Why doesn't Washington ESD unemployment answer the phone - getting desperate
I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for over two weeks about my claim that's been stuck in adjudication. I call the main number at 8am sharp every day and either get a busy signal or sit on hold for 3+ hours before getting disconnected. Yesterday I tried calling 47 times throughout the day - not exaggerating, I kept a tally. I need to speak to someone about missing wage information on my claim but there's literally no way to get through. Has anyone actually gotten through to a real person recently? This is insane - how can a government agency just not answer their phones when people desperately need help?

Same boat here, been calling for a month about my job search requirements. The phone system is a complete joke.

•A MONTH?? That's terrifying. What happens if they just never answer?

•The phone volume is insane right now. Best times are usually Tuesday/Wednesday mornings right at 8am, but even then it's hit or miss.

Washington ESD gets thousands of calls daily and they're understaffed. The adjudication backlog means more people calling about delayed claims. Try using the callback feature on their website if available, or submit questions through SecureAccess Washington.

•I've tried the online messaging but haven't heard back in 10 days. How long do they usually take to respond?

Zainab Khalil
•Online responses can take 2-3 weeks unfortunately. Phone is still fastest if you can get through.

This might sound weird but I actually found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD when I was having the same problem. They basically handle the calling and waiting for you - I was skeptical at first but it actually worked. Check out claimyr.com, they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that explains how it works.

•Wait is this legit? Sounds too good to be true honestly.

•I was skeptical too but I was desperate. They got me connected to someone at Washington ESD within a day and I finally got my claim issue resolved.

•How much does something like that cost though?

THE PHONE SYSTEM IS BROKEN ON PURPOSE!! They don't want to help us, they want us to give up and stop calling. It's all about saving money by not hiring enough staff.

Miguel Ortiz
•I don't think it's intentional, they're just overwhelmed. The system wasn't designed for this volume.

•Overwhelmed for THREE YEARS?? Come on, this is deliberate understaffing.

Pro tip from someone who's gotten through multiple times - call exactly at 8:00:00 AM on weekdays. Not 8:01, not 7:59. Use auto-redial apps if your phone has them. Tuesday and Wednesday seem to have slightly better odds than Monday or Friday.

Dmitry Popov
•I've been doing this! Still no luck after two weeks of trying at exactly 8am.

•What auto-redial app do you use? My iPhone doesn't seem to have this built in.

Miguel Ortiz
•For iPhone try 'Auto Redial' app from the app store. Android has several built-in options depending on your model.

Has anyone tried going to a physical WorkSource office? I'm wondering if they can help or at least get you connected faster.

Zainab Khalil
•WorkSource can help with job search requirements and basic questions, but they can't access your specific claim details or resolve adjudication issues. You still need to reach Washington ESD directly for claim problems.

•Ugh, so basically we're stuck with the phone system no matter what.

I actually got through last week after 6 weeks of trying. Took 4.5 hours on hold but the person was really helpful once I got connected. Don't give up!

Dmitry Popov
•4.5 HOURS?? How did you not get disconnected? Every time I hit 3 hours the call drops.

•I used speaker phone and just did other stuff while waiting. Had to be super careful not to accidentally hang up though.

•What day of the week was this? Maybe certain days are better.

This is exactly why I ended up using that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier. I was spending 6+ hours a day calling for THREE WEEKS. Finally said screw it and tried the service - got connected the next day. Sometimes you just have to admit the system is broken and find another way.

Dmitry Popov
•I'm getting close to that point honestly. This is taking over my entire day every day.

•Same here, I can't keep calling all day when I should be job searching. Might look into this service too.

The whole system is designed to make you give up. They know most people will eventually stop calling and just accept whatever decision they made on your claim.

Zainab Khalil
•That's not really fair - the staff shortage is real and they're processing claims as fast as they can. The phone system needs improvement but it's not malicious.
0 coins
Connor Murphy
•If it's not malicious then why haven't they improved it in years? They could hire more people or upgrade the phone system but they choose not to.

tried calling 200+ times last month, kept a spreadsheet lol. Best luck was Wednesday mornings but still only got through twice

•200 times!! That's dedication. Did you get your issue resolved when you finally got through?

