Washington ESD unemployment appeal was reversed when do I get paid?
My unemployment appeal hearing was last Thursday and I just got the decision today saying it was reversed in my favor! Washington ESD originally denied my claim back in September saying I quit voluntarily but the judge agreed that I was actually constructively discharged due to unsafe working conditions. Now I'm wondering how long it takes to actually get the backpay? The decision letter doesn't give any timeline for when payments will start. Has anyone been through this process before?

Congratulations on winning your appeal! Usually takes 1-2 weeks for the payments to process after a reversal. Washington ESD has to update your claim in their system and calculate all the back weeks you're owed.

•Thanks! That's reassuring. I was worried something else was wrong since it's been radio silent.

•yeah same timeline for me last year, took about 10 business days before I saw the lump sum hit my account

Congratulations on winning your appeal! From what I understand, it can take 2-4 weeks for Washington ESD to process the payment after a favorable appeal decision. They have to update your claim in their system and calculate all the back pay.

•Thanks! 2-4 weeks feels like forever when you're behind on everything but at least there's a timeline.

•I had a similar situation and it was closer to 3 weeks before I saw anything. The lump sum was nice though!

Congrats on winning your appeal! From what I remember when mine was reversed, it took about 2-3 weeks for the first payment to hit my account. They had to recalculate everything and process all the back weeks.

•Thanks! Did you get all the back pay in one lump sum or was it spread out over multiple payments?

•Mine came as one big payment covering all the weeks I should have been paid, then regular weekly payments started after that.

Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims during this waiting period. Even though the appeal is resolved, you still need to maintain your claim to continue receiving benefits going forward.

•Oh good point! I've been filing them but wasn't sure if I needed to since the appeal was pending.

•Definitely keep filing. The back pay and ongoing benefits are processed separately in their system.

Congrats on winning your appeal! That's a huge relief. From what I remember when this happened to my brother, it took about 2-3 weeks for the payments to start showing up after the reversal decision.

•I think it came in chunks, not all at once. But he did get everything he was owed eventually.

You should call Washington ESD to confirm they received the appeal decision and ask about the status. Sometimes there can be delays if they're waiting for additional documentation or if there are system issues.

You should see the money within 10-15 business days typically. Washington ESD has to process the reversal through their system and recalculate your benefit amount for each week you were denied. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting for the back pay to process.

•I've been continuing to file weekly claims the whole time, even during the appeal process. Good to know about the 10-15 day timeframe.

•@profile8 You should always keep filing weekly claims even if you're appealing. Contact Washington ESD to see if you can backfile for the weeks you missed.

I had a similar situation last year and honestly the hardest part was just getting through to someone at Washington ESD to check on the status. I kept calling but could never get past the busy signal. Eventually found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual agent who could tell me exactly where my payment was in the system. Might be worth checking out claimyr.com if you need to talk to someone about your timeline.

•Claimyr basically calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an agent. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call myself.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Might be worth checking out since you need to verify your appeal payment status.

You'll need to keep filing your weekly claims even though you haven't been getting paid during the appeal process. Washington ESD should process all the backpay for the weeks you were eligible but not paid. Usually takes 2-4 weeks after the appeal decision for the system to update and release payments.

Dmitry Volkov
•I have been filing weekly claims this whole time, so that's good. Should I expect any issues with the backpay calculation?

•The system should calculate it automatically based on your filed claims. If there are any discrepancies, you can contact Washington ESD to review it.

I went through this exact same situation last year. After my appeal was reversed, I had to wait about 3 weeks before I saw any money. The frustrating part was trying to get someone at Washington ESD on the phone to check the status. I must have called hundreds of times and kept getting the busy signal or got disconnected.

I went through this exact situation 8 months ago. Won my appeal but then had to wait 3 weeks for payment because they had to recalculate everything manually. The back pay came as one big lump sum though which was nice.

The backpay process is pretty straightforward once the appeal decision is entered into the system. Washington ESD has to update your claim status, recalculate all your eligible weeks, and then process the payments. This usually happens within 10-15 business days of the appeal decision date.
0 coins
Dmitry Volkov
•That's more specific than what I got from the decision letter. Do you know if they pay interest on the delayed payments?
0 coins
Zainab Omar
•No, Washington ESD doesn't pay interest on delayed unemployment benefits, even if the delay was due to their incorrect initial decision.

Connor Murphy
wait so you can appeal unemployment decisions?? I got denied for supposedly not looking for work hard enough but I was definitely doing my job searches. how do you even start an appeal?
0 coins

•Yes, you can appeal most Washington ESD decisions. You should have received an appeal form with your denial notice. You typically have 30 days from the date of the decision to file an appeal.

Connor Murphy
•I think I threw that paperwork away thinking it was just standard stuff. Can I still appeal if it's been like 6 weeks?

One thing to keep in mind is that your back pay might push you into a higher tax bracket for the year since it's all being paid at once. You might want to set aside some money for taxes.

One thing to watch out for - make sure all your weekly claims during the appeal period were filed correctly. If you made any mistakes on those, it could delay your backpay while they sort it out.

This whole system is such a mess. Why does it take weeks to pay someone after they've already proven they deserve the benefits?

Also keep in mind that your backpay will be subject to taxes. Washington ESD will withhold federal taxes if you had that option selected, but you might want to set aside some money for state taxes depending on your situation.

•Good point. With several months of backpay hitting at once, that could bump me into a higher tax bracket for this year.
