How to get a hold of unemployment - Washington ESD phone lines impossible
I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for over two weeks now about my claim status and it's driving me crazy. Every time I call the main number I either get a busy signal or sit on hold for 3+ hours just to get disconnected. I've tried calling right at 8am when they open, during lunch, even tried the callback option but never get called back. My claim has been in adjudication for a month and I desperately need to speak to someone about missing documents they supposedly need. Has anyone figured out a way to actually get through to a real person at Washington ESD?

•It's so frustrating! I don't understand why they make it so hard to reach them when we need help with our claims.

•The phone system is definitely overwhelmed. Have you tried using the secure messaging feature in your eServices account?

I've had success calling the technical support line instead of the main customer service number. Sometimes they can transfer you to claims if it's a system issue affecting your ability to file.

•What's the technical support number? I didn't know there was a separate line for that.

•It's the same main number but press different options. Try option 5 for technical issues instead of option 1 for claims.

•I tried this but they just told me to call back to the regular claims line anyway

I was in your exact situation last month - adjudication limbo with no way to reach anyone. Someone on here mentioned a service called Claimyr that actually gets you through to Washington ESD agents. I was skeptical but desperate so I tried it. Within 30 minutes I was talking to someone about my claim. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Check out claimyr.com if you're tired of the endless hold times.

•Really? That sounds too good to be true. How does it work exactly?

•It basically handles the calling and waiting for you. You don't have to sit on hold for hours or keep redialing busy signals. They connect you when an agent is available.

•is this some kind of paid service? seems sketchy

•Yeah there's a cost but honestly after wasting weeks trying to get through myself, it was worth it to finally talk to someone about my adjudication.

For adjudication issues specifically, you can also try contacting your state representative's office. They sometimes have direct lines to Washington ESD and can help expedite things.

Amina Diop
•I never thought of that! How do I find my representative's contact info?

Natasha Romanova
•Go to leg.wa.gov and use their district finder. Most offices have constituent services that help with state agency issues.

The callback option is useless. I've requested callbacks probably 15 times and gotten exactly zero calls back. It's like they don't even have that system working.

Oliver Weber
•same!! I think the callback thing is just there to make us feel better but nobody actually calls back

NebulaNinja
•I did get a callback once but it took 4 days and by then I had already resolved my issue through messaging.

try calling the Spokane office directly instead of the main line, sometimes the regional offices are less busy

Amina Diop
•Do you have that number? I'm willing to try anything at this point.

Isabella Oliveira
•I don't have it memorized but you can find regional office numbers on the Washington ESD website under contact info

Natasha Romanova
•Regional offices usually only help with in-person services, not phone claims support. But might be worth a try.

This is exactly why I hate dealing with government agencies. They make it impossible to get help when you need it most.

•I know right? Like we're already stressed about money and then they make it even harder to get our benefits.

•The system is definitely strained. COVID really overwhelmed their capacity and they're still catching up.

Another option is to visit a WorkSource office in person. They sometimes have direct phone lines to Washington ESD that bypass the main system.

Amina Diop
•That's a good idea. There's one about 20 minutes from me. Do I need an appointment?
0 coins
NebulaNinja
•Most WorkSource offices take walk-ins but you might wait a while. Call ahead to check their current policies.

•I tried this and they said they couldn't help with adjudication issues, only job search stuff

Just wanted to update - I used that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier and it really worked. Got connected to a Washington ESD agent who was able to tell me exactly what documents they needed for my adjudication. Claim was approved two days later.

•That's amazing! I'm definitely going to check it out. I can't keep waiting like this.

•how much did it cost you if you don't mind me asking?

Emma Wilson
•Rather not get into specific pricing here but check their website. For me it was worth it to finally get answers.

I've been calling every day at exactly 8:00 AM for three weeks. Set my alarm for 7:55 and dial right at 8. Still can't get through most days.

Amina Diop
•That's dedication! I've tried the 8am thing too but usually get busy signals.
0 coins
Natasha Romanova
•The 8am rush is probably the worst time because everyone tries that. Maybe try calling around 2pm?

Freya Larsen
•I'll try different times but my work schedule makes it hard to call during the day

why don't they just hire more people to answer phones? this is ridiculous
0 coins
Ravi Kapoor
•Exactly! We pay taxes for these services but can't actually use them when we need help.

Natasha Romanova
•Staffing is definitely an issue. They've been trying to hire more customer service reps but it takes time to train people on the complex unemployment system.

Have you tried the live chat feature? Sometimes that's faster than calling.
0 coins
Amina Diop
•There's a live chat? Where do I find that on the website?
0 coins
GalacticGladiator
•I think it's only available certain hours and for certain types of questions. Check the eServices portal.
0 coins
NebulaNinja
•The chat is pretty limited - mostly for password resets and basic account issues, not complex adjudication problems.

I feel your pain. Been trying to reach them about an overpayment notice for two months. The stress is killing me.
0 coins
Amina Diop
•Oh no, overpayment issues are scary. Have you been able to get any help at all?
0 coins
Omar Zaki
•Nothing. I keep getting form letters saying to call the number that nobody answers.
0 coins
Natasha Romanova
•For overpayment issues you might want to consider appealing if you think it's wrong. There are strict deadlines though.

For anyone still struggling with this, I really can't recommend Claimyr enough. I was skeptical about paying for something like this but after weeks of getting nowhere, it was a lifesaver. The video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ explains it better than I can.

Try calling right before they close at 4pm. I got through once doing that.
0 coins
Amina Diop
•Interesting timing! I'll give that a shot tomorrow.
0 coins
Javier Gomez
•That's when I'd expect them to be even busier with people trying to get last-minute calls in

Diego Flores
•yeah it's counterintuitive but worked for me. maybe because most people give up by then?

The whole system is broken. I've been unemployed for 6 months and spent more time trying to reach them than actually looking for work.
0 coins
Amina Diop
•That's awful. The system is supposed to help people, not make things harder.
0 coins
Natasha Romanova
•Don't forget you still need to keep doing your job search activities even while dealing with claim issues. Document everything in case they ask.

I had luck with the secure messaging but it took 2 weeks to get a response and it wasn't even helpful
0 coins
Amina Diop
•Yeah I tried messaging too but got a generic response that didn't address my specific situation.
0 coins
NebulaNinja
•Messaging works better for simple questions. Complex adjudication issues really need phone discussion.

just keep trying every day at different times. eventually you'll get through. that's what I had to do

Amina Diop
•How long did it take you to finally get through?

•about 3 weeks of daily calling but finally got my issue resolved

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions! I'm going to try the Claimyr service that several people mentioned since I can't afford to keep wasting weeks on this. Will update if I finally get through to someone.
