Do I need a 1099G for EDD SDI maternity benefits on taxes? Will they mail it automatically?

I received State Disability Insurance (SDI) for about 3 months during maternity leave last year (June-Sept 2025). This is my first time dealing with all this tax stuff as a new mom. Am I supposed to receive a 1099G form for my taxes? My husband keeps asking if we need to report this income, but I honestly have no idea. Will EDD mail it automatically or do I need to request it somewhere? I've checked my mail obsessively but haven't seen anything from them yet. Tax deadline is coming up soon and I'm getting nervous!

SDI benefits for maternity leave are NOT taxable at the federal level, so you won't get a 1099G for those. However, if you also received Paid Family Leave (PFL) for baby bonding after your disability period, THOSE benefits ARE federally taxable and you would get a 1099G for that portion only.

Wait really?? That's a huge relief! I only received the SDI part for pregnancy/recovery, never switched to PFL because I decided to stay home longer without benefits. So if I understand correctly, I don't need to report the SDI money on our federal taxes at all?

my friend got both sdi and pfl last year and she said the 1099g only showed the pfl amount not the disability part. you should double check your edd account online they usually post the tax forms there before mailing them

Thank you! I'll check my online account. I didn't even think about looking there!

To clarify the confusion: State Disability Insurance (SDI) benefits for pregnancy are NOT subject to federal income tax, so no 1099G is issued for those payments. However, PFL (baby bonding) benefits ARE federally taxable, and EDD will issue a 1099G for those by January 31. If you only received SDI, you won't get a 1099G form at all. But remember that both SDI and PFL are subject to California state income tax - you just don't need a separate form to report them. Your W-2 from your employer should already have your SDI contributions listed. You can verify your benefit type by checking your payment history in your EDD online account.

This isn't entirely accurate. I went thru this last yr and had to report ALL benefits on my STATE taxes (both SDI & PFL), but only the PFL portion on my FEDERAL taxes. The 1099G only shows the PFL amount. But you def need to include all of it for CA taxes!!!

I had my baby in 2025 too!! I was so confused about this exact thing. Called EDD like 5 times and nobody ever answered. My tax guy ended up telling me that SDI doesn't get a 1099G because it's not federally taxable, but I still had to report it on my CA state taxes somehow. The whole system is so confusing for new moms!!!!

It really is confusing! I think I get it now - don't need to report SDI on federal but do need to for California state taxes. Did you have to call EDD to get the total amount you received in SDI benefits for your state tax return?

I tried for DAYS to reach someone at EDD about my missing 1099G last year (I had PFL, not SDI). Kept getting disconnected or waiting for hours. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to an EDD rep in 15 minutes who explained everything and resent my form. They have a demo video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 But sounds like you probably don't even need a 1099G if you only had SDI for maternity. Still worth checking your online account to confirm your benefit type.

Thanks for the suggestion! I just checked my online account and confirmed I only received SDI, so I guess I don't need the 1099G for federal taxes. I'm still a bit confused about how to report it for state taxes though. Might need to talk to someone at EDD to get the exact amount I received.

Here's the official breakdown for California maternity benefits and taxes: 1. SDI for pregnancy and recovery: NOT federally taxable, NO 1099G issued 2. PFL for baby bonding: IS federally taxable, 1099G WILL be issued 3. BOTH benefit types ARE subject to California state taxes To report SDI on your CA state tax return, you'll need to know the total benefits paid. You can find this in your EDD online account under "Claim History" or "Payment Activity." Look for payments classified as "DI" (disability insurance). The EDD website states that all tax forms are made available in your online account by January 31st, and paper forms are mailed by the same date if you haven't opted for electronic delivery.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I just checked my account and found my payment history. I received $14,328 in total SDI benefits. So I'll only need to report this on my CA state taxes, not federal. Such a relief to finally understand this!

Make SURE you're not confusing SDI with PFL!!! They're completely different programs even though they're both through EDD. When I had my baby, I got SDI for 6 weeks after birth (8 weeks for c-section), then I transitioned to PFL for baby bonding. Many moms get both! Check your paperwork carefully to see exactly which benefits you received and when.

Thanks for pointing this out. I double-checked all my documents and I definitely only received SDI. I went back to work part-time before I would have transitioned to PFL. So I'm pretty sure I only need to report this on state taxes now.

i just want to add that my taxes got rejected last year because i forgot to add my pfl to my federal return! such a headache. but you should be fine if you only got sdi

Oh no, that sounds stressful! Thanks for the warning though. I'm definitely going to double check everything before filing this year.

Just wanted to add some additional clarity since I see there's still some confusion in the thread. I work in tax preparation and deal with this situation frequently. For California SDI maternity benefits: - Federal taxes: NOT taxable, no reporting required - California state taxes: TAXABLE, must be reported as "other income" You can find your total SDI payments in your EDD online account under Payment History. The payments will show as "DI" type. For your CA state return, you'll typically report this on Schedule CA (540) Line 21 as "Other income not reported on Form 540, line 1 through 20." Since you confirmed you only received SDI (not PFL), you won't receive a 1099G form. Save yourself the stress of waiting for mail that won't come! Just grab that total from your online account and you're all set for state filing.

This is exactly what I needed to hear from someone who actually knows tax prep! Thank you so much Jacob. I was getting overwhelmed by all the different information but your explanation makes perfect sense. I'll grab my total from the online account and report it on my CA state return as other income. Really appreciate you taking the time to clarify this for new moms like me who are totally lost with all this tax stuff!

As someone who just went through this exact situation last year, I can confirm what Jacob said is spot on! I also only received SDI for maternity leave and was so confused about the tax implications. No 1099G will come because SDI isn't federally taxable, but you definitely need to report it on your California state return. One tip that saved me time - when you log into your EDD account, look for the "View Payment History" or "Claim Summary" section. It'll show all your payments with dates and amounts. I just added them all up and used that total for my CA state taxes. Super straightforward once you know where to look! Don't stress about the federal return - you're totally fine there. Just focus on getting that CA state portion right and you'll be all set. Congrats on your little one! 🍼

Thank you so much Keisha! This whole thread has been such a lifesaver. I was literally losing sleep over this tax stuff, but now I feel like I actually understand what I need to do. I found my payment history in the EDD account and you're right - it's all laid out clearly there. Just need to add up those DI payments for my CA state return and I'm good to go. It's so reassuring to hear from other moms who went through the same confusion. Thanks for the congrats too - being a new mom is overwhelming enough without tax stress on top of it! 💕

I'm going through this exact same situation right now! I received SDI benefits for about 4 months last year (April-July) for my maternity leave and have been so confused about the tax implications. Reading through all these comments has been incredibly helpful - I had no idea that SDI wasn't federally taxable but still needed to be reported on CA state taxes. I just logged into my EDD account and found my payment history like everyone suggested. It's all there under "DI" payments, so I can easily add up the total for my California state return. Such a relief to know I don't need to wait for a 1099G that's never coming! Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences, especially Jacob and Keisha for the clear explanations. This thread should be pinned for all the confused new moms dealing with this for the first time! 🙏

I'm so glad this thread helped you too Sophia! It's crazy how many of us new moms are dealing with this same confusion. I was in the exact same boat - had no clue about any of this tax stuff and was panicking about missing forms. But everyone here really broke it down perfectly. It's such a relief to know we're not alone in being totally lost about all these benefits and tax rules. Hope your filing goes smoothly! Being a new parent is hard enough without adding tax stress to the mix 😅
