CalWORKs benefits not showing as pending for April 1st - third month in a row having to visit TAD office
I'm so frustrated right now. Just checked my BenefitsCal account and my CalWORKs Cash Aid isn't showing as pending for April 1st. Again. This is the third month in a row this has happened! Every month I end up having to drag my two kids to the TAD office and wait for hours just to get my benefits released. Last month the worker said it was a 'system issue' that would be fixed, but clearly that was BS. My rent is due on the 5th and I literally cannot be late again or face eviction. Has anyone else been dealing with this recurring issue? Is there something wrong with my case that's causing this to happen every month? I've submitted my SAR7 on time and haven't had any income changes. Just tired of this monthly stress when I'm doing everything right!

•That's exactly what I'm dealing with! They keep blaming it on different things each time. First it was 'verification issues' (but I submitted everything), then it was 'system maintenance' and now they're saying there's nothing wrong showing in my case notes. How are you dealing with it? Are you having to physically go in each month too?

This is unfortunately becoming a common problem with the new BenefitsCal system integration. There are two possible issues that could be causing this: 1. Your case might be flagged for an Income Reporting Threshold (IRT) review each month, even if you haven't had income changes. Ask specifically if your case has an 'auto-verification' flag on it. 2. Some counties are experiencing batch processing delays with the new system, where benefits that should automatically load are getting stuck in a verification queue. Request to speak with a supervisor next time you're at the TAD office. Ask them to check if there's a recurring authorization hold on your case. They can place a permanent note that should prevent this from happening again.

•Thank you for this detailed information! I've never heard of an 'auto-verification flag' but that makes sense. My worker never mentions these specific technical details. I'll definitely ask about this and request a supervisor. Do you happen to know if this is something I can resolve over the phone or do I really need to keep going in person?

U should call the ACCESS line instead of going in. Thats what i do. Still takes forever but better than dragging kids to TAD office.

•I've tried calling so many times! Either I get disconnected after waiting for an hour or they tell me they need to 'research the issue' and will call back, but never do. It's so frustrating. How long do you usually wait on the phone before someone picks up?

Have you checked if you hit your IRT (Income Reporting Threshold)? Even if your income didn't change, if it's over your IRT you need to report it. This happened to me when I worked an extra shift at my job and went $42 over my IRT but didn't report it because I didn't think it mattered. My benefits didn't post for like 3 months after that until they fixed it.

•I haven't had any income at all the past few months, so definitely not over the IRT. But I appreciate the suggestion - maybe someone else reading this will find it helpful!

This is a known issue in several counties right now. I work with CalWORKs recipients as part of my job, and we've seen this happen to many clients since they updated the system in January 2025. Here's what you need to do: 1. Ask for a "Case Status Verification Letter" each time you go in. This creates a paper trail. 2. Request they add a "Priority Authorization Flag" to your case (most workers know what this is). 3. If they say they can't do #2, ask specifically for a "System Override Authorization" which requires supervisor approval but will force your benefits to release on time. Also, your benefits should be available by the 1st or 3rd working day of the month according to regulations. If they're consistently late, you can file for a state hearing, which often resolves these issues quickly.

•This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I've never heard of these specific terms before. I'm writing all this down to take with me. Do you know if there's a specific form I should ask for to request the Priority Authorization Flag? And how do I go about filing for a state hearing if needed?

After dealing with this exact problem for 5 months straight, I finally got it resolved last week. I was so tired of not being able to reach anyone on the phone - would wait 2+ hours just to get disconnected or told to call back. I ended up using this service called Claimyr that got me through to a real person at the CalWORKs office in minutes. They basically call for you and when they reach a human, they connect you. I was skeptical but desperate, and it actually worked! Got my issue resolved in one call and my benefits are showing as pending for April 1st for the first time in months. You can see how it works at claimyr.com or check their demo at https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE

•It worked for me! They don't talk to the worker for you - they just get you past the hold time. Then you talk directly to the county worker yourself. Made a huge difference in getting my issue fixed instead of having to keep going in person.

I BET THEY'RE DOING THIS ON PURPOSE!!! They hope people will give up and not get their benefits. I had this happen for 4 months and complained to my state rep's office and MAGICALLY my benefits started working again. CALL YOUR STATE ASSEMBLYPERSON!! The county offices hate when you do that because they get in trouble lol

•I never thought of contacting my state rep! Did you just call their local office? I'm willing to try anything at this point because I can't keep missing work to sit at the TAD office every month.

Quick update on this issue: I just spoke with a program specialist at one of the larger counties this morning. They confirmed this is a known system issue affecting approximately 15% of cases, primarily those that had any kind of special coding or mid-period adjustments in the past 6 months. They're implementing a fix in the next system update (scheduled for April 15, 2025), but until then, the fastest resolution is to: 1. Have your worker add a "monthly manual authorization" note to your case 2. Request a supervisor review of your Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) issuance schedule 3. Ask them to document in the case notes that this is a recurring system issue, not a compliance or eligibility problem This documentation protects you from any future questions about these delays and ensures you won't be penalized for a system error.

•Thank you SO MUCH for this update! I had a mid-period adjustment in December when my youngest started childcare, so that probably explains why I'm affected. I'll specifically ask for these three things when I go in tomorrow. Really grateful for this information!

my friend said some counties r giving emergency benefits if u have a urgent need like rent due so maybe ask about that too

•This is correct. You can request an "Immediate Need" payment if you're facing eviction or utility shut-off due to delayed benefits. This is different from the regular homeless assistance and is specifically for administrative delays. The worker needs to process this the same day you request it if you have documentation of the urgent need (like an eviction notice).
