Will EDD send 1099-G tax forms for 2024 PFL and SDI benefits after baby?

I've been on pregnancy disability since November and just had my baby last week (yay but also omg so tired!). I got all my SDI payments during pregnancy and now I'm switching to baby bonding PFL. I just realized I have no idea how taxes work with all this! Will the EDD automatically send me tax forms for 2024 for both SDI and PFL payments? Do I need to request these forms somewhere or will they just show up? Also, are these benefits even taxable? I've heard conflicting things and don't want to mess up my taxes next year. Thanks for any help... my sleep-deprived brain can't handle figuring this out on my own right now!

Congrats on your new baby! Yes, EDD will send you a 1099-G form in January 2025 for all benefits paid in 2024. The form combines both your SDI and PFL payments. But here's the important part - in California, SDI and PFL benefits are NOT taxable for state income tax, but they ARE taxable for federal income tax. The 1099-G will be mailed to whatever address EDD has on file, so make sure that's current. You can also access your 1099-G forms online through your EDD account after Jan 31.

Thank you!! That's super helpful. I was worried I'd need to track down the forms myself. So I'll need to pay federal taxes but not state taxes on these benefits... good to know! Do you know if they withhold any taxes automatically or do most people end up owing at tax time?

my sister got SDI last yr and didnt get any tax forms til february!! she kept checking mail and freaking out. i think they just send them late lol

They're actually not late - tax forms legally don't have to be sent until January 31st. A lot of companies/agencies wait until the deadline to send them out. If you don't receive your 1099-G by mid-February though, you should definitely contact EDD.

This is a common question! For tax year 2024, EDD will mail 1099-G forms by January 31, 2025. But EDD's system is notoriously slow and unreliable. If you need your 1099-G quickly when tax season comes around, I'd recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an EDD agent. I was stuck waiting for my 1099-G earlier this year after moving, and after weeks of busy signals, I used their service to connect with an EDD rep in about 10 minutes who was able to update my address and expedite a new form. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 It saved me tons of frustration and prevented delays in filing my taxes.

Is this service legit?? I've been having the WORST time getting through to EDD about fixing a mistake on my previous 1099-G. Waited on hold for 2+ hours twice and got disconnected both times.

It's definitely legit - I was skeptical too, but it actually worked. They don't do anything you couldn't theoretically do yourself (repeatedly calling EDD until getting through), they just automate the process. Saved me hours of frustration.

BE CAREFUL about the address issue! I moved in the middle of my SDI/PFL period last year and COMPLETELY forgot to update my address with EDD (I updated it with like a million other places but forgot them). My 1099-G went to my old address and it was a whole NIGHTMARE trying to get a new one. Had to delay filing my taxes and everything. So definitely double-check your address is current in the EDD system!!! You can view/update it online through your SDI account.

Omg thank you for the reminder! We're actually planning to move in September so I definitely need to remember to update my address with EDD. I would have totally forgotten.

To add one more important detail: when you transition from SDI to PFL for baby bonding, technically these are two separate benefit programs, but for tax purposes, they're both reported on the same 1099-G form. Something else to be aware of - you can elect to have federal taxes withheld from your PFL payments (not SDI), but it's not automatic. Many people don't realize this and end up with a tax bill. You need to specifically request withholding by submitting a DE 4P form. Even though you're already receiving benefits, you can still submit this form for your remaining PFL payments if you want withholding.

Wait really? I had no idea I could have taxes withheld! I'm definitely going to look into submitting that DE 4P form. I'd much rather have smaller payments now than a big tax bill later. Thank you so much for mentioning this!

i got so confused by this last year! the 1099-G form doesnt break down which payments were SDI vs which were PFL, it just shows one total. made me worried i was double-reporting income or something. just put the full amount on your federal taxes (not state) and youll be fine

Everyone here is talking about 1099-G forms but my accountant told me California SDI isn't taxable AT ALL - not even federally! I didn't report my disability on my federal return last year and my accountant said that was correct. Now I'm confused... did I do my taxes wrong??

Your accountant is unfortunately incorrect. California SDI and PFL benefits ARE subject to federal income tax (but not state tax). This is clearly stated on the EDD website and in IRS publications. You should probably file an amended return for last year if you didn't report that income federally. Disability insurance from private policies may have different tax treatment, which might be where the confusion came from.

Oh no! That's really concerning. I'll definitely check with a different accountant. Thanks for letting me know!

One last tip - keep track of all your benefit payments throughout the year (screenshots of your EDD account or the paper statements they mail). Sometimes the 1099-G can have errors, and you'll want your own records to verify the amount is correct. If there is a discrepancy, you'll need to contact EDD for a corrected form, which can take time. Better to discover any issues early in tax season!
