What do I need to file unemployment benefits with Washington ESD?
I just got laid off yesterday and need to apply for unemployment benefits but I have no idea what documents or information I need to gather first. This is my first time ever filing for UI and I'm completely lost. What do I need to have ready before I start the Washington ESD application? I don't want to mess anything up or delay my claim by missing something important.

You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license or state ID, and contact information for all employers from the last 18 months. Make sure you have their complete addresses, phone numbers, and dates you worked there. Also gather any separation documents like termination letters if you have them.

•Do I need pay stubs or just the employer contact info? I have some pay stubs but not all of them.

•The employer contact info is most important. Washington ESD will verify your wages directly with employers, but having pay stubs can help if there are any discrepancies.

Don't forget you need your bank account information for direct deposit setup. You can choose to get a debit card instead but direct deposit is faster. Also have your alien registration number ready if you're not a US citizen.

•Good point about the bank info, I almost forgot about that part.

•The debit card option is actually pretty convenient if you don't want to give out your bank details right away.

I had a nightmare trying to get through to Washington ESD when I had questions during my application. If you run into any issues or need to talk to someone, I recently discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they actually got me connected to an agent in like 20 minutes. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Way better than sitting on hold for hours!

•Is that service legit? I'm always skeptical of third-party stuff for government benefits.

•Yeah I was hesitant too but it's just a calling service that helps you get through the phone queue. They don't handle your claim or ask for personal info, just connect you to the actual Washington ESD agents.

•I might need to try that. I've been trying to call for three days straight with no luck.

make sure u know why u were laid off specifically. they ask detailed questions about the reason for separation and if u say the wrong thing it can delay ur claim for weeks while they investigate

•What do you mean by saying the wrong thing? I was just told it was due to lack of work.

Holly Lascelles
•Lack of work is a valid reason. Just be honest and stick to the facts. Don't overthink it or volunteer extra information that wasn't asked for.

The Washington ESD application asks for your work history going back 5 years, not just 18 months. Have job titles, start/end dates, and hourly wages or salary for each position. If you can't remember exact dates, get as close as possible.

•Wait I thought it was only recent employers that mattered for benefits?

Malia Ponder
•Your benefit amount is calculated on wages from your base period which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters. But they want the full 5-year history for verification purposes.

•That's confusing but okay, better to have too much info than not enough I guess.

Pro tip: apply online at secure.esd.wa.gov as soon as possible, like today if you can. There's a waiting week before benefits start but the sooner you file the sooner that clock starts ticking. Don't wait thinking you need to gather every single document first.

•Should I wait until I have all my employer info organized or just start the application?

Kyle Wallace
•Start it now. You can always log back in to add missing details. The important thing is getting your claim date established.

I'm in the same boat as OP, got let go last week. Does anyone know if getting fired vs laid off makes a difference in what info you need to provide?
0 coins
Holly Lascelles
•Being fired for misconduct can disqualify you from benefits, so Washington ESD will investigate more thoroughly. You'll need to provide your side of the story and they'll contact your employer for their version.

•It wasn't misconduct, more like performance issues. Still worried they might fight the claim though.

Olivia Kay
•performance issues usually don't disqualify u unless it was willful. just be honest about what happened

Don't forget you'll need to register with WorkSource and start your job search right away. They require 3 job search activities per week and you have to keep detailed records. Set up your WorkSource account at the same time as your UI claim.

•What counts as a job search activity? Just applying for jobs or other things too?
0 coins
Edison Estevez
•Applying for jobs, networking events, career fairs, informational interviews, and some training activities count. Keep a log with dates, company names, and contact information.

THE SYSTEM IS SO BROKEN!!! I applied 6 weeks ago and still haven't seen a penny. Now they want MORE documentation that I already provided twice. This whole process is designed to make you give up.

•That's awful, have you tried calling them to find out what's going on with your claim?

Emily Nguyen-Smith
•TRIED CALLING HUNDREDS OF TIMES. Just busy signals and hangups. The system hates working people.

•This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. When my claim got stuck in adjudication I couldn't get through either, but that service got me connected to an actual person who could explain what was happening.

Make sure your mailing address is correct on the application. I put my old address by mistake and it delayed everything because they couldn't send me the monetary determination. Small details matter!

•Good catch, I was about to use my old apartment address out of habit.

If you worked for the federal government or military, you'll need your SF-8 or SF-50 forms. Regular employer verification won't work for federal employment.

•Also if you worked in another state recently, you might need to file an interstate claim which has different requirements.

i filed online but never got any confirmation email. is that normal? should i file again or wait?

•Check your spam folder first. If you don't see anything, log back into the secure site and check your claim status. Don't file a second application as that can cause problems.

•found it in spam, thanks! why do all government emails go to spam lol

For anyone reading this thread - I went through this process 2 months ago and the key is being thorough and honest on the initial application. I had to provide additional documentation later but it was just standard verification stuff. The whole process took about 3 weeks from application to first payment.

•That's reassuring, thanks for sharing your experience. Did you have any issues with the job search requirements?

Olivia Martinez
•Not really, just make sure you're documenting everything properly. I use a simple spreadsheet to track all my applications and networking activities.

One thing no one mentioned - if you have any union affiliation, you might want to contact your union rep. They often have experience helping members navigate the UI system and can provide guidance on what to expect.

•Good point, my union actually has a worksheet they give members with all the info you need to gather before applying.

Just want to add that if you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone for questions after you apply, I had success using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. It's at claimyr.com and they have a demo video that explains how it works. Saved me probably 10+ hours of trying to call on my own.

•How much does it cost? I'm unemployed so money is tight right now.

•It's worth checking out their site for current pricing. For me it was worth it just to avoid the frustration of endless busy signals when I really needed to talk to someone about my claim status.

•Good luck to both of you! Remember the most important thing is just getting started. You can always provide additional documentation later if needed.

Quick question - do I need to wait until my last day of work to apply or can I apply as soon as I get my layoff notice?
0 coins
Holly Lascelles
•You can apply up to 4 weeks before your last day of work if you have a definite separation date. This is especially helpful if you're getting severance pay that might delay when benefits can start.

Aria Washington
•Perfect, I have two weeks left so I'll apply next week. Thanks!

For anyone still reading - make copies of everything you submit. I had to resubmit documents twice because they claimed they never received them. Having copies made it easy to send again quickly.

Chloe Delgado
•Digital copies or physical copies?

Liam O'Reilly
•Both if possible. I scan everything and save PDFs, but also keep paper copies just in case.

Has anyone had experience with the WorkSource job search requirements? I'm confused about what activities actually count and how detailed the documentation needs to be.
0 coins
Edison Estevez
•I mentioned this earlier but basically any legitimate job search activity counts - applications, networking, career fairs, even some online courses. Keep detailed records with dates, company names, and contact info.

Ava Harris
•Do I need to print out proof of every application I submit online?
0 coins
Edison Estevez
•Screenshots or confirmation emails are usually sufficient. The key is being able to prove you actually did the activity if they audit your search log.

This whole thread should be pinned somewhere. So much better than trying to find this info scattered across the Washington ESD website. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences!
