How long after you are fired can you collect unemployment in Washington state?
Got terminated from my job last Thursday for what they called 'performance issues' but I think it was more about them cutting costs. I'm wondering how soon I can apply for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD? Is there a waiting period after being fired, or can I file right away? Also worried they might contest it since they fired me instead of laying me off. Anyone know the rules on this?

You can file immediately after being terminated. There's no waiting period to submit your initial claim with Washington ESD. The sooner you file, the sooner your benefit year starts. Even if they contest it, you should still file right away because the adjudication process can take weeks.

Just wanted to add that when you file your claim, make sure to be completely honest about the circumstances of your termination. Washington ESD will investigate anyway, and being upfront about the "performance issues" will work in your favor during adjudication. Also, keep all your termination paperwork - any write-ups, performance reviews, or termination letter. These documents can help prove it wasn't willful misconduct if your employer tries to contest the claim.
