CalWORKs benefits showing 'pending' past normal deposit date - anyone else?

I'm freaking out a little because my CalWORKs payment is still showing as 'pending' on BenefitsCal! It's usually deposited a week before the 2nd of each month like clockwork, but nothing's happened yet. I've got rent due in 3 days and my landlord is NOT understanding about late payments (already threatened eviction last year when county messed up my paperwork). Did anyone else's Cash Aid get delayed this month? I checked my SAR7 submission history and everything was on time. No income changes to report. Nothing should be different! Could this be because I started that part-time job last month? I reported it right away and my worker said it wouldn't affect this month's benefits. Starting to panic...

Did yours usually post by now too? I'm worried because I've never seen it stay pending this long before.

This happened system-wide back in November too. The county's payment processing system had some technical issues that delayed deposits by 3-4 days for everyone. It's likely the same situation now. The funds should still post, but you might want to call your worker to confirm there aren't any issues specific to your case. Since you mentioned starting a part-time job, they might be recalculating your grant amount if your income exceeded the Income Reporting Threshold (IRT).

Thanks for that info! I've been trying to call all morning but can't get through - just the automated system telling me all agents are busy. My income definitely didn't hit the IRT, I only worked like 10 hours a week. Really hoping it's just a system delay like you said.

oh girl CALL THEM RIGHT NOW!!! when mine went pending last year it was bc they needed some stupid verification and never told me!! ended up losing my cash aid for 2 months while i fought to get it back. dont wait!!!

That's exactly what I'm afraid of!! Did they at least backpay you for those 2 months? I've been calling but can't get through to anyone... just holds and disconnections.

I had this exact issue this month. Mine is pending too. Talked to my neighbor who also gets CalWORKs and hers is pending as well. I think there's something going on with the entire system right now. My worker finally responded to my message yesterday and said there's processing delays for February payments affecting "many recipients" but that they should all be deposited by the 4th. Not helpful when rent is due on the 1st though! 😡

That's actually really helpful to know it's not just me! The 4th is better than nothing but you're right, rent is due before then. Did your worker say anything about why there's a delay?

Just something about a "system update causing processing delays" - typical government excuse lol. I'm calling my landlord to explain the situation. Showing him the proof that benefits are pending might help him be patient for a few more days.

Have you tried using Claimyr to get through to your caseworker? I was in the same boat last month with a pending payment issue and couldn't get through after trying for days. A friend recommended this service at claimyr.com and it got me connected to a real person at the CalWORKs office in under 20 minutes. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE When I finally got through, turned out there was a flag on my account because they thought I missed an appointment (I didn't). The worker fixed it on the spot and my payment processed that night. Might be worth trying since you've got rent coming up so soon.

Thank you!! I'm desperate at this point so I'll try anything. Just checked again and still pending. I'll look into Claimyr and see if I can finally get some answers.

I've worked with several CalWORKs recipients experiencing this same issue this month. Here's what I can tell you: 1. There is a confirmed systemwide delay affecting most recipients for February payments 2. The county is prioritizing processing households with rent due on the 1st 3. If you started a job last month, they ARE required to calculate how it affects your grant, but that shouldn't delay your payment unless: - You didn't submit paystubs they requested - Your income was close to the IRT (Income Reporting Threshold) - You missed a Welfare to Work appointment related to your new employment Your best action is to contact your worker directly and request an expedited payment due to your rent situation. If you can't reach them, ask to speak with a supervisor and explain the hardship this delay is causing. Document everything! Also, if your landlord threatens eviction over a few days' delay that's caused by the county, remind them that CalWORKs recipients have certain protections. Get any threats in writing and contact legal aid if needed.

This is incredibly helpful information - thank you! I got all my paystubs in and my income was nowhere near the IRT. I also didn't miss any WTW appointments. So it sounds like it's just the system delay affecting everyone. I'll keep trying to reach my worker to see if they can expedite given my rent situation.

omg the exact same thing is happening to me!!! i was about to post asking about this too. mine always comes on the 25th and its the 29th now and NOTHING. called the EBT number and they just say "pending authorization" whatever that means. my bills are all due and im freaking OUTTTTT

"Pending authorization" usually means the county has approved the payment but it hasn't been processed by the state payment system yet. This is definitely confirming there's a systemic delay rather than individual case issues. It should resolve in the next few days, but that doesn't help with immediate bills. If you're facing utility disconnection or eviction, ask your worker about the Emergency Assistance Fund.

my sister works for the county (not calworks tho) and she said they did upgrade their whole computer system last weekend and its causing ALL KINDS of problems across different benefit programs. she said they're working overtime trying to fix everything!!

That would explain it! Thanks for the insider info! Really wish they'd sent out a notice about this instead of leaving everyone panicking.
