Won my ESD appeal hearing - how long until I receive my backpay?

Just had my ESD appeal hearing last week (took almost 2 months to get scheduled!) and yesterday got the decision letter saying I won! The judge agreed that my employer terminated me without valid cause and I'm eligible for benefits. While I'm super relieved, I'm also getting anxious about when I'll actually see the money. It's been 12 weeks of filing claims with $0 payments while 'disqualified' status. The backpay amount should be around $9,200 total. Has anyone else won an appeal? How long did it take for ESD to process your backpay after the decision? Do I need to contact them or will it happen automatically? My rent is already late this month and my landlord's patience is wearing thin...

Congrats on winning your appeal! In my experience (won my appeal back in February), it took about 10-14 days for the payments to start processing. I didn't have to do anything - they just started showing as 'paid' in my eServices account. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims like normal while you wait. If you don't see movement within 2 weeks, then I'd suggest calling ESD to check on the status. Just be prepared to wait on hold FOREVER.

Thanks for sharing your experience! This gives me a little hope. Did you get all your backpay at once or did they release it in chunks? I'm just wondering if I should expect the full $9200 or if they might split it up.

I won an appeal in January 2025 and it was a bit of a mixed bag. The letter said I won, but then my online account still showed disqualified for about 3 more weeks. I ended up having to call ESD multiple times before someone actually updated my claim status. Once they did that, I got my backpay in two separate deposits about 3 days apart. The whole process took almost a month from winning the appeal to money in my account. Make sure to check your eServices account daily and screenshot everything! ESD makes mistakes and it helps to have documentation.

omg this is so typical of them!!! i swear they INTENTIONALLY make things difficult. I had FIVE different agents tell me FIVE different things when I was going through my appeal last year. its like they WANT people to give up!!

If you need to reach ESD faster to check on your backpay status, I highly recommend using Claimyr. I was in a similar situation after winning my appeal and couldn't get through to ESD for days. Claimyr got me connected to an actual ESD agent in less than 30 minutes instead of spending hours redialing. Their service helped me resolve a processing delay with my backpay. You can see a video of how it works at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Their website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out.

Thanks for the tip! If I don't see any progress by the end of the week, I might try this. Did the ESD agent you spoke with have the authority to actually fix/process your payments or did they just give you information?

The agent I reached was able to see that my appeal decision hadn't been properly entered into their system. They put in some kind of manual update and my payments started processing about 2 days later. They can't promise immediate payment, but at least you'll know what's happening instead of being left in the dark.

Listen, don't leave this to chance. Their "automatic" system is NOT reliable. I won my appeal back in November and nothing happened for 3 weeks. I finally got someone on the phone who told me there was a "system flag" that needed to be removed manually. So yea, you probably DO need to contact them. Another thing - check if your weekly claims during the appeal period show as "processing" or still as "disqualified" in your eServices account. If they still say disqualified, definitely call.

Just checked and they all still show as disqualified. Ughhh, why can't anything be simple with ESD? I've been homeless before and really can't risk losing my apartment over this delay.

Yep, that's a red flag. You need to call them ASAP. Be prepared to reference your OAH case number and the date of the decision. And document EVERYTHING - who you talk to, date/time, what they tell you. I learned the hard way that you might need to call multiple times to get someone who actually knows what they're doing.

My brother just went through this. Important thing to know: after appeal decisions, ESD has to MANUALLY update your claim. It's not automatic! The OAH (Office of Administrative Hearings) sends the decision to ESD, but ESD has to do something in their system. He called the special collections unit at 360-486-5817 (different than regular ESD) and that helped speed things up. Got his backpay about 10 days after calling. Good luck!

Thank you so much for that specific number! I'll try calling them tomorrow morning. I had no idea there was a special unit for this - ESD's website is so confusing about what to do after winning an appeal.

This happens when they don't properly code all your weeks in their system. Ask specifically for a "weekly claim specialist" when you call. Regular agents often don't have access to fix these specific issues. And make sure you have documentation showing exactly which weeks you're missing.

One thing no one's mentioned yet - make sure your payment method is set up correctly in eServices. I've seen people win appeals, then their backpay was sent to an old debit card or closed bank account. Double-check your payment settings while you're waiting!

That's a great point - just checked and my direct deposit info is current. At least that part should be okay! Now I just need to get them to actually process the payments...

UPDATE: I just received my first backpay deposit! $4,600 hit my account this morning - exactly 11 days after getting the appeal decision. Called yesterday using that special collections number that someone suggested, and apparently that did the trick. The agent said the remaining amount should come through within 72 hours. Thanks everyone for your help with this!
