

I went through this exact same situation last year! I was panicking because I couldn't find any tax documents for my SDI pregnancy benefits from 2023. After doing a ton of research and calling around, I learned that California SDI benefits (including pregnancy disability) are NOT federally taxable, which is why you don't receive a 1099 form. It's actually a nice surprise since most income sources are taxable! Just make sure you keep good records of the payments you received in case you ever need them for other purposes, but you can file your 2024 taxes without worrying about reporting the SDI pregnancy benefits. Hope this helps ease your stress like it did mine!

This is exactly what I needed to hear! I'm new to all this and was really worried I was doing something wrong with my taxes. It's such a relief to know that multiple people have gone through the same thing and that it's actually normal not to get a 1099 for SDI pregnancy benefits. Thank you for sharing your experience - it really helps to hear from someone who went through the exact same situation!
