Washington ESD unemployment appeal reversed - when do I get paid?
My appeal decision just came back and they reversed the disqualification! I've been waiting 6 months for this and I'm so relieved. The hearing officer agreed that I was wrongfully terminated and that Washington ESD made an error in their initial determination. My question is - how long does it take for them to actually start paying out the benefits? Do I need to file new weekly claims or will they backdate everything automatically? I'm behind on rent and really need to know when to expect the money.

Congratulations on winning your appeal! Usually Washington ESD processes reversed appeals within 1-2 weeks. They should automatically calculate your back pay from when you were originally disqualified. You'll need to continue filing your weekly claims going forward though.

•Thank you! Should I file claims for the weeks I missed during the appeal process or just start filing from now?

•Just file going forward - they'll handle the back weeks automatically when they process the reversal.

same thing happened to me last year, took about 10 days after the appeal decision before I saw the payment. they paid everything in one lump sum for all the back weeks

•That's exactly what I'm hoping for! Did they send you any notification before the payment hit your account?

•yeah they sent a determination letter showing the payment calculation but the money showed up before the letter did lol

I had to call Washington ESD after my appeal was reversed because nothing happened for 3 weeks. Turns out there was some internal processing issue they had to fix manually. If you don't see movement within 2 weeks, definitely call them. I used Claimyr.com to get through - they have this system that calls Washington ESD repeatedly until you get connected. Way better than trying to call yourself and getting busy signals all day.

•Oh wow, I hope that doesn't happen to me. How does Claimyr work exactly?

•You just enter your info and they call the Washington ESD number over and over until they get through, then transfer you to an actual person. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that service but honestly anything is better than sitting on hold for hours just to get disconnected

Make sure you check your correspondence inbox on the Washington ESD website. After my appeal reversal they sent a new monetary determination showing my updated benefit amount and the effective date. Sometimes there are additional steps you need to take.

•Good point, I'll check that right now. I've been so focused on waiting for payment I forgot to look for new notices.

•Yeah definitely keep checking. Sometimes they'll ask you to verify your identity again or update your job search activities before releasing the back pay.

Ugh the whole appeals process is such a nightmare. 6 months is ridiculous! At least you won but Washington ESD really needs to fix their system. Too many people get wrongly denied in the first place.

•It was definitely stressful but I'm just glad it's over. The hearing officer was actually really thorough and fair.

•I'm in the middle of an appeal now and this gives me hope. How long did it take from filing the appeal to getting the hearing scheduled?
0 coins
Chloe Anderson
•About 3 months for me to get the hearing date, then another month for the decision after the hearing.

One thing to watch out for - if you had any part-time work during the disqualification period, make sure you report those earnings when they ask. They'll deduct it from your back pay calculation but it's better to be honest upfront.

•I did work a few weeks part-time during the appeal. Should I call them about that or wait for them to ask?

•I'd wait for them to ask during the back pay calculation process. They'll send you forms to fill out if needed.

Just want to add - if anyone else is dealing with Washington ESD delays after an appeal reversal, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really saved me time. Instead of spending whole days trying to get through on the phone, I just set up the callback and went about my day. They called me back when they got connected to an actual Washington ESD rep.

•Is there a cost for using that service?

•There is but honestly it was worth it to not waste hours of my life on hold. Plus I needed to get my claim fixed ASAP for financial reasons.

•I might try this if my appeal goes through. Been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks about my case status.

How long was your hearing? I have one coming up next week and I'm nervous about what to expect.

Chloe Anderson
•Mine was about 45 minutes. The hearing officer asked me to explain my side, then asked my former employer questions. Make sure you have all your documentation ready - pay stubs, emails, anything that supports your case.

Ethan Taylor
•Thanks, that helps a lot. Did your employer show up to the hearing?

Chloe Anderson
•Yes they did, but their story had holes in it which helped my case. Just stick to the facts and be honest.

The waiting is the worst part! I'm still waiting for my hearing to be scheduled. At least you're at the end of the process now.