I feel for everyone here. Been calling about my standby status for my union job and it's impossible. My benefit year is about to expire and I'm panicking.

Zainab Khalil
•For standby issues specifically, you might also try contacting your union rep - they sometimes have direct contacts at Washington ESD for these situations.

Washington ESD phone system = modern day torture device. I've calculated I've spent 87 hours calling this month. EIGHTY SEVEN HOURS.

•That's more than two full work weeks just calling! This is insane.

•At what point do we file complaints with state representatives? This can't be legal.

Just want to echo what others said about that Claimyr service - I was super skeptical but finally tried it when I hit my breaking point after 3 weeks of calling. Got connected within 24 hours and resolved my adjudication issue. Worth looking into if you're at your wit's end like I was.

•Okay I'm definitely looking into this now. Three people recommending it has to mean something.

Emma Thompson
•Is it safe though? Like do you have to give them your personal info?

Javier Mendoza
•From what I remember it was pretty straightforward, they don't need anything sensitive to help you get connected.

The worst part is you can't even leave a callback number that works. Their callback system is broken too - I've requested callbacks 15 times and never gotten one.
0 coins
Zainab Khalil
•The callback feature is overwhelmed too unfortunately. It's supposed to work within 2 business days but reality is much longer.

Malik Davis
•Two business days turned into two business MONTHS in my case.

Anyone else notice the phone system hangs up on you right at exactly 3 hours? Like it's programmed to disconnect after that long?
0 coins
Yara Haddad
•YES! I thought I was going crazy but it happens at exactly 3 hours every time.
0 coins
Miguel Ortiz
•It might be an automatic timeout to prevent the system from getting completely jammed up. Still incredibly frustrating though.
0 coins
Isabella Santos
•If that's true then they're essentially limiting how long you can wait, which makes it even harder to get through.

This thread is making me feel so much better - I thought I was the only one going insane trying to reach them. My claim has been pending for 8 weeks now.

Dmitry Popov
•8 weeks?? And I thought my 2 weeks was bad. What's your claim stuck on?

•Identity verification. I sent all the documents they asked for but it's just sitting there in adjudication hell.

PSA: Don't waste time calling the general number. The specialized lines (like for appeals) sometimes have shorter wait times if your issue qualifies.
0 coins
Zainab Khalil
•Good point - there are separate numbers for appeals, overpayments, and employer issues that might be less congested.
0 coins
Dmitry Popov
•Is there a specialized number for adjudication issues? That's what I need help with.
0 coins
Ravi Gupta
•For adjudication you still need the main claims line unfortunately. But worth trying the different numbers if any apply to your situation.

Update for anyone still following this - I finally got through today after reading all these tips! Called at exactly 8am on Wednesday, got through after 2.5 hours on hold. My adjudication issue was resolved in 10 minutes once I talked to someone. The rep said they're seeing tons of calls about adjudication delays right now.

Dmitry Popov
•Congrats!! This gives me hope. Going to keep trying with the Wednesday 8am strategy.

Omar Hassan
•What did they say about the adjudication delays? Is there a reason they're taking so long right now?

•She said they're processing claims from several weeks ago still and they're prioritizing by date received. Mine was finally just at the front of the queue.

Reading all this makes me realize how broken the system is. We shouldn't have to spend weeks of our lives just trying to talk to someone about our own benefits.

Zainab Khalil
•Agreed, the system definitely needs reform. In the meantime though, people still need to get their issues resolved somehow.

•Exactly why services like that Claimyr thing exist - to work around a broken system that should be fixed but isn't.

I'm dealing with the exact same nightmare - been calling for 3 weeks straight about my identity verification that's been stuck since March. The 3-hour automatic disconnect is the worst part because you invest all that time just to get cut off and have to start over. I've started using multiple phones to call simultaneously and keeping detailed logs of my attempts. It's absolutely ridiculous that we have to treat getting basic government services like it's some kind of game show. The system is clearly not designed to actually help people who need it.

Giovanni Rossi
•The multiple phones strategy is actually genius - why didn't I think of that? I've been wasting so much time with just one phone. Do you call the same number on all phones or try different numbers? And yeah, that 3-hour disconnect feels like they're actively trying to prevent us from getting help. It's like they designed the worst possible system on purpose.
