Will EDD send a 1099-G for PFL caregiving benefits? Tax confusion!
Quick tax question that's driving me crazy! I received PFL benefits last year when I took 6 weeks off to care for my mom after her hip surgery. It was about $4,800 total. Tax season is here and I'm organizing all my documents - will EDD be sending me a 1099-G form for these benefits? My tax preparer is asking and I can't find a straight answer anywhere. Also, are these benefits even taxable by California? I know the federal govt taxes them but not sure about state. Thanks in advance for any help!

•Thanks! Have you received yours yet? I'm wondering when they typically send them out.

Yes, you will receive a 1099-G form from EDD for your PFL benefits. They're required to send them out by January 31st, but you can also access it online through your EDD account under the 'Forms' section. The benefits are federally taxable but California doesn't tax them at the state level. I'd recommend checking your EDD online account rather than waiting for mail - sometimes they get lost or delayed.

•Thank you so much! I just logged into my EDD account and found it under Forms exactly where you said. Huge relief!

When I got PFL for my dad last summer I never got a 1099 in the mail and had to call EDD like 5 times before someone could help me. The whole thing was a nightmare lol

•I've been trying to call EDD for THREE DAYS about my missing 1099-G and can't get through to anyone!!! Just endless hold music then it hangs up on me after an hour. Has anyone found a way to actually TALK to someone at EDD without wasting your entire day??? This is beyond frustrating!!

•Try using Claimyr - it's the only way I was able to get through to EDD about my tax forms. It calls EDD for you and then connects you when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of frustration! Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5. It's how I finally got my tax situation straightened out this year.

•You need to report PFL benefits on your federal taxes since they're federally taxable income. However, they're exempt from California state taxes. If you haven't reported the benefits on your federal return, you may need to file an amendment. Check your EDD account for the 1099-G form to see the exact amount you need to report.

Just to clarify a few points about PFL and taxes since there seems to be some confusion: 1. Paid Family Leave benefits ARE federally taxable (report on federal return) 2. PFL benefits are NOT taxable by California (don't include on state return) 3. EDD is required to send 1099-G forms by January 31st 4. You can access your 1099-G online through your EDD account 5. If you received benefits but didn't report them, you should file an amended federal return Hope this helps clear things up for everyone!

When I got PFL for my mother's cancer treatments two years ago, the EDD website was showing incorrect benefit amounts on my 1099-G. It took forever to get it fixed, and I almost filed with the wrong numbers. So make sure you double-check the amounts against your payment history before filing!

•That's a great tip - I just compared my payment history with the 1099-G amounts and thankfully they match. Sorry you had to deal with that mess!
