Do EDD PFL and SDI send tax forms? Can I get them online?

Does anyone know if California EDD sends tax forms for PFL and disability payments? I got both benefits last year (disability for pregnancy and then baby bonding PFL) and now I'm doing my taxes. Should I be looking for a 1099-G form or something? And if they do send forms, can I request/download them from my EDD online account since I never received anything in the mail? Thanks in advance!

Yes, EDD does issue 1099-G tax forms for both SDI (disability) and PFL benefits because they're considered taxable income by the federal government (but not taxable by California state). You should be able to access your 1099-G online through your UI Online account. Go to the main page, look for the 'Form 1099G' link, and select the tax year you need. If you can't find it there, you can call EDD and request they mail you a copy.

Thank you!! I'll check my UI Online account tonight. Do you know if they're usually posted by a certain date? It's already mid-February and I'm trying to file my taxes soon.

They should mail it to you automatically by late January but SURPRISE the EDD doesnt always get things right lol. I had the same problem last year and couldnt find it online either. Spent 3 days calling and couldn't get thru to anyone!!!

The 1099-Gs should always be available online by January 31st. If you don't see yours, it could mean you didn't have enough taxable benefits to receive one, or there might be an issue with your account. Check under the "1099G" tab in your UI Online account first before spending hours calling.

I just went through this! The 1099-G forms for PFL and SDI are supposed to be mailed by January 31st, but mine was definitely late. I couldn't get anyone on the phone either (kept getting disconnected after waiting forever), but I tried Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to an EDD rep in about 15 minutes. They were able to verify my address was correct and resend my form. They also helped me access it online. Quick video demo of how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5

Thanks for the suggestion! I just tried looking online again and there's nothing there, so I might need to talk to a rep. Did they charge you a lot for the service?

It was definitely worth it compared to spending days trying to get through on my own. They just connect you to EDD quickly. I asked the rep to help me access everything online so I wouldn't have to wait for mail.

Quick tip!! make sure u check both UI Online AND Benefits Programs Online separately! they have different login systems and sometimes your 1099G shows up in one but not the other (which makes NO sense). The disability/PFL stuff is usually in the Benefits Programs Online portal.

Omg that's confusing! I didn't even realize there were two different systems. I'll check both tonight. Thanks!

Just to add some important information - unlike unemployment benefits, where federal taxes are automatically withheld if you choose that option, SDI and PFL do NOT automatically withhold federal taxes. So if you didn't request withholding when you applied, you might owe taxes on those benefits now. That's why the 1099-G is important. Also, technically in California, the correct form name for disability and PFL is actually 1099-DE, not 1099-G (which is for unemployment). They serve the same purpose but have slightly different form numbers. You can request either form by calling the specific department that handled your benefit - for SDI/PFL call 1-800-480-3287.

Wait, I'm confused. I definitely didn't request any tax withholding when I applied. Does that mean I'll owe a lot now? And where do we find the 1099-DE form online?

Don't panic - how much you'll owe depends on your overall tax situation and total income for the year. The form should be available in the same section of Benefits Programs Online where you managed your SDI/PFL claim. If not there by February 15th, definitely call the number I provided to request it.

when i had my baby in 2023 i got both disability and PFL too and just did my taxes. i never got any form in the mail but my tax person said its fine becuz they report it all to the IRS anyway. she just added up all the payments from my payment history in my account to get the total. u can just look at ur payment history and see all the money they sent u and add it up

This is risky advice. While your tax preparer might be right that the information is reported to the IRS, using payment history instead of official tax documents could lead to discrepancies. The 1099-G/1099-DE forms show the exact taxable amount, which might differ from simply adding up payments. Please try to get the official form either online or by requesting it from EDD.

UPDATE: I found my form! It was in Benefits Programs Online, not UI Online. I had to go to the homepage, scroll down to Form 1099G section, then select the tax year. Thanks everyone for your help! For anyone else looking - definitely check both systems and look specifically for the Form 1099G section on the homepage.

Great! Glad you found it. Just a reminder for your tax filing: remember that while PFL and SDI benefits are subject to federal tax, they're exempt from California state tax. Make sure your tax preparer or software knows this distinction.

This is super helpful! I'm in a similar situation - got PFL last year but haven't received any tax forms yet. Just checked UI Online with no luck, so I'll definitely try Benefits Programs Online next. Thanks for sharing where you found it!

Thanks for the update Carmen! This thread was super helpful - I'm a new mom who just went through PFL for bonding leave and was totally lost about the tax forms. I had no idea there were two different EDD online systems. Just checked Benefits Programs Online and found my 1099-G there too. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences here!

This is so helpful! I'm currently on PFL for my newborn and was already stressing about tax season next year. Good to know about the Benefits Programs Online vs UI Online difference - I would have never thought to check both systems. Quick question for anyone who knows - do they send physical copies in the mail too, or is it only available online now?

@Carmen Lopez They re'supposed to mail physical copies by January 31st each year, but like many others have mentioned, EDD s'mailing can be unreliable. I d'recommend always checking online first since that s'usually more reliable than waiting for mail. If you need a physical copy for your records, you can always print the online version or request EDD to resend it. The online version has all the same information and is just as valid for tax purposes!
