What do you need to apply for unemployment benefits in Washington - complete checklist?
I just got laid off yesterday and need to file for unemployment ASAP but I'm not sure what documents I need to have ready before starting my application. I don't want to mess this up or have delays because I'm missing something important. Can someone give me a complete list of what Washington ESD requires when you apply? I have my last paystub and social security card but what else do I need?

You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license or state ID, employment history for the last 18 months (employer names, addresses, dates worked, reason for separation), bank account info for direct deposit, and your most recent pay stub. Also have your alien registration number ready if you're not a US citizen.

•Do I need the exact addresses of all my employers or just the company names?

•Exact addresses are required. Washington ESD will verify your employment history with each employer so they need complete contact information.

Make sure you have the reason you were separated from each job too. If you were laid off, fired, quit, etc. They ask about this for every employer in your work history.

•What if I can't remember the exact dates I worked at a job from 2 years ago?

•Get as close as you can with month and year. They understand you might not remember exact days but try to be accurate.

I spent hours trying to call Washington ESD to ask questions about my application requirements and could never get through. Found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to an agent in like 10 minutes. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Super helpful when you need to talk to someone at ESD about your specific situation.

•How much does that cost? I'm already broke from losing my job.

•It's way cheaper than missing work to keep calling all day. Plus you actually get through instead of wasting time.

•I'll have to check that out. I've been trying to reach ESD for weeks about my application.

Don't forget you need to register with WorkSource within a certain timeframe after filing. They'll want you to create a profile there and start your job search activities right away.

•How soon after filing do I need to register with WorkSource?

•I think it's within the first week but double check when you file your claim. The requirements are pretty strict about timing.

ugh the whole process is so confusing. i tried to apply last week and got stuck on the employer information part because i couldn't remember my supervisors name from my job 18 months ago

•You can put 'unknown' or 'not available' for supervisor names if you truly can't remember. The important thing is the company information and your job duties.

•oh really? i thought everything had to be perfect or they'd deny my claim

Make sure your bank account info is correct! I put in the wrong routing number and it delayed my payments for 3 weeks while they sorted it out.

•Can you change the bank info after you submit the application?
0 coins
Taylor Chen
•Yes but it's a pain. You have to call or log into your account and update it. Just double check before submitting.

The application asks for your gross wages from each employer. Make sure you have that information because net pay isn't what they want.

•What if I only have my final paystub? Will that show gross wages for the whole time I worked there?
0 coins
Keith Davidson
•Your final paystub should show year-to-date gross wages which is what you need. If not, you might need to contact your former employer for a wage statement.

Pro tip: have all your info organized before you start the online application. It times out if you take too long and you'll have to start over. Happened to me twice!

•How long do you have before it times out?

•I think it's like 20-30 minutes of inactivity. Just have everything written down beforehand.

•This is good advice. I always screenshot each page as I go in case something goes wrong.

If you were in the military you'll need your DD-214. And if you worked for the federal government you need your SF-8 or SF-50 forms.

Megan D'Acosta
•I was never military or federal so I don't need those right?
0 coins
Elijah Knight
•Correct, those are only if you had federal employment in your work history.

Washington ESD's website has a checklist of required documents. Look under 'Apply for Benefits' section. It's pretty comprehensive.

•I looked but found it confusing. That's why I came here for real people's experiences.

•Fair enough. The website isn't super user-friendly. This forum is definitely more helpful for practical advice.

Don't forget to file your weekly claims even if your initial application is still being processed! I missed filing my first week because I thought I had to wait for approval.

•When do you start filing weekly claims? Right after submitting the application?
0 coins
Jay Lincoln
•Yes, you should file for the week you become unemployed even if your claim is still pending. You can lose those weeks if you don't file.

•This is super important! I lost 2 weeks of benefits because nobody told me this.

The system will ask if you're looking for full-time or part-time work. Make sure you understand what you're agreeing to because it affects your job search requirements.

•What's the difference in requirements?
0 coins
Marcus Williams
•If you say you're looking for full-time work, you generally need to be available for full-time positions. Part-time has different availability requirements.

I used Claimyr when I needed to update my application after submitting it. Their service got me through to an ESD agent who helped me make the changes over the phone instead of having to restart the whole application.

•Good to know there's a way to get actual help if needed. The automated system is pretty limited.

Lily Young
•Exactly. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person who can look at your specific situation.

Make sure you know your last day of work vs your last day paid. These can be different dates and ESD asks about both.

Megan D'Acosta
•Why would those be different dates?

Kennedy Morrison
•If you got paid vacation time or severance after your last day of actual work. Or if you worked Monday but got paid on Friday.

The application asks about any pension or retirement benefits you're receiving. Don't forget to include those if applicable - it can affect your benefit amount.

Megan D'Acosta
•I'm only 28 so no pension issues for me, but good to know for others.

•Yeah, it's mainly for older workers but the system asks everyone.

If you have union membership, have that information ready too. Sometimes it's relevant for your claim.
0 coins
Megan D'Acosta
•I wasn't in a union. Does that matter at all?
0 coins
Justin Chang
•No, if you weren't in a union just select 'no' when asked. Only matters if you were a member.

honestly the worst part is waiting for them to process everything. applied 3 weeks ago and still haven't heard anything back about my claim status

•Same here! It's so stressful not knowing if you did everything right.

•This is exactly when Claimyr helped me. I was able to call and check on my claim status instead of just waiting and wondering.

One thing I wish someone had told me - save screenshots of your completed application before submitting. If there are any issues later, it's helpful to have that record.

Megan D'Acosta
•That's really smart advice. I'll definitely do that.

•Yeah, learned that the hard way when ESD said they never received information I was sure I had submitted.

Apply as soon as possible after you lose your job. There's no waiting period in Washington but you want to get the process started right away.
