CalWORKs payment not showing in account - will it appear after 6am?

I'm really stressed right now because my CalWORKs cash aid is supposed to hit my account today (the 3rd) but there's still nothing showing up. Usually I can see it pending at least, but there's absolutely nothing. Does anyone know if payments sometimes don't show until after 6am? I've got bills that auto-draft today and I'm worried the money won't be there in time. This hasn't happened before in the 14 months I've been receiving benefits. I called the automated line but it just says my case is active. Is the system delayed or should I be panicking?

the payments usually post overnight so check again at like 7am. mine has been coming late the past few months for some reason. used to be midnight and now its not till morning sometimes

Thank you! I'll try not to worry and check after 7am. Just strange because it's never been this way before.

There are a few things to check when your CalWORKs payment doesn't appear when expected: 1. Did you submit your most recent SAR7 form? Missing or late SAR7s can cause payment delays. 2. Check BenefitsCal to see if your case status shows active without any discontinuance notices. 3. Did you recently report changes in income that might have put you over the Income Reporting Threshold (IRT)? 4. Some banks hold deposits for a few hours, especially if the 3rd falls on a weekend or holiday. If your payment doesn't show by noon, you should definitely call your county worker directly. The payment might be delayed or there could be an issue with your account.

I did turn in my SAR7 last month and it shows active on BenefitsCal. No income changes either. I'm going to call my worker if nothing shows up by noon. Thanks for the detailed checklist!

If you've submitted everything on time and your case shows active, it's likely just a deposit timing issue. Banks sometimes have different processing schedules, especially around the beginning of the month when government benefits are issued. Most CalWORKs payments process between 2am-8am, though some can take until noon. I'd recommend checking again after 8am before getting too worried.

this is why i switched to the EBT card for my cash aid instead of direct deposit. atleast with the EBT card i know EXACTLY when the money is available without bank delays

Omg I have this EXACT same problem!! I've been on CalWORKs for 2 yrs and the money ALWAYS posts by midnight but today nothing!! I called that stupid automated line 4 times and it just keeps saying "your benefits are active" but DOESN'T tell me why no money!!! I have my rent due TODAY and my landlord is already mad from last time I was late. Did yours come through yet?? I'm going crazy refreshing my account every 5 mins!!!!

No, still nothing as of 8:30am. I'm trying to stay calm but it's hard. Will update if anything changes. Hoping we both see our payments soon!

Last month I had a similar situation - no CalWORKs payment showing when expected. Spent HOURS trying to reach someone at the county office. Kept getting disconnected or stuck on eternal hold. Finally I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual worker. They have a service that calls and waits on hold for you then connects you when a real person answers. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE that shows how it works. The worker told me there was a system delay affecting multiple recipients that day. Saved me from panicking over nothing!

does that service really work? i never heard of it before. seems kinda sketchy giving ur info to some random company just to talk to ur caseworker

It definitely worked for me. You just enter your phone number and they call you when they get a human on the line. Way better than waiting on hold for 3 hours or getting disconnected repeatedly.

this is why i hate direct deposit... the EBT card is so much better cuz you know exactly when the cash posts. with banks they hold the money sometimes and blame "processing" or whatever. i switched to just getting my calworks on the EBT card and its ALWAYS there at midnight on my payment date no matter what

I might have to switch to EBT for the cash portion if this keeps happening. I just liked having it go straight to my bank for bills.

UPDATE: My payment just posted at 10:15am! Looks like it was just delayed for some reason. Thanks everyone for helping me not panic completely. For anyone with the same issue, just keep checking throughout the morning.

MINE JUST CAME THROUGH TOO!!! What a relief!!! They should warn us when they're going to be late like this!!!

Glad to hear it worked out! For future reference, if this happens again, the county offices typically start answering phones at 8am, so you can call then rather than stressing all morning. But it's quite common for electronic deposits to have timing variations, especially at the beginning of the month when systems are processing millions of benefit payments simultaneously.

This happens all the time with welfare. They never tell you when they change stuff. My CalFresh is the same way, supposed to come on the 10th but sometimes doesn't show up till way later in the day. Its bs cause they expect us to turn in every form exactly on time but then they can be late with our money whenever they want.

ya i had that happen with my calworks before and missed my rent payment and got hit with a $50 late fee but when i asked the county to pay it they said it wasnt there fault lol ok

Just a helpful tip for the future - if you're relying on CalWORKs for time-sensitive payments like rent or utilities, it's good practice to budget assuming the funds might arrive a day later than scheduled. While benefits are generally consistent, banking systems, holidays, and county processing can occasionally cause delays. I'm glad your payment came through today!

That's good advice. I usually have a small buffer but had some unexpected expenses last month that wiped it out. Going to work on building that buffer back up!

I've been on CalWORKs for about 8 months now and this exact thing happened to me twice. The first time I was absolutely panicking like you were, calling everyone and checking my account every few minutes. Turns out it was just a processing delay on the county's end - something about their payment system being updated. The second time I stayed calm and sure enough, it showed up around 9:30am. What I learned is that if your case shows active on BenefitsCal and you've submitted all your paperwork on time, it's almost always just a timing issue. The county processes thousands of payments and sometimes there are delays. I keep a small emergency fund now (even just $20-30 when possible) specifically for situations like this where bills might auto-draft before the payment hits. Glad yours came through! It's such a relief when you see that deposit finally appear.

