Do I need to report EDD SDI benefits on my 2024 taxes? No 1099-G showing up
So confused about taxes this year! I was on disability for 3 months in 2024 (herniated disc - not fun). I'm trying to finish my taxes before the deadline, but I can't figure out if I need to report my SDI payments as income. I logged into my EDD account to look for a 1099-G form but there's nothing there. The UI Online section shows my old unemployment claim from 2023, but nothing for disability. Does EDD not send tax forms for disability? Do I even need to report it? I got about $8,750 total in SDI payments and don't want to mess up my taxes. Anyone know where to find this info or if SDI is taxable?

Yes, you need to report your California SDI benefits on your federal tax return, but generally NOT on your California state tax return. The EDD doesn't issue 1099-G forms for disability insurance because it's handled differently than unemployment. For federal taxes: You should have received a Form 1099-NEC from the EDD showing your disability benefits. If you didn't receive one, you can contact EDD to request it. Their tax hotline is almost impossible to reach though. For your California taxes: SDI benefits are usually not taxable at the state level. Keep in mind that if you contributed to SDI through payroll deductions, you may not need to pay taxes on the entire amount - only the portion that exceeds what you paid in.

•Thanks for the info! I definitely didn't get a 1099-NEC either. I don't see anything in my EDD account portal about disability tax forms. So frustrating! I've been trying to call them but you know how that goes... just constant busy signals or disconnects.

•Thanks! I'll try the number on my award letter. I'm just worried because the deadline is coming up soon, and I don't want to file without the right info.

The whole tax situation with disability is SO confusing and EDD doesn't make it any easier. I was on disability for 4 months last year and had the EXACT same problem. I called for TWO WEEKS trying to get through to someone who could tell me where to find my tax documents. EDD is the WORST when it comes to customer service!!! I finally gave up and just reported the amount from my bank statements showing the deposits. My accountant said that was fine as long as I had records of the payments. Also, I'm pretty sure disability is taxable federally but not for CA state taxes. At least that's what my tax person told me.

•That's a good idea about using my bank statements! I think I'll do that if I can't get through to EDD. At least I have records of all the deposits.

I ran into this same problem and finally found a solution that worked. If you need to speak with someone at EDD about your disability tax information, I highly recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They have a service that gets you through to an EDD agent without the endless redial cycle. I was skeptical at first, but they got me connected to an agent in about 30 minutes when I had been trying for days on my own. The agent was able to confirm exactly what I needed to report and sent me the documentation I needed. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd Once I got through, the EDD rep told me that disability benefits are generally reported on federal returns but exempt from CA state tax. They could also tell me the exact amount I received for the tax year when I couldn't find my documentation.

To clarify what everyone's saying: California SDI benefits ARE federally taxable but NOT taxable for California state income tax purposes. The EDD does not issue 1099-G forms for disability insurance payments like they do for unemployment benefits. Instead, you report your disability insurance benefits based on your payment statements or bank records. If you're using tax software, when it asks if you received state disability insurance benefits, say yes and enter the amount. The software should handle it correctly for both federal and state returns. The confusing part is that there's no official tax form, but you still need to report it on your federal return. Keep good records of what you received in case of an audit.

•Thank you for explaining this so clearly! I was getting confused with all the different answers. I'll report it on my federal return using my bank statement amounts. I might try that Claimyr service too just to confirm the exact amount with EDD before filing.

•That's not advisable. State Disability Insurance benefits are definitely reportable income for federal tax purposes. Just because you weren't caught doesn't mean it was correct. The IRS has up to 3 years to audit returns, sometimes longer.

@OP - Just wanted to follow up - did you get this sorted out? One other thing to keep in mind is that if you paid SDI taxes through your paycheck (most CA employees do), then part of your benefits aren't taxable because you already paid tax on that money. It's only the employer portion and any amount exceeding what you contributed that's federally taxable. That's another thing an EDD rep can help clarify if you can get through to one.

•I ended up using Claimyr to get through to EDD yesterday! You were right - it worked really well. The agent confirmed I need to report it on federal but not state taxes. She also gave me the exact amount I received in 2024 and explained which portion was taxable. Thanks everyone for the help!

There is a lot of misinformation in the comments. California SDI is generally NOT federally taxable. One exception is if you were receiving unemployment income and then became disabled and began receiving disability income -- in that case the income is a substitute for unemployment income and is federally taxable. This is all explained on the EDD web site. https://edd.ca.gov/en/disability/sdi_faq_for_1099g

•@Arman Bagdasaryan Thanks for sharing that link! This is really helpful - I wasn t'aware of that distinction about unemployment vs regular disability. Looking at the EDD FAQ you linked, it seems like since I went directly from working to disability herniated (disc ,)my SDI wouldn t'be federally taxable. This is completely different from what everyone else was saying! I m'glad I saw your comment before filing. I ll'read through that FAQ more carefully to make sure I understand the rules correctly.

•@Arman Bagdasaryan This is really confusing me now! I thought I had it figured out after talking to EDD, but your link is saying something completely different. I went straight from work to disability too wasn (t'on unemployment first ,)so based on what you re'saying, maybe I don t'need to report it federally at all? The EDD agent I spoke with yesterday told me it was federally taxable though. Now I m'not sure who to believe. Has anyone else dealt with this specific situation where you went directly from working to SDI without any unemployment benefits first?
