Appeal marked 'Reversed' by judge - when will ESD release my payments?

I just got my appeal decision back from the Office of Administrative Hearings today and it says 'REVERSED' at the top of the document! I've been fighting this disqualification for nearly 2 months now (was denied initially because they said I quit without good cause, but I had TONS of documentation showing a hostile work environment). The judge's conclusion basically says ESD's determination is reversed and I had good cause to leave my position. Does anyone know what happens next? The decision says it's being sent back to ESD for processing. How long until I actually see my backpay? I'm owed about $6,200 for the weeks I've been filing while waiting for this appeal. Do I need to contact ESD or just wait? I'm so relieved but also really need this money ASAP to catch up on bills!

Congrats on winning your appeal!! When I won mine in February, it took about 2-3 weeks for ESD to process everything and release the payments. The letter from the judge should have been automatically sent to ESD - you don't need to send it yourself. Just keep filing your weekly claims like normal while you wait. And be prepared that they might release payments in batches rather than all at once.

Thanks for the info! 2-3 weeks feels like forever when you're behind on rent, but at least there's light at the end of the tunnel. Did you have to do anything special to make sure ESD got the judge's decision? I'm paranoid they'll somehow lose it.

congrats!!!! my appeal took like 5 weeks to get paid after the judge ruling tho so dont get ur hopes up for fast payment. esd is soooooo slow with everything

5 WEEKS?? That's absolutely ridiculous!! The system is DESIGNED to make people suffer while bureaucrats take their sweet time. They deny people immediately but take FOREVER to pay what they owe! THIS is why people end up homeless while waiting for THEIR OWN MONEY that they paid into the system!

Definitely a good sign! "Reversed" means the judge overturned ESD's decision in your favor. Here's what typically happens: 1. The judge's decision is sent to ESD (usually takes 3-7 business days) 2. ESD has to review the decision and implement it 3. They'll update your claim status and release payments In most cases, this takes 2-4 weeks from when the judge issues the decision. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims during this time! If it goes beyond 4 weeks, you should contact ESD directly. One more thing - check if the decision is marked as "final" or if there's a deadline for appeal by ESD. Sometimes ESD can appeal the judge's decision (though this is rare when it's about good cause for quitting).

Thank you for such a detailed explanation! The decision does say it's the "Initial Order" and mentions something about a 30-day appeal window. Does that mean ESD could still reverse the judge's decision?? That would be devastating.

If you're having trouble reaching ESD to check on your payment status (which I definitely recommend doing after about 2 weeks), I had success using Claimyr to get through to a live agent. Before that I was calling for days with no luck - either endless holds or disconnects. With Claimyr I got through in about 20 minutes. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 Once I got through to an agent, they were able to expedite my payment after I explained I'd won my appeal and was facing eviction. Worth considering if you hit roadblocks.

I've never heard of this service, but I'm going to bookmark it just in case. I've tried calling ESD before and it's a complete nightmare. I'll give ESD two weeks to start processing things, then might try this if I don't see movement. Thanks!

My sister went through this last summer. It seriously depends on which ESD office handles your claim after the reversal. Some are fast (1-2 weeks) and others can take over a month. You should call them after a week and a half to make sure they actually received the judge's decision. Don't just assume the system works.

Actually it doesn't depend on the office - all appeal implementations are handled centrally by the Benefits Unit in Olympia. But definitely agree that following up is smart! The system is overloaded with claims and sometimes things do fall through cracks.

I went through EXACTLY the same thing in January!! Won my appeal for the SAME reason (hostile work environment that ESD initially didn't accept). Got the REVERSED decision and thought I'd see money quickly. Sad reality: it took FIVE FULL WEEKS for ESD to process it and release my payments!!! Called EVERY DAY and kept getting the runaround that it was "in process" and "being reviewed by a specialist." System is TOTALLY BROKEN! My advice: document EVERYTHING. Take screenshots of your eServices account every few days. Call at least twice a week. And if you get a representative who seems helpful, write down their name and ID number!

Five weeks? That's really disheartening. Did calling regularly help speed things up, or did it just make you feel more in control of the situation? I'm wondering if there's anything I can actually DO to make this go faster.

Just wanted to add - make sure you download a copy of the judge's decision and keep it somewhere safe. In rare cases, ESD has been known to request another copy if there are technical issues with their systems. Also, a "reversed" decision is definitely good news! It means you won on the main issue. One thing to note: if you had any other eligibility issues besides the quit/discharge reason, those would still need to be resolved separately. For example, if you also had an able and available issue or a job search issue, that wouldn't be covered by this appeal decision.

Thank you! I've already saved multiple copies of the decision. Thankfully the only issue was the separation from work - I've been doing all my job searches and everything else by the book. I just hope they process it quickly because my finances are seriously tight right now.

hey did u get paid yet? curious how long its taking people in 2025 to get their backpay after winning appeals

Not yet - it's been 8 days since the decision. I called ESD yesterday and they confirmed they received the judge's decision, but said it's "in the queue for processing" and couldn't give me an estimate. Super frustrating but at least they have it.
