Will I receive tax forms for EDD pregnancy disability and PFL baby bonding benefits? First-time mom confused about taxes

I'm a first-time mom trying to figure out this tax situation with EDD benefits. I was on pregnancy disability leave from March-May 2025, then switched to PFL baby bonding until July. My little one is 8 months now, and I'm starting to organize for tax season. Should I be expecting a tax document from EDD for these benefits? Will they send something automatically or do I need to request it? I've never received state benefits before and I'm not sure if I need to report this income or if it's considered taxable. Thanks for any help!

Yes, you should expect a Form 1099-G from EDD around late January or early February. It will show the total benefits paid to you during 2025 for both your pregnancy disability and PFL baby bonding. These benefits ARE taxable for federal taxes but exempt from California state taxes. The form should be mailed to the address EDD has on file, but you can also access it in your EDD online account under 'Tax Information' once it's available.

Thank you! Do you know if the 1099-G will separate the pregnancy disability from baby bonding amounts or just show one total? I'm trying to keep good records for our accountant.

Same!! Their website is the worst. I had to print my tax forms at the library because the download kept failing on my phone.

Just to add some details: The 1099-G will show a combined total for all EDD benefits you received, including both SDI (pregnancy disability) and PFL (baby bonding). It doesn't break them down separately. And remember - these benefits ARE federally taxable, but California doesn't tax them at the state level. Some people don't realize this and end up with a surprise federal tax bill! If you didn't have taxes withheld from your weekly benefit payments (it's optional when you apply), you might want to set aside some money for potential federal taxes owed.

Oh no, I don't think I elected to have taxes withheld! I completely forgot about that option when I was filling out all those forms. Guess I better start setting some money aside. Do you have any idea roughly what percentage I should expect to pay?

It depends on your tax bracket, but generally people should plan for about 10-22% of the benefits for federal taxes, depending on your overall income. You can check your benefit payment history in your EDD account to see the total amount you received to get an estimate of what you might owe.

I had the same thing happen with my twins in 2024! I didn't withhold taxes and got hit with a big bill. Found out the hard way that while CA doesn't tax these benefits, the federal government sure does. Would have been nice if EDD made that clearer when we applied instead of burying it in the fine print...

When I was on maternity leave my 1099G got lost in the mail and I wasted so much time trying to get through to EDD. I finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an EDD rep in like 10 minutes instead of calling for hours. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5. Saved me so much time and the rep was able to issue a new 1099G right away. Much better than listening to that hold music for 3 hours!

Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely keep this in mind if I don't receive my form. I tried calling EDD once about my initial claim and gave up after being on hold forever.

Is anyone else annoyed that we have to pay FEDERAL taxes on these benefits? Like, having a baby is expensive enough and then Uncle Sam wants a cut of the pathetic amount they give us for leave?? My pregnancy disability was only 55% of my salary and then I still had to pay taxes on THAT? The system is so broken. Meanwhile billionaires pay nothing. 🙄

Preach! And don't get me started on how California's "paid" leave still leaves so many people unable to actually take time off because the benefits are too low. My sister had to go back to work after 6 weeks because she couldn't survive on 55% of her already low income.

One more important thing - if you don't receive your 1099-G by mid-February, you can request a duplicate through your EDD online account or by calling EDD directly. Don't wait until the last minute before tax filing deadline to realize you're missing this document. Also, keep in mind that if you received more than $10 in interest from your bank or financial institutions, you'll get a 1099-INT from them as well. New parents often have a more complicated tax situation with childcare credits and dependent deductions, so it's good to gather all your documents early.

This is all so helpful - thank you! I had no idea about all these tax implications. Definitely going to start organizing everything now rather than waiting until April. And we'll be claiming the child tax credit for the first time too!

Welcome to the confusing world of EDD taxes! 😅 As a fellow new parent, I can tell you that yes, you'll definitely get that 1099-G form. Just went through this myself last year. One tip that saved me - when you get the form, double-check the amount against your benefit payment history in your EDD account. I found a small discrepancy on mine and had to get it corrected. Also, since you're a first-time parent, don't forget about the Child Tax Credit - it can help offset some of those federal taxes you'll owe on the EDD benefits. The whole system feels overwhelming at first but you've got this! And congrats on your little one! 🍼

Thank you so much for the encouragement and congratulations! ❤️ That's a great tip about double-checking the 1099-G against the payment history - I never would have thought to do that. I'm definitely feeling less overwhelmed now after reading everyone's responses. It's so helpful to hear from other parents who've been through this process. I'll make sure to look into the Child Tax Credit too. This community has been amazing!
