EDD SDI tax form 1099-G missing - Do I need it for filing taxes?
I received SDI benefits from October through December 2024 after my surgery, but I haven't gotten any tax forms yet for it. We're trying to file our taxes and have all our W-2s and other paperwork, but nothing from EDD about the disability payments. Does California send out tax forms for disability benefits? If so, what form should I be looking for and when do they typically arrive? My husband checked our mailbox and email daily but we're worried we missed it or it got lost. Our tax appointment is next week and I'm stressing out! Thanks for any help!

Yes, EDD does issue a Form 1099-G for State Disability Insurance benefits since they're generally taxable income at the federal level (but not taxable for California state taxes). They should have mailed it by January 31st, but you can also access it electronically through your EDD account. Log into UI Online, click on 'Form 1099G' on the menu, and you can view or print it there. If you can't find it online, you should call EDD right away to request a copy.

•Thank you so much! I didn't realize I could get it online. I'll check my account today. Do you know if this is something I absolutely need for filing, or could we estimate the amount based on my payment history?

•That's good to hear! Did you have any trouble accessing your online account? I haven't logged in since my claim ended.

I just went through this exact thing! The 1099-G forms were delayed for some people this year. Mine finally showed up February 19th, almost 3 weeks late. But you definitely need it - the exact amount matters for tax purposes. Your tax preparer will want the official form.

•Actually, if you can't get the 1099-G in time, you can still file your taxes using the total SDI amounts from your payment history. Just make sure the amounts match exactly what you received. The 1099-G is helpful but not absolutely required if you have accurate records of all payments received. Some tax preparers might prefer waiting for the official form though.

I had to call them EIGHT TIMES to get my form last year!!!! The EDD phone system is AWFUL and they kept disconnecting me. Total nightmare. I ended up having to file an extension because they couldn't get their act together. So frustrating when you're trying to do everything right and they make it impossible!!! 😡

•I had the same problem trying to get through to EDD about my 1099-G last month. After days of frustration, I found this service called Claimyr that got me connected to a live EDD agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending hours redialing. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. Totally worth it for me because I needed my tax forms ASAP and couldn't keep wasting time calling. The agent I spoke with was able to resend my 1099-G right away.

•There's often confusion about this. California SDI benefits ARE taxable at the federal level but NOT taxable for California state income tax. So you do need to report them on your federal tax return. If you haven't been doing this in past years, you might want to consult with a tax professional about whether you should file amended returns.

You have a few options to get your 1099-G: 1. Log into UI Online and access it electronically (fastest option) 2. Call EDD at 1-800-480-3287 to request a copy (can be difficult to get through) 3. Visit an EDD office in person with ID to request a copy 4. If your tax appointment is too soon, bring your payment history and provide the total amount - you can always amend later if needed For future reference, you can also elect to receive your tax forms electronically only, which is more reliable than mail delivery.

•This is so helpful, thank you! I didn't know visiting an office was an option. I'm going to try the online option first, and if that doesn't work, I might try to visit in person since calling sounds like a nightmare.

I'm new to this community and dealing with a similar situation right now! I was on SDI for a few months last year after an injury and just realized I need to figure out the tax situation. Reading through all these responses is really eye-opening - I had no idea SDI was taxable at the federal level. I'm definitely going to try logging into my UI Online account first to see if I can find the 1099-G there. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences, especially about the online access option. It's reassuring to know I'm not the only one who was confused about this!

•Welcome to the community! I'm glad you found this thread helpful - I was in the exact same boat when I first started dealing with SDI tax issues. The online UI Online portal really is the easiest way to get your 1099-G. Just a heads up, when you log in, sometimes it takes a few minutes for the tax documents section to load properly, so don't panic if you don't see it right away. Also, make sure you have your payment history handy just in case you need to cross-reference the amounts. Good luck with your taxes!

As someone who just went through this process, I wanted to add that if you're having trouble with UI Online, try clearing your browser cache or using a different browser. I had issues accessing my 1099-G on Chrome but it worked perfectly on Firefox. Also, if you do end up needing to call EDD, try calling right when they open at 8 AM - you'll have a much better chance of getting through. I managed to reach someone on my second try that way. Don't stress too much about your upcoming tax appointment - worst case scenario, you can file an extension if you absolutely can't get the form in time, but the online option should work for you!

•Thanks for the browser tip! I never would have thought of that. I'm definitely going to try the 8 AM calling strategy too if the online option doesn't work out. It's so helpful to get advice from people who have actually been through this process recently. I feel much more confident now that I have multiple backup plans. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences here!
