Won my ESD appeal after 3 months - how long until I get my back payments?
Just finally won my unemployment appeal on January 28th after ESD initially denied me back on November 1st. Feeling relieved but still stressing about money. Has anyone been through this before? The judge at the hearing ruled in my favor, but my eServices account still shows the same status and I haven't received ANY payments yet. Do I need to call someone or will they automatically process my backpay? And how long does it usually take for the money to hit my account after winning an appeal? I'm getting really anxious since I've been without income for months waiting for this!

Congrats on winning! ESD is notoriously slow with paying after appeals. My sister went through something similar in 2023 and it took about 3-4 weeks AFTER the appeal decision before she saw any money. The system doesnt update right away and sometimes they need to manually process it. You should defintiely call them if you can get through!!!

3-4 weeks??? That's so frustrating! I was hoping it would be faster since they already owe me for 3 months. Do you know if they pay it all at once or week by week?

they make you wait forever then expect you to file weekly claims on time smh

I know, right? The double standard is ridiculous. I've been filing every week even though I wasn't getting paid, just like they told me to.

It typically takes 7-10 business days for ESD to process an appeal decision, but it can take longer depending on their workload. What's important is to make sure you've been filing your weekly claims this entire time. If you haven't been filing weekly, you won't get paid for those weeks even if you won your appeal.\n\nHere's what you should do now:\n1. Check that your payment method is properly set up in eServices (direct deposit or debit card)\n2. Continue filing weekly claims if you're still unemployed\n3. If nothing changes in your account after 10 business days, contact ESD\n\nWhen the payments do come, they'll typically arrive as a lump sum for all back weeks you properly claimed.

Thank you! Yes, I've been diligently filing every week even without getting paid. My direct deposit is set up correctly too. I guess I'll wait until February 10th (that would be about 10 business days) and then try to contact them if nothing changes.

I second this! The same thing happened to me last year. The ESD systems don't always automatically update after an appeal decision. You absolutely need to call, but getting through is nearly impossible these days.\n\nI wasted two weeks trying before I found a service called Claimyr that got me connected to an ESD agent in under 10 minutes. Cost a bit but totally worth it when I was desperate to get my benefits flowing. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3\n\nOtherwise you might be waiting on hold forever or getting hung up on by their automated system.

I've been trying to call but it's impossible to get through! Always says high call volume and hangs up. Might try that service you mentioned if I don't see movement soon. Does anyone know if the appeal decision also affects the waiting week? I never got paid for that either.

The system is RIGGED against us!!! I won my appeal too and they still found a way to deny me on a technicality later. Don't count your money yet, they will find ANY excuse not to pay you what they owe. The whole ESD department needs to be investigated!!!

This isn't helpful and it's not accurate. If you've received a favorable decision from the Office of Administrative Hearings (OAH), ESD is legally required to implement that decision. If they later disqualified you, it was likely for a separate issue or for weeks after the appeal period.\n\nTo the original poster: appeal decisions are binding on ESD. They cannot overturn what the judge decided. However, they do take time to process. The delay is administrative, not because they're looking for ways to deny you.

Whatever. You probably work for them. I'm just saying what ACTUALLY happened to me. They found \

The judge told me at the end of the hearing that they were ruling in my favor, but said I'd get the official written decision in the mail within a week. Haven't received that yet either.

To clarify what others have said: After an appeal decision, ESD must do several things:\n\n1. Receive the official decision from OAH (takes 2-5 days)\n2. Process the decision in their system (3-7 days)\n3. Review any weeks claimed during the appeal period (1-3 days)\n4. Issue payments (1-3 days after processing)\n\nSo realistically, you're looking at 7-18 days from decision date if everything goes smoothly. However, ESD is experiencing unusually high volumes in 2025 as they implement their new system, so delays are common.\n\nIf you don't see an update by February 15th, I would definitely contact them. And yes, if your appeal covered your waiting week as well, that should be paid as part of your back benefits.

Thank you for breaking it down like this! This is really helpful. I appreciate knowing what stages the process goes through. Keeping my fingers crossed it all goes smoothly, but at least now I have a realistic timeline to expect.

Just wondering, what was your denial reason initially? I got denied for \

Mine was also a voluntary quit situation! They said I left without good cause, but I had documentation showing unsafe working conditions that my employer refused to address. The judge agreed that I had valid safety concerns that constituted good cause. If you have any evidence at all for why you had to resign, definitely appeal!
