How many hours do you need to work to get unemployment in Washington?

I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment benefits in Washington state. I've been working part-time for the past 8 months at about 25 hours per week, but my hours got cut to almost nothing last month. Do I have enough work history to qualify for Washington ESD benefits? I'm confused about the hour requirements and base period stuff. Anyone know what the minimum is?

It's not actually about total hours worked - Washington ESD looks at your wages during your base period, which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you file. You need to have earned at least $3,850 in your base period and made at least $1,265 in your highest earning quarter.

Oh that makes more sense! So it's wage-based not hour-based. I was making $18/hour so I think I might qualify then.

Yeah the wage requirements change every year too. Make sure you're looking at current 2025 numbers when you calculate.

I had the same confusion when I filed last year! The base period thing is confusing but once you understand it, it makes sense. You also have to be able and available for work and actively looking for jobs.

What does 'able and available' actually mean? I can work but I have some scheduling restrictions because of my kids.

As long as you're available for a reasonable amount of work during normal business hours, you should be fine. They're pretty understanding about childcare issues.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD to get your questions answered, I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Super helpful when the phone lines are always busy.

How does that work exactly? Do they just call for you or something?

They basically handle the calling and waiting part, then connect you when they get an agent on the line. Saved me hours of trying to get through myself.

The wage requirement is definitely the key thing. But also remember you have to have lost your job through no fault of your own. If you quit or got fired for misconduct, you won't qualify regardless of your wages.

My hours just got reduced dramatically, I didn't quit or get fired. Does that count as losing my job?

•

Reduction in hours can qualify you for partial unemployment benefits. You'd need to file and they'll determine your weekly benefit amount based on the hours you're still working.

I'm in a similar situation - went from 40 hours to 15 hours per week. Still working on getting my partial claim sorted out.

Just remember you'll need to file weekly claims and do job search activities. Washington requires 3 job search contacts per week unless you're on standby status with your employer.

What's standby status? My employer said they might bring me back to full hours eventually.

Diego Ramirez

•

Standby means your employer expects to recall you within a specific timeframe. If you qualify for standby, you don't have to do the job search requirement.

ugh the whole system is so confusing! I've been trying to figure this out for weeks and keep getting different answers from different people

The Washington ESD website has a benefits calculator that can help you estimate if you qualify and what your weekly benefit might be. That might give you a clearer picture.

Been there! When I first lost my job I had no idea about any of these requirements. The base period calculation is probably the most important thing to understand.

Did you have trouble getting approved? I'm worried they'll find some reason to deny me.

As long as you meet the wage requirements and lost work through no fault of your own, you should be fine. The process takes time but it's pretty straightforward.

I used Claimyr too when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Really helped me get answers about what was happening with my case. Worth it when you can't get through the regular phone lines.

How long was your claim in adjudication? Mine's been pending for 2 weeks now.

0 coins

Mine was about 3 weeks. Once I got through to an agent they were able to explain what documents they needed to finish processing it.

For partial unemployment like your situation, you can usually work up to a certain amount each week and still get some benefits. They calculate it based on your weekly benefit amount minus what you earn.

Chloe Taylor

•

That's good to know! So I might be able to keep working my reduced hours and still get some help.

0 coins

Yuki Tanaka

•

Exactly. You just have to report your earnings when you file your weekly claims. They'll adjust your benefit amount accordingly.

Don't forget you might be eligible for the additional federal programs too depending on your situation. Make sure to ask about all available benefits when you apply.

What federal programs? I thought most of the pandemic stuff ended.

Carmen Ortiz

Most of the pandemic programs did end, but there might still be some training or work programs available. Best to ask Washington ESD directly about what's current.

I was in almost the exact same situation last year - part time job, hours got cut way back. Took about 2 weeks to get my first payment after I filed but I did qualify for partial benefits.

Chloe Taylor

•

That's encouraging! Did you have any issues with the application process?

0 coins

Andre Laurent

•

Not really, just had to provide some employment verification. The hardest part was actually getting through to ask questions when I got confused about something.

0 coins

Make sure you apply as soon as possible if you think you qualify. Benefits don't backdate to when you lost hours, only to when you actually file the claim.

Chloe Taylor

•

Good point! I'll start the application today then. Better to find out sooner rather than later.

0 coins

Yeah definitely don't wait. Even if there are issues with your claim, at least you'll have the filing date established.

The Washington ESD customer service is terrible though. Expect to wait on hold for hours if you need to call them about anything.

That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. Takes all the frustration out of trying to reach them.

I've had better luck calling right when they open at 8am or during lunch hours around noon. Still takes forever though.

Just went through this whole process myself. The wage calculator on their website is pretty accurate. Put in your quarterly earnings and it'll tell you if you qualify and estimate your weekly benefit amount.

Chloe Taylor

•

Perfect, I'll check that out. Thanks for all the help everyone!

No problem! The whole system seems overwhelming at first but once you get started it's not too bad.

One more thing - keep good records of everything. All your pay stubs, any communication with your employer about the hour reduction, etc. You might need it if they have questions about your claim.

0 coins

Chloe Taylor

•

Good reminder. I have most of my recent pay stubs but I should probably gather everything together before I apply.

0 coins

Yeah definitely. I had to provide employment verification for my last few jobs when I applied. Having everything organized made it much easier.
