Won my Washington ESD unemployment appeal - when do I get paid?
Finally got the good news that my unemployment appeal was approved after 6 weeks of waiting! The hearing officer ruled in my favor and overturned Washington ESD's original disqualification decision. My question is - how long does it usually take to actually receive the back pay? My claim shows approved status now but no payment dates yet. I'm owed about 8 weeks of benefits from when my claim was initially denied. Anyone know what the typical timeline is for getting paid after winning an appeal?

Congratulations on winning your appeal! In my experience, it usually takes about 1-2 weeks for Washington ESD to process the back payments after a successful appeal. They have to update your claim status in their system and calculate all the weeks you're owed.

Congratulations on winning your appeal! Usually Washington ESD processes successful appeal payments within 5-10 business days. Since you mentioned back pay from October, they'll need to calculate all the weekly benefits you were entitled to during that period. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting for the back pay.

•Thank you! I've been filing weekly claims the whole time even during the appeal process. Should I expect one lump sum payment or will they split it up?

•Typically it comes as one lump sum for all the back pay, then your regular weekly payments resume their normal schedule.

Mine took about a week after I won my appeal. The back pay was deposited first, then my regular weekly claim processed a few days later. Keep an eye on your SecureAccess Washington account for updates.

You should see the back payments within 2-3 business days actually. Washington ESD has gotten much faster with appeals processing lately. Check your SecureAccess Washington account - you might see the payment status update before you get the actual deposit.

•Usually it's one payment that covers all the weeks you were owed, but it might show up as separate transactions on your bank statement.

Just a heads up - you might want to try calling Washington ESD to confirm they received the appeal decision and that your claim status has been updated. Sometimes there are delays between the hearing decision and when they actually process it in their system. I had to call to get mine moving after winning my appeal.

The appeal approval triggers a manual review process at Washington ESD. They need to recalculate your entire benefit period and issue retroactive payments. Typically 7-14 business days, but can be longer if there are complications with your wage records or if you worked during the disqualification period.

•I didn't work at all during the disqualification period, so hopefully that makes it simpler. Do they pay interest on the delayed benefits?

•No interest on delayed UI benefits in Washington. You'll get the full amount you were entitled to during the disqualification period, but no additional compensation for the delay.

The payment timeline can vary depending on how complex your case was and whether there were any other flags on your account. For straightforward appeals, 5-7 business days is typical. For more complex cases with multiple issues, it could take 2-3 weeks. Since you won on a voluntary quit issue, that should be relatively straightforward to process.

Liam Murphy

•How do you set up direct deposit if you don't have it? I might need to do that.

I tried that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier and it actually worked! Got connected to a Washington ESD agent in like 15 minutes instead of calling all day. The agent was able to look up my appeal status and give me an exact timeline for when my payments would process.

Charlie Yang
•Really? That's amazing. I might have to try that if I don't see anything by next week.
0 coins
Emily Thompson
•Yeah, totally worth it. The agent explained that appeal payments go through a different processing queue and gave me a reference number to track it.

It's ridiculous that people have to go through all this just to get unemployment benefits. The whole system is designed to make it as difficult as possible. At least you won your appeal though - that's something to celebrate!

Chloe Martin
•I agree, the process was much more complicated than it should have been. But I'm grateful for the outcome.

•The appeal process exists for a reason though. Sometimes initial decisions are wrong and need to be corrected.

Just curious - what was your appeal about? I might be facing a similar situation and wondering what kind of evidence helped you win.
0 coins
Chloe Martin
•They initially said I quit voluntarily, but I was actually laid off due to budget cuts. I had documentation from my employer showing it was a layoff, not a resignation.
0 coins
Mateo Rodriguez
•That's helpful to know. Documentation seems to be key in these appeals.

update on my situation - I finally got through to someone at Washington ESD and they said my payment should process this week. apparently there was some kind of system glitch that was holding up appeal payments. might be worth calling if you don't see movement soon

•Thanks for the update! How long did it take you to get through when you called?

Also, once the payments start, they should be automatic going forward as long as you keep filing your weekly claims and meeting the job search requirements. The retroactive stuff is a one-time catch-up payment.
0 coins
Jordan Walker
•That makes sense. I've been keeping up with my job search log the whole time, so I should be good on that front.

Make sure your direct deposit info is still correct in your account! Mine had gotten messed up somehow and that delayed my payment by another week.

•No problem, learned that lesson the hard way. Washington ESD doesn't always notify you if there's a payment issue.

Congrats on the win! The system is so stacked against us that it feels amazing when justice actually prevails. Enjoy that retroactive payment when it comes - you've earned every penny of it.

the longest part for me was waiting for the actual hearing. once they made the decision the money came pretty fast

Just curious - did you have to pay back any benefits while your claim was disqualified? I'm worried about overpayment issues if I win my appeal.
0 coins
Charlie Yang
•No, I wasn't receiving any benefits during the disqualification period, so no overpayment issues. That's probably why my case is more straightforward.
0 coins
Isabella Russo
•If you received benefits during a period that was later disqualified, and then win your appeal, Washington ESD should reverse any overpayment determination as well. The appeal decision covers the entire period in question.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I've been waiting 3 months for my appeal hearing and still nothing. They make it impossible to get help.