This is really helpful advice, thank you! I'm definitely going to start building up that small emergency buffer you mentioned. Even $20-30 would have saved me so much stress this morning. It's crazy how much anxiety these payment delays can cause when you're living paycheck to paycheck. I'm new to the community but it's reassuring to know others have been through the same thing and that it usually works out. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Welcome to the community! I'm glad everything worked out for you and your payment came through. This kind of stress is so real when you're depending on these benefits for essential expenses. One thing I've learned from being in this community is that payment delays, while scary, are usually temporary system issues rather than problems with your case. The county systems get overwhelmed at the beginning of each month processing everyone's payments at once. For anyone else reading this who might face the same situation - if your case shows active on BenefitsCal and you've submitted all required forms, try to stay calm and check again every few hours rather than every few minutes. The constant refreshing just makes the anxiety worse (trust me, I've been there). Most delayed payments show up by noon on the payment date. Thanks for updating us that your payment came through - it helps other community members know that these delays usually resolve themselves!

Same for me in Santa Cruz county

It seems like this was a widespread issue across different counties then! I'm in a different county but had the exact same problem - payment was supposed to hit today but didn't show until around 10:15am. Must have been some kind of statewide system delay or processing issue. At least we know it wasn't just our individual cases having problems. Hope yours came through too!

This thread is so helpful to read! I'm fairly new to CalWORKs (started receiving benefits about 4 months ago) and I had no idea that payment delays like this were somewhat normal. Reading everyone's experiences makes me feel less alone in dealing with the stress of depending on these benefits. The suggestion about keeping a small emergency buffer even if it's just $20-30 is really smart. I've been living payment to payment and situations like this would definitely cause me to panic. It's also good to know that if your case shows active on BenefitsCal and you've submitted everything on time, it's usually just a processing delay rather than a real problem with your case. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and advice - this community seems really supportive!

Welcome to the community! You're definitely not alone in this - I think most of us have experienced that heart-dropping moment when the payment doesn't show up when expected. I'm still pretty new myself (been receiving benefits for about a year) but I've learned so much from reading posts like this one. The emergency buffer advice is gold - even having just a little bit set aside makes such a huge difference for peace of mind. This community has been a lifesaver for getting real advice from people who actually understand what we're going through. Glad you found this thread helpful!

I'm so glad I found this thread! I'm new to both CalWORKs and this community (just started receiving benefits last month) and reading about everyone's similar experiences with payment delays is really reassuring. When I saw Jamal's original post, I was thinking "oh no, what if this happens to me?" but seeing how it all worked out and reading everyone's advice about staying calm and checking throughout the morning instead of panicking really helps. The tip about building even a small emergency buffer of $20-30 is something I'm definitely going to work on. I can see how that would save so much stress in situations like this. It's also helpful to know that if your case shows active on BenefitsCal and you've submitted everything on time, delays are usually just processing issues rather than actual problems with your case. Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences and creating such a supportive space for people navigating these systems!

Welcome to the community! I'm also pretty new here (just joined a few weeks ago) and I've already learned so much from reading posts like this one. The payment delay situation is definitely something that seems to happen more often than you'd expect - I had no idea before finding this community that it was such a common experience. What really helped me was seeing how supportive everyone is here. People share real, practical advice based on their actual experiences rather than just generic information. The emergency buffer tip that keeps getting mentioned is something I'm working on too - even knowing that $20-30 could prevent that panic feeling makes it feel like a manageable goal. I'm glad you found this thread helpful! It's reassuring to know there are others who understand the stress of depending on these benefits and are willing to share what they've learned.

I'm so relieved I found this thread and this community! I just started receiving CalWORKs benefits two weeks ago and I had no idea that payment delays like this were something that could happen. Reading through everyone's experiences and seeing how supportive you all are really puts my mind at ease about what to expect. The advice about keeping a small emergency buffer is something I'm definitely going to prioritize, even if it's just $10-20 to start with. I can see how much stress and panic that could prevent in situations like what Jamal went through this morning. It's also really helpful to know the signs that it's just a processing delay (active case status, paperwork submitted on time) versus something more serious. Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences and practical tips. As someone brand new to navigating these systems, having a community where people actually understand what it's like to depend on these benefits is incredibly valuable. I'm glad everything worked out for everyone who was dealing with delays today!

I'm relatively new myself (been here about a month) and I've already learned so much from reading posts like this one. The payment delay situation really opened my eyes to how common these issues are - before joining this community, I thought any delay meant something was seriously wrong with my case. The emergency buffer advice that keeps coming up is so practical. Even starting with $10-20 like you mentioned makes a huge difference. I've been working on building mine up slowly and it's already given me more peace of mind knowing I have even a tiny cushion for situations like this. What I love about this community is how people share real experiences and practical solutions rather than just generic advice. Everyone here truly understands the stress of living on these benefits and the anxiety that comes with any disruption to the routine. What really stands out to me is how supportive everyone is here and how willing people are to share their real experiences. The practical advice about building even a small emergency buffer of $20-30, checking BenefitsCal for active case status, and knowing that most delays resolve by noon on the payment date is exactly the kind of information I need as someone new to navigating this system. I'm really new to this community and just got approved for CalWORKs about 3 weeks ago, so I'm still learning how everything works.
