Do I receive a 1099G tax form for short-term SDI after surgery?

I was on disability for 8 weeks earlier this year following a back surgery (March-May 2025). I'm preparing for next year's taxes and wondering if I'll be receiving a 1099G form for the SDI benefits I received during that time? This was my first time ever filing for disability and I'm clueless about the tax implications. Do I need to report the SDI income on my taxes? Will EDD automatically send me the form, or do I need to request it somewhere? Any help is greatly appreciated since I don't want tax problems!

Yes, you will receive a 1099G form from EDD for your SDI benefits. They're typically mailed out by January 31st and you can also access it through your SDI Online account under 'Forms and Certificates' once it's available. SDI benefits are NOT taxable at the state level in California, but they ARE taxable on your federal tax return. Keep an eye on your mail and your SDI Online account towards the end of January 2026.

Thank you! That's super helpful. So I don't need to do anything special to request it? And is there any way to estimate how much federal tax I might owe on the SDI amount? I received about $4,800 total during those 8 weeks.

I went thru the same thing last year. The 1099g is available online usually before they mail it out. And yeah its only taxable for federal not CA state.

This is correct - but adding that if you don't receive your 1099G by early February, don't panic! You can call EDD to request one. I had to do this last year when mine never showed up. Took me 3 days of calling to finally get through to someone. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to connect with an EDD agent - totally worth it for the time saved! They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. The agent was able to resend my 1099G that same day.

You actually don't need to wait for the physical form to file your taxes. The law requires EDD to provide the form, but you can report the income even without it. I've been a tax preparer for 15 years and see this issue frequently with disability claims. You can check your SDI Online account under the "Forms and Certificates" section to view and print your 1099G form. You can also call the EDD's automated self-service line at 1-866-401-2849 to request a duplicate 1099G form if you can't access it online. For your federal taxes, the SDI income will be reported on your 1040 form in the "Other Income" section. This is important to know since SDI benefits are federally taxable but exempt from California state tax. I recommend setting aside approximately 15-25% of your benefits depending on your tax bracket to cover potential federal tax liability.

dont forget you can also choose to have federal taxes withheld from ur SDI checks when u first file the claim. I did that and it makes things soooo much easier at tax time!

I wish I'd known that! Would've been much easier. I guess I'll remember for next time, though hopefully won't need SDI again anytime soon.

Just a heads-up - I went through this exact situation in 2024 after my knee surgery. The 1099G form from EDD for SDI benefits is different from the 1099G you might receive for unemployment benefits, though they look similar. Make sure you're reporting it correctly on your federal return. Also, depending on your total income for the year, you might want to consult with a tax professional about how the SDI benefits affect your tax bracket. In my case, the additional income from SDI pushed me into a higher tax bracket for a portion of my income, which I wasn't expecting. Regarding when you'll receive it - EDD is legally required to provide 1099G forms by January 31st for the previous tax year. If you have an SDI Online account, you can typically access it there about a week or two before the paper copy arrives in the mail.

Thank you all for your helpful responses! To summarize what I've learned: 1. I will receive a 1099G form from EDD by January 31, 2026 2. It will be available in my SDI Online account, possibly before I get the mailed copy 3. SDI benefits are taxable for FEDERAL taxes, but NOT for California state taxes 4. I should plan to set aside some money for potential federal tax liability 5. Next time (hopefully there won't be one), I can choose to have taxes withheld from SDI payments This has been incredibly helpful - I had no idea about any of this! I'll keep an eye out for the form in January.

Great summary! One additional tip: If you're worried about owing taxes next year, you can make an estimated tax payment to the IRS before the end of the year to cover the potential liability from your SDI benefits. This might help avoid an underpayment penalty if your total tax due exceeds a certain threshold. The IRS has an online payment system that makes this pretty straightforward.
