EDD Form 1099-G for disability taxes - Anyone received it yet for 2024?

I was on disability for about 3 months in 2023 (May through August) due to a surgery and recovery. I'm working on filing my taxes now and realized I haven't received any tax forms from EDD. Don't they usually send out something like a W2 or 1099 form to report the disability income? This is my first time dealing with this and I'm not sure if disability benefits are even taxable in California. Has anyone gotten their tax documents from EDD yet? Should I be expecting something in the mail or do I need to download it from somewhere online?

You should receive a Form 1099-G from EDD for your disability benefits. They're typically mailed out by January 31st. SDI benefits ARE reportable for federal taxes but they're NOT taxable for California state taxes. If you haven't received it yet, you can download it directly from your SDI Online account. Just log in, go to 'Forms and Certificates' and you should be able to access your 1099-G there.

Thank you! I'll check my SDI Online account right away. I thought it might come by mail so I haven't logged in recently. Do you know if they also report this information directly to the IRS or do I need to make sure I include it on my return?

My address hasn't changed, but I'm wondering if it got lost in the mail somehow. Did your form show up in your online account too or just through mail?

I was on SDI last year too and was wondering the same thing!! Haven't gotten anything in the mail either. Getting worried because I need to file my taxes soon.

The 1099-G forms for 2023 SDI benefits should all be available online now. Here's exactly what you need to do: 1. Go to https://edd.ca.gov/ 2. Click on "Log In or Register" at the top right 3. Sign in to your Benefit Programs Online account 4. Select "SDI Online" 5. Once in your SDI account, look for the "Forms and Certificates" section 6. Select the option for tax forms/1099-G If you're having trouble accessing your account or the form isn't there, you should contact EDD directly. However, getting through to them can be extremely difficult right now due to high call volume.

I had the same issue last month and couldn't get through to EDD after trying for days. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual EDD agent in about 25 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. Once I got through, the agent was able to help me access my 1099-G and explain which parts were federally taxable. Saved me a lot of stress since my tax appointment was coming up fast.

The EDD is ALWAYS late with these forms!!! I get so frustrated every single tax season with them. Last year they claimed they sent mine but I never got it. When I finally got through to someone after HOURS of calling, they said "just download it online" like that was supposed to be obvious. The system is completely broken. And they wonder why people get so upset with them!!!!

This might sound dumb but are you sure you even need a form? My sister was on disability and said something about if you didn't have taxes taken out during your claim you don't get a form? I don't remember exactly what she said tho so maybe that's wrong.

That's actually incorrect information. You always need to report SDI income on your federal taxes regardless of whether you had taxes withheld during your claim. California SDI benefits are subject to federal taxes (but exempt from state taxes). The 1099-G is issued to everyone who received benefits and needs to be reported on your federal return.

UPDATE: Thanks everyone for the help! I was able to log into my SDI Online account and found my 1099-G form under the Forms section. For anyone else looking, it wasn't super obvious - I had to click on "View 1099G Information" and then select 2023 from a dropdown menu. The form shows the total benefits paid and confirms that no federal tax was withheld (which I now realize might make my tax bill higher than expected, ugh). Anyway, problem solved!

Great! Just a heads up for next time - you can request federal tax withholding when you first file for SDI benefits. Many people don't realize this option exists, but it can help prevent a surprise tax bill when filing season comes around.
