Just got fired can I get Washington ESD unemployment benefits?
So I just got terminated from my job yesterday and I'm freaking out about money. Can I file for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD? I worked there for about 2 years and they said it was due to 'performance issues' but honestly I think my supervisor just didn't like me. I've never filed for unemployment before so I have no idea what I'm doing. Do I qualify if I got fired instead of laid off? How long does it take to get approved? I really need help figuring this out.

Yes, you can potentially get unemployment even if you were fired, but it depends on the reason. If you were fired for 'misconduct' then you'd be disqualified, but performance issues usually don't count as misconduct unless it was willful. You should definitely apply through the Washington ESD website as soon as possible since there's a waiting period.

•What exactly counts as misconduct? I was never written up for anything serious, just some meetings about productivity.

•Misconduct usually means things like theft, violence, or deliberately violating company policy. Poor performance or not meeting expectations typically doesn't qualify as misconduct in Washington's eyes.

File immediately! Don't wait. Even if there's a question about your eligibility, it's better to get the process started. The first week is always unpaid anyway (waiting week) so you want to get that out of the way.

•How do I file? Is it all online or do I need to call someone?

•Go to esd.wa.gov and click on 'Apply for Benefits.' It's all online now. You'll need your Social Security number, employment history for the last 18 months, and your employer's info.

I was in a similar situation last year. Got fired for 'not being a good fit' and was worried I wouldn't qualify. Turns out Washington ESD approved me because it wasn't misconduct. The key is how you answer the questions about why you were terminated. Be honest but don't make it sound like you did something wrong on purpose.

•How long did it take for you to get approved? I'm really stressed about paying rent next month.

•It took about 3 weeks for me, but that was before they streamlined things. Now it's usually faster unless your claim goes into adjudication.

Just a heads up - your employer might contest your claim. When I got fired they tried to say it was misconduct even though it wasn't. I had to deal with Washington ESD for weeks trying to get through to explain my side. The phone system is absolutely terrible, I spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. If you need to talk to someone at ESD about your claim, I recently found this service called Claimyr that actually gets you through to agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

•Wait, what's Claimyr? Is it legit or one of those scammy things?

Felix Grigori
•It's legit - they just help you get through the phone system to reach an actual ESD agent. I was skeptical too but it worked when I needed to talk to someone about my contested claim.

•I've heard of that service too. My friend used it when she had adjudication issues. Better than wasting hours trying to call yourself.

Don't let horror stories scare you. Most claims go through fine. The important thing is to file your weekly claims every week even while you're waiting for approval, and start your job search right away since you'll need to show you're actively looking for work.

•How many jobs do I need to apply to each week?

Ella Cofer
•You need to make at least 3 job search activities per week in Washington. That can be applications, networking, interviews, job fairs, etc. Keep detailed records in case they audit you.

File online asap. I got fired for attendance issues (chronic illness) and still got approved after explaining the situation. Washington is pretty reasonable about these things compared to other states.

•That's reassuring. I was worried being fired automatically disqualified me.

•Nope, only if it's misconduct. Performance, attendance, not being a good fit - those usually don't disqualify you.

Also make sure you have all your pay stubs and employment info ready. The application asks for a lot of details about your work history. It's better to have everything organized before you start.

•I think I have most of my pay stubs. Do I need anything else from my employer?

Kevin Bell
•Just their basic info - company name, address, phone number, dates you worked there. ESD will contact them directly about the details.

One thing to watch out for - if your employer contests your claim and says it was misconduct, your claim might go into adjudication which takes longer. I had this happen and it was a pain trying to reach someone at ESD to explain my side of the story.

•How would I know if they contest it?

•You'll get a notice in your online account or by mail. If that happens, you might want to use something like that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier to actually talk to an ESD agent.

The most important thing is to file immediately and then file your weekly claims every week. Even if you're not approved yet, you need to keep filing to maintain your claim. Missing a week can mess up your whole claim.

•When do I file the weekly claims? Is there a specific day?

Savannah Glover
•You can file starting Sunday for the previous week. I usually do mine Sunday morning so I don't forget. Set a reminder on your phone.

just want to say hang in there. getting fired sucks but unemployment will help bridge the gap while you find something new. dont let the process intimidate you

One more tip - when you're filling out the application, there's a section about why you're no longer working. Be factual but don't volunteer information that makes you look bad. Stick to what your employer told you and don't elaborate unless asked.

•So I should just say 'terminated for performance issues' and leave it at that?
0 coins
Ella Cofer
•Exactly. Let them ask for more details if they need them. The less you say, the less chance of saying something that could hurt your claim.

I got fired from my last job too and got unemployment no problem. The whole process was actually pretty straightforward once I got started. Don't overthink it.

•How much do you get per week? Is it enough to live on?

•It's based on your previous wages. For me it was about 60% of what I was making. Not great but better than nothing while job hunting.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements from day one. You need to be actively looking for work and keep records. Don't wait until later to start applying for jobs.

•Can I be picky about what jobs I apply for or do I have to take anything?
0 coins
Lilly Curtis
•At first you can look for jobs similar to what you had. After a while (usually 5-7 weeks) you might need to expand your search to other types of work.

The Washington ESD website can be confusing at first but it's actually pretty user-friendly once you get used to it. Take your time filling out the application and double-check everything before submitting.

•Is there a way to save it and come back later if I don't have all the info I need?

Leo Simmons
•I think you can save your progress but I'm not 100% sure. Better to gather everything first - it probably takes 30-45 minutes to complete.

Just remembered - if you do end up needing to talk to ESD about your claim (like if your employer contests it), definitely consider using Claimyr. I wasted so many hours trying to get through on my own. Their service actually works and gets you connected to a real person.

•I used Claimyr too when I had questions about my adjudication. Much better than the regular phone system which is basically useless.

Don't stress too much about this. Lots of people get unemployment after being fired. Just file the claim and see what happens. Worst case they deny you and you can appeal.
0 coins
Taylor To
•How does the appeal process work if they deny me?
0 coins
Saleem Vaziri
•You get a notice with instructions on how to appeal. You usually have 30 days to file it. Then there's a hearing where you can explain your side.
