What documents do I need to file for unemployment benefits with Washington ESD?
I just got laid off from my job at a manufacturing plant after 2 years and need to file for unemployment benefits. This is my first time dealing with Washington ESD and I'm not sure what information or documents I need to gather before I start the application. I heard there's a lot of stuff they ask for and I don't want to mess it up or delay my claim. Can someone tell me exactly what I need to have ready when I file? I'm really stressed about making ends meet and want to get this right the first time.

You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license or state ID, and employment history for the past 18 months including employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation. Also have your bank account info ready for direct deposit setup.

•Thanks! Do I need pay stubs or just the basic employment info?

•Just the basic info is fine for filing. Washington ESD will contact your employers directly to verify wages and employment details.

Make sure you have your alien registration number if you're not a US citizen, and any military service info if applicable. The Washington ESD application is pretty thorough.

•I'm a citizen so that shouldn't apply to me, but good to know for others reading this.

I just filed last month and it was easier than I expected. You can do it all online at esd.wa.gov. The hardest part was remembering exact dates for all my previous jobs. I'd suggest making a list with employer names, addresses, phone numbers, supervisor names, start/end dates, and your final wage before you start the application.

•That's really helpful! How long did it take you to complete the application?

•About 30-45 minutes once I had all my info organized. The site saves your progress so you can stop and come back if needed.

•Same here, took me about an hour but I had to look up some old employer addresses. Definitely gather everything first!

One thing that really helped me was using Claimyr to get through to a Washington ESD representative when I had questions about my application. I was worried I'd filled something out wrong and couldn't get through on the phone lines. Found them at claimyr.com and they got me connected to an agent who walked me through everything. They even have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•How much does that cost? I'm already tight on money and can't afford extra services right now.

•It's worth checking out their site for the details. For me it was worth it to avoid the stress of trying to reach Washington ESD on my own when I needed help.

ugh the washington esd system is so confusing. i tried filing online last week and got stuck on the work search requirements part. do you have to register with worksource before filing or can you do it after??

•You can register with WorkSourceWA after filing your initial claim, but you need to do it before you start filing your weekly claims. It's a separate requirement.

•ok thanks that makes more sense. the website wasn't super clear about the timing

Don't forget you'll need to know why you were separated from your job. If it was a layoff that's straightforward, but if you were fired or quit you'll need to explain the circumstances. Be honest but brief.

Ava Garcia
•It was definitely a layoff due to reduced production. Should be pretty clear cut.

•Perfect, that's the easiest type of separation to process. Your claim should go through without any issues then.

I had to gather all this same info when I filed 6 months ago. One tip - if you worked for a temp agency or had multiple short-term jobs, make sure you include ALL of them even if they were just a few weeks. Washington ESD uses all your wages from the past year to calculate your benefit amount.

•Good point! I did some part-time work before my main job. I'll make sure to include everything.

•Yes! I forgot about a 2-week temp job and it delayed my claim while they sorted it out. Include everything to avoid problems.

The Washington ESD application asks for your preferred language for correspondence and whether you need any accommodations. Also make sure your mailing address is current since they send important notices by mail.

Ava Garcia
•Thanks, I wouldn't have thought about the mailing address being super important.

Just a heads up that after you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to actually receive payments. The initial application is just step one. You'll also need to complete work search activities and report any work or income each week.

•How many work search activities do you need to do per week in Washington?

Javier Torres
•It's typically 3 work search activities per week, but check your specific requirements when you file. Some people have different requirements based on their situation.

I remember being really nervous about filing too. The most important things are having your SSN, employment history with dates, and knowing your separation reason. Everything else you can figure out as you go through the application. Washington ESD's website actually walks you through each step pretty clearly.

•That's reassuring! I tend to overthink things when I'm stressed about money.

•Totally understandable! Just take it one step at a time and don't hesitate to call if you get stuck on anything.

One more thing - make sure you file as soon as possible after your last day of work. There's no waiting period in Washington but you can't get benefits for weeks before you actually file your claim.

•Good to know! My last day was Friday so I'll file this weekend.

•Yeah don't wait! I procrastinated for two weeks and lost out on those benefit payments.

The system will also ask about any pension or retirement income you might be receiving. Most people don't have this but it's worth mentioning since it can affect your benefit amount if you do.

Ava Garcia
•Definitely don't have any pension income at my age, but good to know they ask about that.

I used Claimyr when I needed to talk to someone about my weekly claim filing and it was a lifesaver. The regular phone lines were always busy but they got me through to an actual person who could answer my questions about work search requirements.

•Did you have trouble with the work search log? I keep hearing different things about what counts as a valid work search activity.

•That's exactly what I needed help with! The agent explained that online applications, networking contacts, and job fairs all count. They were really helpful in clarifying the requirements.

Don't stress too much about having every single detail perfect. I made a small mistake on my application (got one employer's address wrong) and Washington ESD just contacted me to correct it. They're used to dealing with people who are stressed and make minor errors.

•Same thing happened to me. They just sent a letter asking for clarification and it didn't delay my payments at all.

make sure you know if you want direct deposit or a debit card for payments. i chose direct deposit and got my first payment faster than friends who used the debit card option

Ava Garcia
•Definitely want direct deposit. Do I need a specific type of account or will any checking account work?

•any checking or savings account works fine. just need the routing and account numbers

The application will ask about your availability for work and any restrictions you might have on the type of work you can accept. Be honest but don't be overly restrictive or it could affect your eligibility.
0 coins
Ava Garcia
•What do you mean by overly restrictive? I'm in manufacturing so I'd probably look for similar work.
0 coins
Anastasia Sokolov
•That's fine! They just don't want you to say you'll only work one specific job title or only certain days of the week unless you have a legitimate reason.

Last tip - after you submit your application, you should get a confirmation number. Write it down! You might need it if you have to call Washington ESD about your claim status.

Ava Garcia
•Great advice! I'll screenshot it and write it down. Thanks everyone for all the helpful information!

If you run into any issues reaching Washington ESD after filing, I had good luck with Claimyr too. Sometimes you need to talk to someone about adjudication delays or claim issues and the regular phone lines are impossible. Worth having as a backup option.

Ava Garcia
•I'll keep that in mind. Hopefully I won't need it but good to know there are options if I get stuck.

Remember that filing is just the beginning. You'll need to keep filing weekly claims and doing work searches to continue receiving benefits. But don't worry about all that right now - just focus on getting that initial application submitted!