Washington ESD really needs to improve their communication about appeal timelines. I had no idea what to expect after winning mine either.
0 coins
Charlie Yang
•Totally agree. A simple email explaining the next steps would have saved me a lot of anxiety.

•They don't communicate about anything. It's like they want you to give up and go away.

Maya Jackson
Quick question - do you have to pay taxes on the back pay or is it treated differently?
0 coins
Vincent Bimbach
•You'll pay taxes on it just like regular unemployment benefits. They should withhold taxes if you elected that option when you first filed.
0 coins
Skylar Neal
•Yeah I had taxes withheld from the start so hopefully they'll withhold from the back pay too.
0 coins
Carmen Diaz
I had a similar situation last year and got my back pay within 5 business days of the appeal decision. Washington ESD seems to prioritize appeal payments since they know people have been waiting.

Check if your bank account info is still current in your Washington ESD profile. Sometimes payment delays happen because they're trying to deposit to an old account.

Won my appeal back in March and the whole payment thing was a nightmare. Took 3 weeks and multiple calls to get my back pay sorted out. The system is just broken honestly.
0 coins

One more tip - set up text or email alerts in your Washington ESD account if you haven't already. They'll notify you when payments are processed, which is better than constantly checking your bank account.
0 coins
Jordan Walker
•I didn't know about the alerts! I'll set those up right now. Thanks for the tip.

One thing that helped me was sending a message through SecureAccess Washington asking about the payment timeline after my appeal. Sometimes that gets things moving faster.
0 coins

Update on my earlier comment about Claimyr - just wanted to mention that when I used it, the Washington ESD agent was able to put a priority flag on my appeal payment processing. Might be worth asking about if you do end up calling.
0 coins
Charlie Yang
•That's really helpful to know! I didn't realize they could flag payments for priority processing.
0 coins
Elijah Brown
•wait they can do that? i've been waiting 3 weeks for my appeal payment and nobody told me about priority processing

Washington ESD is required to pay interest on back pay for appeals that take longer than 30 days to process. Not much but every little bit helps when you're waiting for money.
0 coins
Liam Murphy
•I didn't know that about the interest! My appeal took about 6 weeks total so maybe I'll get a little extra.
0 coins
Gabrielle Dubois
•Yeah it's usually only a few dollars but it should show up as a separate line item if you're eligible.

Carter Holmes
Congrats on the win! I'm curious what your appeal was about? My employer is trying to claim misconduct for being 5 minutes late twice and I'm preparing for my hearing.
0 coins
Ella Thompson
•Mine was also a misconduct claim - they said I violated company policy but couldn't prove it was willful. The key was showing it was just a misunderstanding, not intentional rule-breaking.
0 coins
Carter Holmes
•That's helpful, thanks. Did you have a lawyer or represent yourself?

Make sure your direct deposit info is still current in your account. If your bank info changed during the appeal process, that could delay payment.

One more thing to keep in mind - if you're owed a large amount in back pay, Washington ESD sometimes splits it into multiple payments. Don't panic if you don't get the full amount in the first deposit.
0 coins
Charlie Yang
•Oh that's good to know! I was expecting one big lump sum. How do they usually split it up?
0 coins
Grace Patel
•Usually by benefit week, so you might get 2-3 payments covering different date ranges. Each payment will show the specific weeks it covers in your payment history.

0 coins

For anyone else reading this thread who might be dealing with appeal payments, here's a quick summary of what to expect: 1) Appeal decision issued 2) Claim status updates to 'payable' within 1-3 days 3) Back pay processes as lump sum within 5-10 business days 4) Regular weekly payments resume normal schedule. One thing to watch out for - sometimes the back pay comes through but your regular weekly benefit amount might be different than before if you had other income during the appeal period. Double check your benefit calculation once payments start.
0 coins
Ella Thompson
•I did have some part-time work while waiting for the appeal. Will that affect my benefit amount going forward?
0 coins
Jeremiah Brown
•It might - Washington ESD recalculates based on any wages earned during the benefit year. Not necessarily a bad thing, just something to be aware of.
0 coins
Amelia Cartwright
For anyone still struggling to reach Washington ESD about appeals or other issues, I can't recommend Claimyr enough. Used them twice now when I couldn't get through on my own. Super straightforward process and way better than spending entire days redialing the same number.
0 coins
Sophia Long
•How does something like that even work? Do they just call repeatedly until they get through?

Quick question - after you win an appeal, do you still have to do the job search requirements immediately or is there a grace period while everything gets sorted out?
0 coins
Rachel Clark
•You're still required to be actively seeking work and available for work. The appeal doesn't suspend those requirements, just restores your eligibility for benefits.
0 coins
Logan Greenburg
•Got it, thanks for clarifying that. Don't want to mess anything up now that I finally won!

This gives me hope for my own appeal. Been waiting 2 months for a hearing date and starting to lose faith in the system. Did you have to submit additional documentation after winning or was that it?

Probably a dumb question but after winning an appeal, do you start over with a new benefit year or continue with your original claim dates?
