CalWORKs Cash Aid didn't arrive today but CalFresh loaded - worker said nothing would change?

I'm freaking out right now. My CalWORKs money ALWAYS hits my EBT card on the 1st, but there's absolutely nothing there today. I literally just spoke with my eligibility worker last Monday and specifically asked if there were any changes coming to my benefits. She told me everything was fine and my case was stable! My CalFresh benefits are showing they'll load on the 9th like normal, so why would just my Cash Aid disappear? I have rent due TODAY and was counting on that money. I've tried calling the county office for the past 2 hours but keep getting the "all representatives are busy" message and then it hangs up. Has this happened to anyone else recently? Could it be a system glitch? I haven't received any discontinuance notices or reduction letters in the mail. I turned in my SAR7 on time last month, and nothing in my situation has changed at all.

same thing happened to me in march!! cash aid just vanished even tho i had talked to worker week before. turned out my income went over IRT (income reporting threshold) from a job i had started but i didnt think i needed to report it till my sar7. they cut me off with no notice!! CALL THEM ASAP!!!

But I haven't started any new job! My income is exactly the same as it's been for months. I'm still within the guidelines. Did they send you any notice before they stopped your benefits?

This could be happening for several reasons: 1. It might be a payment processing delay. Sometimes the funds can be delayed by 1-2 business days, especially around holidays or month beginnings. 2. Check if you missed any required Welfare to Work (WTW) appointments or activities. Missing WTW requirements can trigger an immediate hold on your Cash Aid. 3. Review your BenefitsCal account to see if there are any notices or actions requiring your attention that might have been missed. 4. Verify if your semi-annual report (SAR7) was fully processed. Sometimes they receive it but need additional verification for something you reported. I recommend trying to reach your worker first thing tomorrow morning. Be persistent - sometimes you need to call right when they open at 8:00 AM to get through.

I've never had a delay before - it's always been reliable on the 1st! I'm in the WTW exemption program because I have a child under 24 months, and my youngest is only 14 months old. My SAR7 was processed because the worker literally told me last week everything was good to go. I'll try calling again tomorrow morning, but I don't know what I'm going to do about my rent today 😰

im so sorry ur dealing with this!! the county is always doing this kind of stuff without warning... have u checked ur mail carefully? sometimes they send notices that look like junk mail and u might have missed something important. also did u miss any appointments? they cut me off once for missing a phone interview i didnt even know about!!

I haven't gotten ANYTHING in the mail about changes or appointments! I keep all my CalWORKs paperwork in a special folder and check my mail every day. And I just had my redetermination interview like 2 months ago, so I shouldn't have another one scheduled yet.

If you need to reach a CalWORKs worker today about your missing Cash Aid, I'd recommend trying Claimyr. I was in a similar situation last month with my benefits suddenly stopping, and I couldn't get through on the county phone lines for days. Claimyr got me connected to a live worker in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying for hours on my own. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE and their website is claimyr.com. Literally saved me from getting an eviction notice because I was able to get my benefits fixed that day.

Yes! It saved me so much time and stress. They basically call for you and navigate all the automated systems, then call you back when they have a live person on the line. Way better than getting hung up on repeatedly or waiting on hold for 3+ hours.

This is a fairly common issue that happens when there's a "glitch" in their system - and by glitch I mean they messed something up but won't admit it. There are several things that could be happening: 1. PAYMENT HOLD: They might have put a temporary hold on your payment due to a "system flag" that needs to be cleared by a worker. This happens ALL THE TIME with no notice. 2. VERIFICATION ISSUE: Even though you submitted your SAR7, sometimes one piece of information gets flagged for additional verification. 3. SYSTEM ERROR: Sometimes the EBT system just fails to process payments correctly. I've seen cases where the money appears a day or two late with no explanation. 4. CHILD SUPPORT FLAG: If there's any child support case connected to your CalWORKs, sometimes these systems don't communicate properly and it triggers a hold. KEEP CALLING. Document everything. If you get this resolved and it was their error, ask for a CIVIL RIGHTS COMPLAINT FORM. The county is required by law to issue benefits on time if you've met all requirements. When they fail to do so and it causes financial hardship, you have rights.

Thank you for all this info! I don't have any child support case connected to my benefits, so it's not that. I'll definitely ask for that Civil Rights Complaint Form if it turns out to be their mistake. Do you know if they can issue emergency payments if it's their error? I really can't wait days for this to be fixed.

Yes, they can issue emergency payments! If you get through to a worker and they confirm it was their error, specifically ask for an "immediate need payment" or "emergency payment authorization." They can load funds to your EBT card the same day in many counties. Don't let them tell you it has to wait for the regular processing cycle - that's not true when it's their error that caused the hardship.

When was your last redetermination interview? If it was exactly 12 months ago, they might have automatically closed your case for annual redetermination even though you completed your SAR7. The annual renewal (SAWS 2) and the SAR7 are different forms. Some workers don't explain this clearly. Also, did you get any mail from them about Income Reporting Threshold (IRT)? They're required to send a notice if they discontinue you for going over IRT.

My redetermination was in March, so I should be good until next March. I haven't received anything about IRT and my income hasn't changed at all. I'm so confused why this is happening! 😭

just letting you know don't panick yet!!! sometimes the cash aid is delayed especially on the begining of the month and around holidays. i had mine come a day late last month for no reason they said it was just slow processing. check again tomorrow, it might show up! if not then definitely worry lol 😂

I hope you're right! But my landlord isn't going to accept "the county had slow processing" as an excuse for late rent. I've had CalWORKs for 3 years and it's never been late before, so this is really stressing me out.

UPDATE: I just got through to a supervisor at my county office. There's currently a system-wide issue affecting some CalWORKs payments in several counties. They're aware of the problem and are working to resolve it. Payments should be processed within 24-48 hours. If you're experiencing a financial emergency because of this delay, ask specifically for an "Emergency Payment Request" - supervisors have the authority to issue these even when the system is down. Hope this helps those in the same situation!

THANK YOU for this update!!! I'm going to call first thing tomorrow and ask for that Emergency Payment Request. My landlord is already texting me about the rent being late. Did they say what caused the system issue?

They didn't give specific details, but the supervisor mentioned it was related to the monthly batch processing at the state level. Apparently, some cases got caught in what they called a "verification loop" where the system was waiting for confirmation that wasn't actually needed. Be sure to mention you have an urgent need (rent due) when you request the emergency payment.

I'm so sorry you're going through this stress! The same thing happened to my neighbor last month - her CalWORKs cash aid just didn't show up on the 1st with no warning. She was panicking about rent too. After hours of calling, she found out it was a "system verification hold" that required a supervisor to manually release. The county worker couldn't even explain why it happened, just said sometimes the computer flags cases randomly. She got her money 3 days later but had to borrow from family to avoid late fees. Definitely keep calling and ask to speak to a supervisor immediately - don't let them put you off. Document the time and date of every call attempt in case you need to file a complaint later. Hoping yours gets resolved faster than hers did!

Thank you for sharing your neighbor's experience! It's both reassuring and frustrating to know this happens to other people too. I'm definitely going to push to speak with a supervisor tomorrow morning and I'll make sure to document everything like you suggested. Did your neighbor have to pay any late fees on her rent, or was her landlord understanding about the county's mistake? I'm hoping mine will be reasonable if I can show it's not my fault.
