Do I need to report EDD SDI pregnancy benefits on taxes? Will I get a 1099G form?
I'm currently receiving disability benefits for my pregnancy (started in January 2025). This is my first time on SDI and I'm confused about the tax situation. When I file my taxes next year, do I need to report these disability payments as income? Will EDD automatically send me a 1099G form for the pregnancy disability benefits? Also, are pregnancy disability benefits even taxable? I've been getting conflicting info from friends who said disability is tax-free but others say I'll owe taxes. I don't want to mess up my taxes or end up owing a bunch that I wasn't prepared for. Thanks for any help!

Yes, you'll receive a 1099G form from EDD for your pregnancy disability benefits. They typically mail them out by the end of January for the previous tax year. The SDI benefits ARE considered taxable income for federal tax purposes, but they are NOT taxable for California state taxes. So you'll need to report them on your federal return but not on your state return. You can also access your 1099G online through your EDD account if you don't receive it in the mail.

•Thank you so much! So I'll get a 1099G for 2025 benefits in January 2026? Is there any way to have taxes withheld now so I don't get hit with a big tax bill later?

Just FYI - your friends might be mixing up different types of disability. Some private disability insurance benefits are tax-free if you paid the premiums with after-tax money. But state disability (SDI) is different and is federally taxable like the other person said.

•That makes sense! I think one friend was talking about her private disability policy. This tax stuff is so confusing 😫

OMFG the EDD tax stuff is a NIGHTMARE!! When I was on pregancy disability last yr they NEVER sent my 1099G and I had to call them like 10 TIMES!!! Every time I called I got disconnected or waited forever. I finally got it in MARCH when taxes were almost due. The whole system is garbage!!!!

•I had a similar experience trying to get my 1099G. After weeks of trying to call EDD with no success, I found Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it got me through to an actual EDD rep in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. Saved me so much frustration when I needed to get tax documents sorted out.

you can also get ur 1099G online from ur EDD account. go to the same place you file ur claim and theres a tab for tax info. easier than waiting for mail

•This is the way to go! I haven't received a paper 1099G in years. Just log into UI Online, and then look for the 1099G tab on the left menu. You can view and print tax forms for the last 5 years.

When I had my baby last year, I was on SDI for pregnancy disability and then switched to Paid Family Leave after delivery. Just so you know, you'll get separate 1099Gs for each program if you do both. I was confused when I got two forms but that's normal. Both are federally taxable.

•That's really helpful! I'm planning to do PFL after the baby comes too. I didn't realize they'd send separate tax forms for each.

Just wondering, has anyone used a tax professional to handle their taxes when they had disability income? I'm thinking about using one this year since I have SDI, unemployment for a while, and regular work income. My taxes are getting complicated!

•If you have multiple income sources including SDI, it's definitely worth considering a tax professional. They can help ensure you're reporting everything correctly and potentially find deductions to offset any tax liability from your disability payments. I've used TurboTax successfully for years with disability income, but if you're uncertain, a pro can give you peace of mind.

One thing to keep in mind - you can elect to have federal taxes withheld from your SDI payments! There's a DE 4450 form you can submit to have 10% withheld. That way you don't get surprised with a tax bill later. Not sure if you can still do it mid-claim though.

•Thanks for this info! I didn't know about the withholding option. I'm going to check if I can still submit that form even though I'm already receiving benefits.

To answer your original question directly - yes, you will get a 1099G form from EDD for your pregnancy disability benefits, and yes, you do need to report them on your federal taxes (but not CA state taxes). The form will be available by January 31, 2026 for your 2025 benefits.

•Thank you for confirming! This is all new to me so I appreciate everyone's help. I'm going to look into that withholding option right away.
