What info do I need to file for unemployment with Washington ESD?
I just got laid off from my job at a manufacturing plant yesterday and need to apply for unemployment benefits. I've never done this before and want to make sure I have everything ready before I start the application on the Washington ESD website. What documents and information should I gather first? I don't want to mess anything up or have delays because I'm missing something important.

You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license or state ID, and employment history for the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason you left each job. Also gather any separation paperwork from your recent job - like termination letters or layoff notices.

•Thanks! I have most of that. Do I need exact addresses for all my previous employers or just the company names?

Natalie Chen
•Exact addresses are best but if you can't find them, Washington ESD can usually look them up by company name and city. Just be as complete as possible.

Make sure you have your bank account information ready for direct deposit setup. You'll also need to know your gross wages from your last employer - check your final paystub or W2 from last year. The application asks for specific dollar amounts.

•Should I wait to get my final paycheck before applying or can I file right away?

•File as soon as possible! There's a waiting week anyway, and delays in filing can cost you money. You can always update wage information later if needed.

I struggled with getting through to Washington ESD when I had questions during my application. Spent hours on hold. If you run into that problem, I found claimyr.com really helpful - they have a service that helps you get through to an actual agent. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•How much does that cost? I'm already worried about money.

•It's worth checking out their site for details, but honestly when you're stuck in the system and can't get answers, having a way to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD is invaluable.

•Good to know there are options if I get stuck. Hopefully the online application goes smoothly.

Don't forget you'll need to register with WorkSource Washington too! That's separate from your UI claim but required for job search activities. They'll ask about that during the application process.

•Is that something I do right away or can I wait?

Hannah White
•Do it within your first week if possible. You need to be actively looking for work to keep getting benefits, and WorkSource helps track that.

ugh the whole process is such a pain. took me forever to get through all the questions and then they wanted more documentation anyway

Maria Gonzalez
•What kind of additional documentation did they ask for?

Michael Green
•proof of wages, separation documents, and then my claim went into adjudication for weeks because there was some question about why I left my previous job

•That's why having all your paperwork ready upfront is so important. Saves time later.

One thing people forget - if you worked in multiple states in the last 18 months, you might need to file in a different state than Washington. The system will tell you if that applies to you.

Maria Gonzalez
•I've only worked in Washington so I should be good there.

•Perfect, then Washington ESD is definitely the right place to file.

Make sure you know the exact reason you were laid off. Was it lack of work, position eliminated, company downsizing? Washington ESD cares about the specific reason and it affects your eligibility.

Maria Gonzalez
•It was a reduction in force - they eliminated several positions including mine due to decreased orders.

•That should qualify you for benefits. Just be consistent with that explanation throughout your application.

You might want to have your alien registration number ready if you're not a US citizen. Also any military discharge papers if you served in the last few years.

Maria Gonzalez
•I'm a US citizen and never served, so I should be fine there.

Pro tip: have your phone ready when you submit the application. Sometimes they call to verify information right away, and missing that call can delay your claim.

Maria Gonzalez
•Good to know! I'll make sure to stay available after I submit.

•They called me like 2 hours after I applied. Scared me because I thought something was wrong but they just needed to confirm some employment dates.

Double check that all your personal info matches exactly with Social Security records - name spelling, date of birth, SSN. Any mismatches can cause delays in processing.

•What if my name on my driver's license is slightly different than on my Social Security card?

•Use whatever matches your Social Security records exactly. You can always clarify discrepancies later if needed.

i wish someone had told me to apply online early in the morning. the website gets really slow in the afternoons and evenings when everyone's trying to use it

Maria Gonzalez
•That's a great tip! I'll try to do it first thing tomorrow morning.

•Yeah Sunday mornings are usually the best time, least traffic on the site.

Have a quiet space and time set aside. The application takes about 30-45 minutes if you have all your info ready. Don't rush through it because mistakes can cause problems later.

•Good advice. I'll make sure I'm not interrupted.

If you do run into issues during the application or after filing, don't spend days trying to get through on the phone. I used claimyr.com when I had problems and they got me connected to an actual Washington ESD representative in minutes instead of hours of waiting.

•Did you have to pay for that service?

Samantha Johnson
•Check their website for current pricing, but for me it was worth it to avoid the frustration of busy signals and dropped calls.

Make sure you understand the difference between gross and net wages when they ask for salary information. They want gross (before taxes and deductions).
0 coins
Maria Gonzalez
•That's helpful - I would have probably put my take-home pay.
0 coins
Benjamin Carter
•Yeah, a lot of people make that mistake. Always gross wages for unemployment calculations.

Don't forget to save or screenshot your confirmation number after you submit. You'll need it to check on your claim status later.

Maria Gonzalez
•Will they email me a confirmation too?
0 coins
Maya Lewis
•Yes, but keep the confirmation number handy just in case. Sometimes the emails end up in spam folders.

If you have any union involvement or pension from your employer, have that information ready too. Not everyone needs it but if it applies to you, they'll ask.
0 coins
Maria Gonzalez
•I wasn't in a union and don't have a pension, so I should be fine there.

Remember you can't collect unemployment if you're getting severance pay. Make sure you know when any severance period ends before you apply.
0 coins
Maria Gonzalez
•They didn't give me any severance, so that's not an issue for me.

Lucy Taylor
•Then you should be able to file right away. Good luck with your application!

One last thing - after you file, you'll need to file weekly claims to keep getting benefits. Set a reminder because missing a week can mess up your payments.
0 coins
Maria Gonzalez
•How soon after I apply do I need to start filing weekly?
0 coins
Connor Murphy
•Usually the week after your claim is processed. Washington ESD will send you instructions.

•I set up a calendar reminder every Sunday to file my weekly claim. Helps me not forget.
