Why did I only get one 1098G for PFL but nothing for SDI benefits? Do they separate tax forms?

I'm trying to file my taxes for 2025 and I'm totally confused about the 1098G forms from EDD. I received both Paid Family Leave (PFL) benefits and regular State Disability Insurance (SDI) benefits last year, but I've only received one 1098G tax form showing the PFL payments. Shouldn't I have gotten a separate form for the disability benefits too? It's been over a month since the first form arrived. The PFL was for 8 weeks when I took care of my mom after her surgery, and the SDI was for my own medical condition for about 12 weeks later in the year. I checked my online account and can't figure out where to find the second tax form. Has anyone else experienced this? Do they combine them or send them separately?

You should have received a single 1098G that includes both your PFL and SDI benefits combined. EDD doesn't issue separate tax forms for different benefit types - they lump all taxable benefits together on one form. Check the total amount on your 1098G - it should equal the sum of both your PFL and SDI payments for the year. If the amount seems too low (only reflecting your PFL), then you might need to contact EDD to verify there wasn't an error.

Thanks for replying! I just double-checked the amount on my 1098G and you're right - it does seem to only match what I received for PFL (about $4,750). My disability payments were much more (around $12,300) since I was out longer. I'm getting worried now that there's a mistake. Has anyone else had this problem?

That's good to know! I'll keep an eye on my mail. It's just strange since the first one came over a month ago.

I had this EXACT problem last year!!! The EDD is a complete DISASTER with their tax forms. I ended up having to call them 23 TIMES before I got through to someone who could help me. Turns out they had my SDI benefits under a slightly different spelling of my name (they added an extra 'n' to my last name somehow) and that's why I didn't get the form. You NEED to call them ASAP because if you file without reporting all benefits you could get in serious trouble with the IRS.

I second this. Always better to be safe than sorry with tax stuff. The IRS does get notified of all benefits paid out.

I work with tax clients who deal with this frequently. The 1098G from EDD should indeed contain ALL taxable benefits paid to you during the calendar year, including both SDI and PFL. The fact that your form only shows the PFL amount indicates there's likely an error on EDD's end. You have three options: 1) Check your UI Online account under "Forms and Publications" - sometimes they're available electronically before paper copies arrive 2) Call EDD directly at their tax line: 1-888-745-3886 (though getting through can be challenging) 3) Request a duplicate 1098G through your online account Don't file your taxes until you resolve this discrepancy or you'll likely end up having to file an amended return.

I checked my online account and don't see the full amount reflected there either. I'll try the tax line number, but I'm worried about getting through. Do you know the best time to call?

After struggling to reach EDD about my missing 1098G form for weeks, I finally got through using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They connected me to an EDD representative in about 20 minutes instead of spending days calling repeatedly. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd The EDD agent was able to see that my second 1098G had been generated but sent to an old address. They resent it and also gave me the information over the phone so I could file my taxes without waiting. Might be worth trying if you can't get through on your own.

Thank you for the suggestion! I've been trying to call for two days now with no luck. I'll check out that service if I still can't get through by tomorrow. I'm getting anxious since I need to file my taxes soon.

Wait everyone is giving wrong info here. PFL and SDI are NOT the same program technically. PFL is administered by EDD but its technically part of the family leave program not disability. So ya its normal to get seperate forms. Just file with what u have for now and amend later if the other form shows up. Thats what my tax guy told me.

This is incorrect. While PFL and SDI are different benefit programs, they are both administered by EDD and reported on the same 1098G form. You absolutely should not file your taxes without accounting for all benefits received, as this could trigger an automated IRS notice later.

OP, I wanted to follow up - did you check if your name or SSN might have been entered differently for the two claims? I've seen cases where this happened when someone filed claims at different times of the year or used a slightly different format for their name (like including a middle initial on one form but not the other). In those cases, EDD sometimes generates separate 1098Gs because their system treats them as different individuals.

Update! I finally got through to EDD this morning after using the Claimyr service that someone mentioned above. The rep confirmed there was a mix-up in their system. Apparently when I filed my second claim for SDI, there was a typo in my SSN (one digit was wrong), so their system didn't link it to my PFL claim. They're correcting it and sending me an updated 1098G with the combined amount in 5-7 business days. They also gave me the correct total to use for my taxes now so I don't have to wait. Thanks everyone for your help!