•Hang in there! It feels like forever but it does eventually happen. Make sure you gather all your evidence while you're waiting.

Washington ESD should automatically update your claim status and start processing back pay within their system. You might see pending payments show up in your account before you get the official notice.

Chloe Anderson
•I'll keep checking my account daily then. Do you know if they pay interest on the delayed benefits?

Carmen Lopez
•No interest unfortunately, just the back pay amount. But at least you'll get everything you were owed.

Make sure your direct deposit info is still current in your account! I had to update mine after my appeal and it delayed my payment by another week.

•Good catch! I'll double check that right now.

What was your original disqualification for if you don't mind me asking? I got denied for 'misconduct' but I think they got the facts wrong.

Chloe Anderson
•Mine was for 'voluntary quit' but I was actually laid off due to lack of work. My employer initially told Washington ESD I quit voluntarily which wasn't true.

•That's so frustrating when employers lie about the circumstances. Glad you were able to prove them wrong.

Don't forget that once you start getting paid again you'll need to keep up with your job search requirements. They're pretty strict about that now.

•Yeah I've been keeping track of my job searches throughout the appeal process just in case. Better safe than sorry with Washington ESD.

UPDATE: I just tried that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier because I needed to check on something with Washington ESD. Actually worked! Got connected to a real person in like 20 minutes instead of the usual all-day phone marathon.

•How much does it cost? My phone bill is already crazy high from calling Washington ESD so much.

•Way less than what I was spending on my phone bill trying to call them myself constantly!

Six months for an appeal is insane. The whole unemployment system needs an overhaul. At least the hearing officers seem to be fair when you finally get to them.

•The hearing officer definitely listened to both sides and asked good questions. I felt like I got a fair hearing even though the wait was terrible.

Just went through this same situation 2 months ago. My payment showed up exactly 8 business days after the appeal decision was mailed to me. Washington ESD is slow but they do eventually process everything correctly.

Chloe Anderson
•That's really helpful to know! I got my decision letter yesterday so I'll count 8 business days from then.

GalacticGuru
•Yeah and don't panic if it takes the full 8 days or even a bit longer. The system just takes time to update everything behind the scenes.

Final tip - when you do start getting paid again, screenshot everything for your records. Washington ESD systems can be glitchy and you want proof of all your payments in case there are any issues later.

Congratulations on winning your appeal! That must be such a huge relief after 6 months of stress. From what I've seen with Washington ESD, the back pay usually processes within 7-10 business days once the appeal decision is finalized. They should automatically calculate everything from your original disqualification date and pay it out as a lump sum. Just make sure to keep filing your weekly claims going forward and double-check that your direct deposit info is current in your account. Fingers crossed you see that payment hit soon - being behind on rent while waiting for bureaucracy to work is the worst!

•Thank you so much! Yes, it's such a relief to finally have this resolved. I really appreciate the timeline - 7-10 business days gives me something concrete to expect. I've already double-checked my direct deposit info and it's all current. The rent situation has been really stressful, but knowing there's light at the end of the tunnel makes it bearable. I'll definitely keep filing my weekly claims going forward. Thanks for the encouragement!

Hey Chloe, huge congratulations on winning your appeal! 6 months is way too long to wait but I'm so glad justice prevailed. I went through something similar last year and the back pay took about 12 business days to hit my account after the decision letter was issued. Washington ESD automatically processed all the retroactive weeks in one payment - it was actually larger than I expected because they included the federal supplements too. One thing I'd recommend is setting up text alerts in your online account if you haven't already, that way you'll get notified as soon as any payments are processed. The wait is almost over!

•Thanks for sharing your experience! 12 business days is a bit longer than some others mentioned but still reasonable. I'm really hoping to see that payment soon - the federal supplements would definitely help make up for some of the financial stress I've been dealing with. I'll set up those text alerts right now, that's a great tip! It's encouraging to hear from people who have been through this exact situation and came out the other side.
