Is Washington ESD unemployment office open on MLK Day?
Does anyone know if Washington ESD is open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day? I need to call them about my weekly claim and I'm not sure if it's a state holiday for them. Their website doesn't clearly say and I don't want to waste time calling if nobody's there.

MLK Day is a state holiday so Washington ESD offices are closed. You won't be able to reach anyone by phone today.

•Thanks! That's what I figured but wanted to make sure.

•the online system should still work though right? just no phone support

Yes, Washington ESD follows state holidays. MLK Day means no phone service, but you can still file your weekly claim online through SecureAccess Washington (SAW). The online system runs 24/7 except during maintenance.

•Perfect, I can handle filing online. Just needed to talk to someone about an adjudication issue but that can wait until tomorrow.

•Good luck getting through tomorrow though... Tuesdays after holidays are always swamped

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I've had success using Claimyr.com - it's a service that helps you get through to actual agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Really helpful when you need to speak to someone about adjudication or claim issues.

•Interesting, never heard of that. Is it legit?

•Yeah it's legitimate. I used it last month when my claim was stuck in adjudication for weeks. Much better than sitting on hold for hours.

•How much does something like that cost though?

just file your weekly claim online like normal, the holiday doesnt affect that part of the system

•Yeah that's the plan, thanks

For future reference, Washington ESD is closed on all federal holidays: New Year's Day, MLK Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. They also close early on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

•Don't forget Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day - they're closed those days too in Washington state

•You're right, thanks for the correction. Washington state observes more holidays than just the federal ones.

I always forget about holidays and end up calling anyway lol. At least the automated message tells you they're closed

•Same here! I called on Veterans Day thinking it was just a federal thing

Pro tip: if you need to reach Washington ESD urgently on a holiday, you can sometimes use the callback feature on their website. It won't work today since they're closed, but it's useful for busy regular business days.

•Wait, Washington ESD has a callback feature? Where do I find that?

•When you log into your account, look for the 'Contact Us' section. There should be an option to request a callback, though it can take several days.

Why do they even close for MLK Day? Seems like unemployment should be available when people need it most

•It's a state holiday, they have to follow the same schedule as other state agencies

•I guess that makes sense but still frustrating when you need help

I learned this the hard way last year. Called bright and early on MLK Day thinking I'd beat the rush, got the holiday message. At least filing weekly claims online works fine.

•That's exactly what I was planning to do! Good thing I asked first

claimyr saved me so much time when I couldn't get through to washington esd after my disqualification. definitely worth checking out if you're having phone issues

•That's the second recommendation for that service. Might be worth trying if I can't get through tomorrow.

•yeah it's super easy to use, just connects you when an agent is available instead of waiting on hold forever

I hate when holidays fall on Mondays because then Tuesday is always crazy busy with everyone trying to call at once

•Tuesday after any 3-day weekend is the worst for getting through to Washington ESD

•Exactly! I always try to call later in the week if I can wait

Does the job search requirement still apply during holidays? Like do I need to log activities for today even though offices are closed?

Raj Gupta
•You still need to meet your weekly job search requirements regardless of holidays. The requirement is based on your benefit week, not business days. You can do online applications, networking, etc.

•Got it, thanks. I'll make sure to log some online applications today then.

at least we can still certify online. remember when everything was paper and you had to mail stuff in? that was terrible

•omg yes! I'm old enough to remember those days. The online system is so much better even with its problems

•right? sure it crashes sometimes but at least you don't have to worry about mail delays

For anyone dealing with adjudication issues like OP mentioned - those can take weeks even when Washington ESD is open every day. Don't panic if it takes a while, but definitely follow up if it's been more than 3-4 weeks.

Carlos Mendoza
•Mine's been in adjudication for about 2 weeks now. Should I be worried?
0 coins
Leila Haddad
•Two weeks is still normal range. If you hit 4 weeks with no updates, that's when I'd start making daily calls to check status.

Emma Johnson
•That's when claimyr really helps - you can get through to ask about adjudication status without spending hours on hold

just a heads up that if you're on standby status, holidays can affect your return-to-work date reporting. make sure you update that if your employer's schedule changes due to the holiday

•Good point! I forgot about that last Presidents Day and had to explain the date change later

The Washington ESD website should really have a clearer holiday schedule posted. I always have to hunt around to find that information

Quick reminder that even though phones are closed today, if you have a scheduled phone interview with Washington ESD, those are usually rescheduled automatically for the next business day. Check your notices to confirm.

I tried using that claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier and it actually worked great. Got connected to a Washington ESD agent in like 20 minutes instead of the usual 2+ hour wait times. Pretty convenient.

•Ok that's three people now recommending it. I'm definitely going to try that if I can't get through tomorrow.

•Yeah it's worth it especially for urgent stuff like adjudication questions. The video demo they have explains it pretty well.
