How to file for unemployment after being fired - Washington ESD process?
I got terminated from my job last Friday and I'm really confused about how to file for unemployment benefits in Washington. I've never done this before and I'm not sure if I'm even eligible since I was fired (not laid off). My employer said it was due to performance issues but I feel like that's not accurate. Can anyone walk me through the Washington ESD filing process? Do I need to wait a certain amount of time before applying? I'm really stressed about this whole situation.

You can file immediately - don't wait! Go to esd.wa.gov and start your application right away. Being fired doesn't automatically disqualify you from unemployment benefits in Washington. The key is whether you were terminated for misconduct or not. Performance issues usually aren't considered misconduct unless they involve willful violations of company policy.

•Thank you! I was worried I had to wait. Should I file online or over the phone?

•Definitely online at esd.wa.gov - it's much faster than trying to call. The phone lines are always swamped.

Make sure you have all your employment info ready when you file - dates of employment, employer contact info, reason for separation, etc. Washington ESD will ask for all of this during the application process.

•Good point - I should gather all that info first. Do I need pay stubs or anything like that?

•Not usually for the initial filing, but keep them handy in case Washington ESD needs them later for verification.

I went through this exact same thing last year. Filed immediately after being fired and it took about 3 weeks to get my first payment. The hardest part was actually getting through to Washington ESD when I had questions. I ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual person at Washington ESD. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Three weeks seems like forever when you're not getting paid! Did you have any issues with your claim?

•Mine went into adjudication because my employer contested it, but it eventually got approved. That's when I really needed to talk to someone at Washington ESD and Claimyr was a lifesaver.

IMPORTANT: Be 100% honest about why you were fired when you fill out the application. Washington ESD will contact your employer anyway, so if your stories don't match it could cause problems. Even if you disagree with their reason, just state what they told you.

•That's good advice. I'll just put exactly what they said even though I think it's unfair.

•This is so important! I made the mistake of trying to 'correct' my employer's version and it delayed my claim for weeks.

•That's not encouraging :/ How long did it take you to get approved?

Don't let the negative comments scare you! Many claims go through without any issues. The key things to remember: file immediately, be honest about separation reason, and start looking for work right away since you'll need to meet job search requirements.

•What are the job search requirements? Do I need to apply to a certain number of jobs each week?
0 coins
QuantumQueen
•Yes, you need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. You can do this through WorkSourceWA.com or track it yourself.

I'm in the same boat - got fired last month and still waiting for my first payment. My claim has been in adjudication for 3 weeks now. The waiting is killing me financially.

•Have you been able to talk to anyone at Washington ESD about the delay?

CyberSamurai
•No, I've called like 50 times and either get busy signal or get hung up on after waiting an hour.

For anyone having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I had success with Claimyr recently. It's a service that helps you get through to actual agents. Saved me hours of calling and redialing.

•Is that legit? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

•Yeah it's real - check out their website claimyr.com. They have a demo video that explains how it works.

Quick update - I filed my claim online and it was actually pretty straightforward. Now I'm just waiting to hear back from Washington ESD. Fingers crossed it doesn't take too long!

•Great job getting it filed! Make sure to file your weekly claims even while waiting for the initial determination.

Just wanted to add that if your employer does contest your claim, don't panic. You'll get a chance to tell your side of the story. I got fired for 'attitude problems' but still got approved because it wasn't willful misconduct.

Mateo Martinez
•That's reassuring to hear! Did you have to do a phone interview or anything?

Zoe Alexopoulos
•Yes, they did a fact-finding interview over the phone. It was nerve-wracking but just be honest and stick to the facts.

Been through this multiple times unfortunately. The most important thing is to file immediately and then be patient. Washington ESD moves slowly but they'll get to your claim eventually.

•Multiple times? That sucks, but thanks for the advice.

•Yeah, welcome to the modern job market! At least I know the process now.

Pro tip: screenshot everything when you file online. Save confirmation numbers, print out your application, keep records of everything. If there are any issues later you'll need proof of what you submitted.

•Good thinking - I'll make sure to save everything.

•This is excellent advice! I learned this the hard way when Washington ESD claimed they never received my job search log.

Does anyone know if there's a waiting period before benefits start? I heard something about a waiting week but I'm not sure if that's still a thing.

QuantumQueen
•Washington eliminated the waiting week a few years ago, so benefits should start immediately once you're approved.

•Oh that's good news! Thanks for clarifying.

I got fired for being late too many times and still got unemployment. As long as it's not gross misconduct like stealing or violence, you'll probably be okay. Performance issues rarely disqualify you.

•Same here - got fired for 'not meeting expectations' and had no issues getting benefits.

Make sure to apply for jobs RIGHT AWAY even before your claim is approved. You need to show you're actively looking for work from day one. Keep detailed records of every application.

•Already started applying! Should I use WorkSourceWA or just keep my own records?

Fatima Al-Farsi
•Either works, but WorkSourceWA makes it easier to track everything in one place.

The Washington ESD website can be confusing but stick with it. If you get stuck on any part of the application, there are help links throughout the process.

•I found it pretty user-friendly actually, but good to know about the help links.

•The mobile version is terrible though - definitely use a computer if you can.

One more thing - if you worked in multiple states recently, make sure you file in the right state. Washington ESD can only pay benefits on wages earned in Washington.

Mateo Martinez
•Good point - I've only worked in Washington so I should be good.

ElectricDreamer
•If you did work in multiple states, you might need to file a combined wage claim. It's more complicated but can result in higher benefits.

Getting fired sucks but at least you can collect unemployment while you look for something better. Just remember to file your weekly claims every week even if you haven't heard anything yet.

Mateo Martinez
•Thanks for the encouragement! I'll make sure to stay on top of the weekly claims.

•Yeah, missing a weekly claim can really mess up your benefits even if it's not your fault.

I had to use Claimyr too when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Worth every penny to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD instead of calling 100 times a day.

•Seems like a lot of people have had good luck with that service.

•I was skeptical at first but it really works. Got through to Washington ESD in like 10 minutes instead of spending all day calling.

Don't stress too much about it. Most people who get fired for performance reasons have no problem getting unemployment benefits. The system is designed to help people who lose their jobs through no fault of their own.
